The mystery of Nebraska Football

The most confounding thing about Nebraska football over the past 10 years is how we can't seem to find a QB who could even start for a full season on another P5 team. I know AM did, but he again got hurt quickly. But how have we found ourselves in a situation where literally every opponent's QB this season and last are better than ours? Is our system and location toxic to QBs?

Sell out streak and stadium size

I know that the sell out streak is a precious tradition around here even if it is a bit fake. And as we renovate the stadium we will be reducing the seating capacity in order to make seating more comfortable. So we are talking a stadium holding around 75,000 and that will help keep the sell out streak going.

However, my thinking is just the opposite. I have attended some games at Penn State when that place was full and there were 110,000 screaming fans in attendance. Of course, having a stadium that big means that PSU has a lot of games that are not sell outs. But guess what? They don't give a shit. Because they like the fact that when a Michigan or an OSU or a Nebraska comes a calling that they can pack it in with 110,000 and really make an intimidating atmosphere. And it is very intimidating. And it screams out "this is big boy, big time football."

I think we should do the same. I understand that there are probably space limitations for doing that at Memorial Stadium, especially if we are going to real seats with seat backs and so on. But I think we should try to at least maintain the current seating capacity and to even look at raising it to around 95.000 or so. The sell out streak be damned. I am not an engineer and do not even play one on TV, but I bet there is a way to do this. I know this will not be a popular view, but I hate seeing our stadium drifting back into the 70,000-75,000 range.

Just my worthless two cents

Rhule 10/2 Press Conference

Appreciated Rhule's press conference today. Said it how it is and is ticked off how the team played Saturday.

I've enjoyed his straight forward answers to most questions throughout the year and for the most part not sugarcoating anything. Hope that continues in the years to come, but I feel like our media will wear on anyone no matter how good or bad we are.

Some questions like, "How did the QBs look today," are just painful. What do you expect him to say? The guy isn't going to crap on a player and he wants to keep the other team preparing for both QB's style.

Basketball WBB: Jaz Shelley, Alexis Markowski named to Preseason All-Big Ten teams

From Nebraska athletic communications:

Jaz Shelley and Alexis Markowski earned Preseason All-Big Ten recognition from both coaches and media when the conference announced its honors on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

Nebraska joined Ohio State (Cotie McMahon, Jacy Sheldon) as the only school in the conference to place two players on the Preseason All-Big Ten teams.

Shelley, a first-team All-Big Ten selection at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, was a member of both the Naismith Trophy and Ann Meyers Drysdale Award watch lists a year ago. The 5-9 guard from Moe, Australia (pronounced MO-ee) averaged 14.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and a team-leading 6.2 assists while also ranking among Big Ten leaders with 79 three-pointers on the season.

Nebraska's 2023 MVP, Shelley was a second-team All-Big Ten choice in her first season with the Huskers in 2021-22. She was also a member of the media's Big Ten All-Defensive Team, helping Nebraska to a 2022 NCAA Tournament berth. She was the only Big Ten player to rank among the top 20 in all five major statistical categories - scoring (13.1 ppg), rebounding (6.3 rpg), assists (5.0 apg), steals (1.8 spg) and blocked shots (0.9 bpg) in 2021-22.

In two seasons as a Husker, Shelley has totaled 896 points, 361 rebounds, 366 assists, 113 steals and 52 blocks over 65 games. She has been a member of the Australian National Team since 2020 and was the only collegian on Australia's 2021 team at the FIBA Asia Cup.

A graduate student who earned her bachelor's degree in advertising and public relations in May of 2023, Shelley was a College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection in 2023. The Academic All-Big Ten choice has attended the NBA Student-Athlete Summit each of the past two summers.

Markowski claimed Preseason All-Big Ten honors for the second consecutive season. The two-time second-team All-Big Ten choice averaged 11.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game as a sophomore for the Huskers in 2022-23. The 6-3 center led the Big Ten with 322 total rebounds and was the only conference player to average a double-double (12.4 ppg, 10.2 rpg) during regular-season Big Ten action a year ago. She also led all league post players with 15 double-doubles.

A Naismith Trophy candidate in 2022-23, Markowski was the only non-senior/graduate student to advance to the Lisa Leslie Award Midseason Top 10. The 2022 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Markowski averaged 12.8 points and 8.0 rebounds while becoming a starter during the conference season. She helped the Huskers to three wins over AP Top 10 teams and a trip to the Big Ten semifinals before advancing to the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

The junior out of Lincoln Pius X High School has totaled 803 points and 587 rebounds through 66 games in her Husker career. She also participated in the USA AmeriCup Team Trials in May of 2023. She was an Academic All-Big Ten selection as a sophomore.

Markowski, Shelley, Maddie Krull and Head Coach Amy Williams will participate at Big Ten Women's Basketball Media Day at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Monday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

People Need to Relax

I am the biggest HH hater on the board but what did people expect Saturday? Take it a step further, what did people truly expect coming into the season? We have arguably no NFL players on this roster. That was abundantly clear. Nobody on this roster has won more than 4 games or been to a bowl game. This is going to take 3-4-5 years and we knew that coming in. To judge this team or Rhule off of Saturday shows complete incompetence by husker nation and this board. We are going to be fine. He will get this thing back to 7-9 wins and a brand of football we will like. It will just be a very long year.

Buckle up because Friday night may not look a whole lot better offensively. Illinois has a very disruptive dline with a few really good players on backend which will likely stifle our offense. Last weekend against Purdue, they just wore down in run game. Don't let the score fool you. Illinois will be ready to prove it defensively Friday night at home and unfortunately we don't have the horses to answer.

Recruiting Nebraska building relationship with 5-star OT Jackson Cantwell after visit, in the mix with 4-star OT Andrew Babalola

One of the more intriguing players that Nebraska hosted for the Michigan game was 2026 five-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell.

The Missouri native was glad he got to come to Lincoln and see what coach Matt Rhule is building in Lincoln.

“It was a pretty fun visit,” Cantwell said. “Even though the score didn’t go the way they wanted, I got to keep building my relationship with all of the coaches and see what they’re building there.”

I spotted Cantwell spending a lot of time with staffer Keith Williams and fellow offensive line recruit Andrew Babaloa. The 2026 prospect also watched offensive line coach Donovan Raiola closely and says his relationship is building with him.

“It was good seeing them again,” Cantwell said. “I really like talking ball with Coach Raiola and his assistants, and talking to Coach Rhule was pretty good as well.”

Being a top 10 player in the nation for his class, Cantwell has a ton of options on the table. He’s got over 20 scholarship offers right now including Alabama, Georgia and Florida State. He doesn’t think he’ll make it back to Lincoln this year because he’s got a lot more places to see in person. Alabama and Georgia are on the list for this season.

But Cantwell wants to make it back to Lincoln next season. This will be an interesting recruitment to follow. Cantwell’s mom is from Crete, Nebraska, so he’s got lots of family ties to the Huskers. Both his parents are former Olympians.

LAST MEETING
October 29, 2022

Illinois 26, Nebraska 9

LINCOLN -
Nebraska rallied to take a 9-6 lead in the second quarter, but No. 17 Illinois responded with 20 unanswered points to grab a 26-9 victory over the Cornhuskers on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

The Huskers had a three-point lead and the ball with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half when Casey Thompson was hit as he threw, resulting in an interception. Illinois returned the interception to the Nebraska 11-yard line and scored two plays later to take the lead for good. Thompson would not return for the Huskers, who managed just 34 yards of offense without their starting quarterback over the final 36 minutes against the No. 1 defense in the country.

After an opening-drive touchdown by Illinois, the Huskers responded late in the first quarter. Alante Brown's 15-yard reception and a career-long 45-yard catch for Chancellor Brewington put Nebraska in scoring position and Timmy Bleekrode hit a 26-yard field goal to put Nebraska on the board with 1:49 left in the first quarter.

Nebraska carried that momentum into the second quarter with Quinton Newsome's second tackle for loss of the game, driving Illinois out of field goal range on the Illini's next possession. That set the stage for Nebraska to take a lead. Brown had a 32-yard catch on the second play of the Huskers' ensuing drive and three plays later, Thompson capped the drive off with 56-yard touchdown strike to Travis Vokolek, who sprinted down the sideline into the end zone.

The reception marked the longest of Vokolek's four-year career and gave Nebraska a 9-6 lead with 9:38 remaining in the first half.

NU's defense continued to hold strong as Isaac Gifford tallied his first career sack with 7:50 left in the half. Illinois' defense responded with the interception of Thompson and subsequent touchdown. Leading 13-9, Illinois added another touchdown with 23 seconds left in the first half on a 12-yard touchdown reception by Chase Brown.

Trailing 20-9, Nebraska drove into Illinois territory on the first drive of the second half but the drive stalled. After a Brian Buschini punt pinned the Illini at their own 9-yard line, Newsome came up with a big play for the Husker defense, recovering an Isaiah Williams' fumble inside Illinois territory with 11:51 left in the third quarter.

With a chance to make it a one score drive, Chubba Purdy, who played the entire second half after Thompson's injury, was picked off on the subsequent drive to give the ball back to the Fighting Illini.

With the football and the lead, Illinois went 70 yards on 13 plays ending with a 36-yard field goal to extend the lead to 14. Nebraska's fourth turnover of the game set Illinois up with a short field, but the Husker defense did not allow a first down as Illinois settled for a 41-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.

That proved to be the final points of the game, as the Huskers held the Illini to only six points in the second half. Nebraska limited Illinois to only 132 yards in the second half and came up big as three of Illinois' second-half drives started at midfield or in Nebraska territory.

Luke Reimer led the attack on defense with nine total tackles, followed by Marques Buford Jr. and Myles Farmer who both finished with seven.

The Husker offense tallied 219 yards in the first half but were held to just 29 yards of offense in the second half. Anthony Grant carried the ball 12 times for 61 yards in the game while Casey Thompson led Nebraska before his injury with 172 passing yards and a touchdown.

Apathy

I get the irony that Im posting on a husker board, but wanted to get others thoughts.

My fears the past few years have been that apathy would set in. I think it has for me. I knew I was teetering but would still get excited for gameday. Im not anymore. Minnesota game I didnt care we lost, knew we would. N Ill didnt really care, was happy to see the new qb. Didnt have any desire to watch La tech, but chalked that up to our opponent. Thought maybe Id get fired up for michigan.
I watched maybe ten plays yesterday. I knew we’d lose. Its to the point where I realize we dont have a chance.

I am not bashing the rhule hire. I think we could get back to respectability with him. Wish hed started five years ago. However there have been some head scratchers thus far, and I think we all kmow rhule has a ceiling and isnt getting us back to national prominence. I think there were better options but that's water under the bridge. Im just tired of all the reasons we cant make bowl games while historically bad teams all around us are, even with first year coaches.

Another year without a bowl game looks all but certain, and while it isnt rhules fault that we’ve been bad for so long, Ive reached apathy.

Id still like to go to a game this year and I have close family going to Lincoln to play so Ill get fired up again and maybe this is just a short phase but its an alarming feeling. Maybe I need a speech from bluto.

Anyone else thinking this?

Football No time for rest; Huskers practice full-go on Sunday after Michigan loss

“No, never in my life,” Husker center Ben Scott said Tuesday when asked if he’s ever practiced full-go in pads the day after a game. “Didn't feel good, but you gotta do what you gotta do."

Sounds like the coaches are set on trying to make sure what happened last Saturday never happens again.

Football Five Tuesday Takeaways: MJ Sherman is Batman ... and also the starting Jack now

Five Tuesday Takeaways:

>> MJ Sherman is Batman ... and officially the starting Jack
>> Cam Lenhardt working his way back
>> Haarberg's first road start?
>> OL making slight tweaks
>> Two-Way Tommi was primarily a DB vs Michigan & will likely be the same vs Illinois after near 50-50 split vs La Tech

Volleyball Game Thread FINAL: No. 2 Nebraska 3, Indiana 1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-19)

Nebraska is right back on the road to finish out this weekend's road trip in Indiana. The Huskers now face an Indiana Hoosier squad that may be the most improved team in the Big Ten. IU posted a 10-3 record in non-conference play which is the best in school history. Setter Camryn Haworth is one of the best setters in the nation and leads a Hoosier serving attack that ranks ninth in aces per set. In fact, Haworth leads the country with 36 aces while IU has four players who have recorded 10 or more aces.

Tonight's match is set for 6 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.

Here's a more in-depth preview of Indiana:

The Huskers barely escaped a Friday night bout with No. 17 Purdue in West Lafayette. The Boilermaker duo of Eva Hudson and Chloe Chicoine gave the Nebraska D fits for much of the night, but it was the freshman phenom Harper Murray who came in clutch for NU as she hammered four kills in the last four Husker points to deliver Nebraska five-set win. Here's that recap from last night:

Assistant coach Jordan Larson isn't with the team this weekend, but she made her return to Lincoln after helping the U.S. National Team qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics Games. Here's my feature on The Governor.

Finally, the WWL from head coach John Cook:

Can we finally now stop the nonsense?

Many have said, including myself, that we have talent on this team based on our recruiting rankings but that it has been poorly coached.

We do not have talent on this team. Recruiting rankings be damned. There is only one way to get Nebraska football back. We need to bring in better players. Period.

Rhule will succeed or fail based on that metric. So let’s stop talking nonsense about how we have talent on this team because we don’t. And that is true of every damn position.
