Did Dr. Tom Osborne replace Scott Frost when he fumbled the ball 30 times vs. ASU?

I remember being in the stands when they booed Frost at home and were calling for Frankie London to come in. Nebraska fans have had a long history of calling for the backup QB and it usually is not a good idea. Was it Curt Dukes for Jammal Lord?

The only time it seemingly had some merit was when Joe Ganz came in and lit up the scoreboards against weak Big XII defenses. But the guy he replaced had actually performed at a high level prior to coming to NU.

It's time to let Sims redeem himself against some cupcakes and maybe give HH a few QB runs and easy throws.

We didn't give up on Scott Frost when he scored 0 points against a team we put up 77 on the year before. He fumbled and bumbled and safetied the game away in the desert that night, but the coach didn't give up on him. He also had Ahman Green to hand the ball off to along with the pipeline blocking up front. Jeff Sims does not have that luxury. He has the Scott Frost coaching special pass protecting him and we need to cut him some slack.

We also need to keep in mind how hard the media is pushing this Deion Sanders "male Kardashians" narrative. There's a high probability some handlers came to Sims and dropped some cash off in a Louis Vutton bag telling him to "do what's best for the business."

Volleyball Game Thread FINAL: No. 4 Nebraska 3, No. 5 Stanford 1 (25-23, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21)

It's the biggest game of the season for the Nebraska Volleyball team as the No. 4 Huskers are in California to take on No. 5 Stanford Tuesday at Maples Pavilion. This will be the ultimate challenge for Nebraska who will try to cement itself as a true national title contender with a victory.

The Huskers currently have a five-game losing streak to the Cardinal that dates back 15 years. Nebraska and head coach John Cook have yet to beat Kevin Hambly. The Huskers last win over Stanford came in 2008. In between that time the Cardinal has won five-straight including the national title match in 2018.

I got a couple pieces of content to get you set for tonight's primetime battle on ESPN. My feature on how this game will give Nebraska a chance to come out as a national title contender:

3 Point Stance Take on Huskers

This is extremely well said. GBR

Nebraska needs to have patience with Matt Rhule.

Matt Rhule

Matt Rhule (AP Images)
"This is what you get when you hire me. It's not going to be a quick fix, it's not gonna be overnight," Matt Rhule said in his press conference following an 0-2 start. Having spent time on Nebraska's staff I know firsthand that Husker fans likely cringed and may have even felt insulted by those comments.
Nebraska, with one of college football's most passionate fanbases, has continued a record sellout streak despite the program's struggles for the better part of a decade. And Nebraska fans feel they deserve more.
But, the reality of the situation is that the glory days of Nebraska football occurred before today's top recruits were alive and without a plethora of elite talent in its back yard, this is a total rebuild and it is going to take time.
I'm not sure the Huskers' new head coach knew what he was walking into when he became the state's most scrutinized figure and was heralded by some as an instant fix to everything that has gone wrong with the Nebraska in recent years. But I truly believe he is the man for the job.
For Nebraska to come close to replicating its past success of the Tom Osborne years, it is going to take a partnership among fans, coaches and players. Nebraska is unique in the sense that the influence of the fans has an actual effect on the product that is put on the field. Nebraska tried to win with a coach who had taken an NFL team to the Super Bowl and failed. It tried to win with a coach who had won with less fertile recruiting ground and failed. It tried to win with a legendary former player who experienced coaching success elsewhere and failed. Now it is trying to win with a coach who has proven to take teams from the depths of college football and made them winners again.
Rhule can and will win, if given time. But this is a group effort that extends far outside the coaches' offices, and patience plus support is the key to success if Nebraska wants to compete for championships again.

Jeff Simms

After watching this last week of practice don’t be surprised if he is in Heisman contention by the end. He has been carving the defense up in practice and we haven’t seen throws this accurate since Ganz. JS doesn’t need a lot of protection because he is better outside the pocket on scramble throws. He lays the wood too. I overheard Rhule tell coach Sat that if JS stays healthy they got 10 wins. That should get him to New York.

Comforting Thought

At this point in time we have a football coach and basketball coach both with the worst winning percentages in our respective program's history. I realize that isn't a fair assessment in Rhule's case but it stands true irregardless. Hoiberg has, by far, the worst record in our proud history. In fact, no one is even close.
Rebuilding my mustard plaster, he's just been plain awful.
Point is, you can't depend on the rebuilding excuse for eternity. You can't blame the previous coach forever. I even saw some Riley blaming today.
At some point you stop and demand excellence from the AD on down.

Re-thinking the "bench Sims" mantra

I am on record saying that Rhule should bench Sims and should have done so at halftime against CU. And I still think he should have at least been forced to sit out a series to clear his head after his second fumble.

However, in thinking this through the following occurred to me. What if Sims really is our best QB on the roster? What if, minus the turnovers, he gives us the best chance of winning? This would explain why Rhule has stuck with him through all of this. Yes, Sims has now cost us two games with his turnovers. But in the first game his problem was interceptions. But he only through one against CU. In the second game his main issue was fumbles, but he had none against Minnesota. Perhaps Rhule is confident that Sims will improve and that going forward he will not fumble snaps and he will be given throwing packages that minimize interceptions.

I know, I know, Sims has been a turnover machine his entire career. So why expect that to end now? Still, I have never believed that either Haarberg or Purdy are worth a shit as QB's. And even if they do not commit as many turnovers I sure as heck do not see them moving the football and scoring with any consistency. So our best option is to go with our best athlete at QB since we have so very few playmakers on offense. And if we can find a way to get Sims to take care of the ball, keeping him as our starter might just be our best option.

Just some early morning musings over coffee as I am still scarred for life by losing to Scum.

Gambling Week 2

Who does everyone like? Games I think I'm going with:

Notre Dame: -7.5 - Sam Hartman to me is a stud and I think they'll roll.
Oklahoma State: -3 - I think they get it done against ASU
UCF: -3 - Like Plumlee and he will give Boise trouble
Oregon: -6.5 - I think they roll TTech.
Nebraska: +3 - Just because I hate myself and want to lose money.

QB Comparison to Rhule's first year at Baylor

We all know Baylor went 1-11 in Rhule's first year, but I was curious about what the QB play/situation looked like. I thought Charlie Brewer started from the outset, but turns out that wasn't the case.

Rhule brought in Anu Soloman from Arizona as a grad transfer who, like Sims, was crowned as QB1 and team leader from the get go. Unfortunately for Soloman, he suffered a nasty concussion in the second game that ended his football career. Zach Wilson (not the Jets ZW) stepped in as QB1 and stunk it up through 3 or 4 games, one of which he threw 3 INTs in. Rhule pulled him and put in Brewer in the 4th quarter against WVU. Brewer provided a spark and remained the starter the rest of the season (and following 2 seasons).

It's not apples to apples, but I was surprised at the similarities. The big difference obviously being that Wilson and Brewer were both backups to start the year. Without an injury forcing your hand, it's a lot harder to pull the guy you've built up as QB1 and a team leader.

All that being said, while I wish no harm to the kid, I do think it would be a positive if Sims is unable to go this week - allowing HH and/or Chubba to show the coaches and the fans what they can do when the bullets are live and the game is within reach. As we all know, the grass isn't always greener even when your QB1 isn't very good (see last year and the year before), but at least that would be made apparent. I think most would rather know we're just plain f*cked at QB this year than wonder how bad can it really be behind Sims.

On the flipside, if one of the QBs provides a spark and/or manages the offense/game well (i.e., doesn't turn the ball over and averages more than a FG per quarter in scoring), I do have confidence in Rhule that he will go with whoever gives us the best chance, because I know he cares more about the team than his own ego. And I'm certain the players just want to win and would rally around whoever gives them the best shot to do so -- irrespective of all the goodwill and leadership cred Sims may have built up over the offseason.

Just my .02 (in the form of a long rambling post).
