Tapping the Brakes on Matt Rhule

We may need to hold back the expectations that Matt Rhule will be the new Coach.

Watching the podcast posted yesterday with Sean Callahan, Steve Sipple and Jim Rose. Many of you saw it too I’m sure.

Rose through water on the rumor/actually for sure comments made that Rhule was in Lincoln.

He said that would have been disrespectful towards Mickey and the Team, and disruptive of the rest of the season. It’s all they would have been thinking about for the rest of the season. They really wouldn’t be so intent on doing what the coaches wanted knowing they weren’t going to be here. I’m paraphrasing here.

In his opinion, an announcement would come a day or two after the Iowa game.

In Mickey’s press conference he said he knew nothing and no one had talked to him. If Rhule was in town and at the Athletic Offices and Stadium, Mickey would have known. And others would have too. It would have normally leaked out.

So we don’t know For Sure. We may need to slow down a little. It may not be Matt Rhule.

Coaches w/ 11-wins in playoff era

Since 2014, the first year in the CFB playoff era, there have been 520 total seasons played by P5 teams (65 teams x 8 seasons). Of these 520 seasons, 67 of them have finished with at least 11 wins (12.9%). These sixty-seven 11-win seasons were accomplished by 36 coaches (6.9%). 28 of these have been by the top 6 coaches in the list below, who are probably safely considered "the elite" coaches in the playoff era (maybe Kelly belongs on that list too).

Further down the list you see at least a couple of potential candidates. Reaching 11 wins puts them in fairly rare company. Some of these guys were eventually fired, some moved on to other jobs, some are still with the same teams.

8 – Saban (Alabama) * currently at 8 wins
5 - Dabo (Clemson) * currently at 9 wins
4 – Urban (Ohio St) * moved to the NFL where he...got freaky and fired
4 – Riley (Oklahoma) * currently at 9 wins at USC
4 – Smart (Georgia) * currently at 10 wins
3 – Day (Ohio St) * currently at 10 wins
3 – Franklin (Penn St) * currently at 8 wins
3 – Patterson (TCU) * resigned, but probably would have been fired last year
3 – Kelly (Notre Dame) * currently at 8 wins
2 – Dantonio (Michigan St) * resigned
2 – Chryst (Wisconsin) * was fired this year
2 – Helfrich (Oregon) * 13 wins, 11 wins, 9 wins, then went 4-8 and got fired
2 – Stoops (Oklahoma) * retired
1 – Jimbo (FSU) * struggling at A&M
1 – Johnson (GT) * resigned
1 – Fedora (UNC) * was fired after going 5-18 his last two seasons
1 – Narduzzi (Pitt) * 11 wins last year, 6-4 currently
1 – Clawson (Wake) * 11 wins last year, 6-4 currently
1 – Ferentz (Iowa) * f Iowa
1 – Harbaugh (Michigan) * currently at 11 wins
1 – Fleck (Minnesota) * currently 7-3
1 – Tucker (Michigan St) * 11 wins last year, 5-5 currently
1 – Andersen (Wisconsin) * currently an analyst at Weber St
1 – Briles (Baylor) * appears to be coaching in Italy
1 – Rhule (Baylor) * we back
1 – Aranda (Baylor) * 11 wins last year, 6-4 this year
1 – Gundy (Oklahoma St) * 12 wins last year, 7-3 this year
1 – Cristobal (Oregon) * currently 5-5 at Miami
1 – Shaw (Stanford) * currently 3-7
1 – Helton (USC) * currently 5-5 at GA Southern...1-0 vs Frost
1 – Whittingham (Utah) * currently 8-2
1 – Petersen (Washington) * resigned
1 – Leach (Washington St) * currently 6-4 at Miss St
1 – Mullen (Florida) * went 34-15 at Florida, got fired
1 – Orgeron (LSU) * went 51-20, won a natty, was "fired"
1 – Pinkel (Mizzou) * resigned for health reasons

Basketball NU must handle full-court press if it wants to leave St. John's with a win

“I’ve been pleased with how we have handled adversity at this point of the season, but it’s going to smack us in the face at some point tomorrow, and we have to handle it the right way if we have any chance of winning.”

Fred Hoiberg and the Nebraska men's basketball team knows what's waiting for them at St. John's tomorrow.

The assistant coach dilemma...

Watching today it makes you wonder if our last five head coaches had better asst coaches how much better we would be. No shit, right?

Recruiting better? Sure. Better HC's? Sure.

I wonder where NU might have been had Bo or Callahan had better assts? I swear BC might had worked had he not had Cosgrove. Scott as bad as he is, would have been better with better AC's but we were all in awe of him. Clearly we were wrong.

I know it starts at the top but AC's are critical to the process too. They recruit better and the develop better.

If Rhule or Aranda is the guy I pray they hire fully competent AC's. Without great AC's it's hard to imagine it will matter who we hire. We can't win with just a competent HC. We need world class AC's.

Matt Rhule = MKR?

Hey just trying to get ahead of the curve here - to avoid confusion or PTSD related to the Mike Riley era, I propose that anyone who insists on using acronyms for coaches' names, avoid calling Matt Rhule "MR" or "HCMR", and instead use his full name Matthew Kenneth Rhule to go with "MKR"

Also please disregard this when we end up hiring Jeff Monken AKA HCJM

Thanks,

How about Gage

Stenger, 2022 class recruited as an athlete because he can play defense or offense, excellent all-around athlete, currently listed as a Nickle . Watch his recruiting film it shows him at different positions including QB.

Stenger quarterbacked Millard South to an undefeated regular season and the No. 1 seed in the state playoffs. He threw for nearly 1,400 yards and 19 touchdowns and did not have an interception all season. He set a Class A state record with six touchdown passes in a first-round playoff matchup with Omaha North. He also rushed for nearly 600 yards and 11 touchdowns.

We need to get back to dual threat QB's.

Is Mickey throwing the current players under the bus like Frost did......

when he says the key to getting things turned around is recruiting better players?

Doesn't that say to the current players that they just aren't good enough?

Not saying he's wrong about needing better players, but it seems to me that he's doing the same thing Frost was rightly so heavily criticized for.

Football Casey Thompson, Myles Farmer updates and more from Mark Whipple, Bill Busch

Mark Whipple says the team has limited Casey Thompson a bit in practice, but he feels "a lot more" encouraged about him this week. Sounds like it's still optimistic that he will play Saturday.

Bill Busch said, just as Mickey Joseph did on Tuesday, that Myles Farmer is back from suspension and is practicing with the team. Appears that he will play against Wisconsin.

Those updates and more from today's press conference:

So here you have it about Mickey ...

Mickey told the OWH that he has NOT had an interview for the head coach but that he'd love to stay on at Nebraska as an assistant IF the job was right. Not a surprise but I think that likely means he's out of the running but may well continue at Nebraska depending on who the new head coach is. Not earth shattering news but something straight from Mickey.
