Football Behind Enemy Lines: Jim Leonhard and the Wisconsin coach search

Went a bit of a different route for this week’s Behind Enemy Lines. Focused less on the game and more on the big picture of Jim Leonhard, the Badgers’ own coach search and their up and down season.

Basketball Second-half collapse dooms Huskers at St. John’s

“Tough game. Certainly a tough half,” Fred Hoiberg said to the Huskers Radio Network after the game. “We showed a lot of grit, a lot of fight in that first half. We were all over the place. We were first to the floor. Then in the second half they flipped the script. They were the first to the floor. They made first contact on every shot.”

Nebraska falls 70-50 to St. John's on the road Thursday night:

My message had nothing to do with guns, open boarders etc. Since many of you only want to argue about things that have nothing to do with what I've posted I'm removing myself from this.

Argue away.
Mods, if you prefer please delete this thread. I wanted to but couldn't find that option.

For those of you who did express compassion, thank you.

A proud dad story about his son!

here goes!

At an early age I found out my son was claustrophobic so I knew he could not follow my steps and be a wrestler , so we went the hockey route. Ice was not close so we did roller blade hockey in Columbus He was very very good!

When he was in fifth grade he came up and told me he wanted to try the little kids wrestling program for that year!

I backed off me putting pressure on him and just let him try it out because the high school wrestlers were supposed to help them out and show them the ropes
Well the night of the program the whole family was there to cheer him on!

They announced his first match and it was against a kid who does the traveling programs so he had much experience!

I said to his Grandpa This will be a slaughter

and it was

His other match was against a kid fifty lbs heavier than him but also with no experience so Jacob did ok until he got too high and got rolled over and also pinned again

I watched my kid the whole night laughing and enjoying his friends and when it got over I watched him walking around the gym to come up to us in the stands half way to us he realized he forgot something and turned back and walked to the wrestling coached and thanked him
He then turned back and walked up the steps toward us

About three steps down from us I could see the dam of tears about to burst I got up walked down to him and gave him a big bear hug and through his sobs I told him
“Kid! This is all on me! If you ever want to do this again I will make damn sure to make sure that you are better prepared! I am so proud of you that you turned back around and went back and thanked your coach!
Now you always remember this! You put anyone of those kids on skates you could make feel even worse that how you feel right now! I am so proud of you!

Man oh man did I want to walk down to that coach and ask him what the hell was that all about!

Coach Search Gary Patterson updates his status

There has been some talk of Texas special assistant Gary Patterson being in contention for the Nebraska job. He tweeted this out this morning:

"For all that care one way or another I am committed to Sark and this staff to finish the journey! So please don’t believe any reports otherwise!"

Coach Search The Case For and Against Matt Rhule

@Zack_Carp

I think it makes sense that, should Rhule want our job, he then negotiates a lumpsum settlement of his Carolina buyout because we will be paying him less than $10M a year.

  • Carolina doesn’t want to be on the hook for $40M over 4 years
  • Rhule wants to make incremental money for working at a new job
  • Nebraska wants their coach to have a financial stake in the job
Once Rhule is sure he has found a job he would rather do than just sit and collect money, and he knows what it will pay, he goes to Carolina and says he is willing to take a settlement for a premium over the potential offset remainder. His arguments are he won’t take the job if he does get paid more than he gets paid for sitting around and he can tell Carolina it takes them off the hook should he get fired or quit.

I would think Carolina would be glad to get him working and take a $10M/year risk off the table.

Let’s say we pay $5.5M a year for 4 years – maybe Carolina settles the $40M obligation for $25M, and Rhule potential nets $7M incremental over 4 years for taking the Nebraska job. Carolina locks in a potential $15M savings. Nebraska is happy because Rhule knows his $5.5M from Nebraska, to the extent it is not fully guaranteed, goes away if he is fired or quits – he has a real economic stake in our comp package.

This negotiation would likely be taking place now if the Rhule rumors are correct, because I don’t thin Rhule would be willing to cut the $40M down unless and until he was sure he wanted to do the job and knew what it paid.

Nebraska would not be able to announce a hire right away because then Rhule loses much of his leverage to secure a premium over the potential Carolina remainder. In fact, he may not even agree to take the job until that settlement is done. The good news is that it almost certainly will get done as everybody is better off if it does.

The real reason to why it’s so quiet

Could the reason this coaching search is so quiet be because Trev has had this wrapped up for several weeks now? We literally haven’t heard any reliable sources come out with anything concrete about anyone, and not one flight tracker sighting yet. Maybe Trev’s number one choice was Urban Meyer all along? Think about it, Urban didn’t need to fly a private jet to Lincoln because he already was here for game day, and nobody was posting Urban sightings in Lincoln because he was already here. Trev fired Frost right before Urban was coming to town because he knew he could give Urban the ultimate tour of everything that Nebraska could offer, this could be done all out in the open without to much speculation from the media about offering him the job. I’m sure Trev has been vetting other coaches waiting for an answer from Urban but maybe Urban finally got back to Trev and last Thursday was the meeting with the regents to finalize everything. I’m not saying any of this as a fact but just something to ponder.
