Lots of losers on here....

If you can't see the difference in our defense that has looked the best it has looked in 10 plus years, I don't know what to tell you. We played against one of the better defenses in the Big ten and could have and should have won that game. The only mistake I saw from the coaching staff was when they didn't call a timeout right before halftime when we were at the one foot line. We dominated that football game and we were definitely the better team and if you can't see that you need to find a different team to root for, that's all!! Rhule and his staff already looked as good or better than any coaches we've had here since Osborne!

Football Column coming late tonight

Don’t wanna be a prisoner of the moment but, I mean, man that has to rank as one of Nebraska’s most deflating losses in recent years. Played the exact TYPE of game Rhule envisioned and preached all winter, spring and summer. They were in control in the exact way Rhule envisioned and preached all offseason. Table was set.

EVERYTHING this program can become under Rhule and even a lot of what they wanna do this year is still on the table. But good God, after so many losses that looked so much like that one, I don't understand how or why anyone can spin zone it into anything other than “that was crushing and this is exhausting.”

And I've only been here for 13 games! Infuriating, debilitating, whatever word or feeling for it, it's just killer.

Have a lot of other postgame content to knock out ASAP. After that, will gather my thoughts for a postgame column. No clue when I'll have that wrapped up so could be late tonight or early morning. But it'll be up at some point.

Postgame PC

Rhule’s PC made me sick. More of the same - we were close and we will get better. We almost won despite our mistakes, blah, blah…

Up to this point Rhule has done everything possible to make us believe he understands our fans. But that upbeat PC fell short of what many of us wanted to hear because there was no contrition that the game was an absolute $h#$show, nor did Rhule point the thumb in my opinion.

How about? "I promised we would run – we didn’t or couldn't when we needed to. I promised we would win the 4th Q – we didn’t because of my decisions. I promised we wouldn’t beat ourselves including penalties - but we did. I promised we would take care of the ball – but we didn’t. I have a $72 million contract, I let the State of Nebraska and all the fans across the country and at the game down, and I’m deeply sorry."

I can't see NU making a jump until the HC, coaches and players actually are angry about losing. Say what you want about Bo, but that guy hated losing and he showed it.

This was just another in a long line of adequate-good defensive efforts ruined by an offense that commits jr high mistakes, does not use obvious assets (e.g. TEs), goes away from what is working, and refuses to make changes when needed.

Important game stats SIAP

Sims 11/19 for 58% with only a couple passes traveling more than 10 yds. 3 INTs = 1 INT for every 3.7 completions.

Top RB had only 7 carries (7.9 ypc avg) 2nd string had 1 carry. 3rd string had 9 carries (3 ypc avg)
QB had… 19 carries.

Neb had 2 WRs with 3 catches. RB had 2 catches. A few guys with 1 catch. #1 WR and #1 TE had 0.
*For reference: Minn. had 3 guys catching 5, 7, 9 passes respectively = total 24 completions to our 11.

*We did outrush Minn by a lot, and our average yards per play was +1.7 yds over Minn, which is significant.

The rest of that sh*tty game has been discussed quite a lot, so I’ll leave it there.

Last drive play calling - it sucked.

Surely this must have been discussed, but I can't wade through the manure to find it. I know I'm not the only one that, prior to the last drive, said out loud, "Do NOT, under any circumstances, try to force Sims to drive this team down the field with passes. That would be insane." How could Satterfield dial up multiple pass plays in a row knowing what Sims had shown in the passing game? How could Rhule let him? They should have been playing to get one first down. Then another, with the goal of simply working the clock and playing for overtime. The way our defense was playing I liked our chances in OT with no clock and the ability to run Sims. Everything else about the game aside, this is what I'll remember about this game.

Football Postgame Notes: Nebraska at Minnesota (Huskers.com)

- Tonight's game marked the fourth consecutive season Nebraska has opened away from home against a Big Ten Conference opponent

- The Huskers lost their third consecutive game in the month of August, falling to 14-3 all-time in the month

- Nebraska lost to Minnesota for the fifth straight time, as the Golden Gophers improved to 8-5 against the Huskers as Big Ten Conference foes and 37-25-2 all-time

- Nebraska fell to 98-31-5 all-time in season openers, losing the season opener for the fourth straight season

- Minnesota's 251 total yards were the fewest yards Nebraska allowed since limiting Maryland to 206 yards in Nov. 23, 2019

- Running back Rahmir Johnson had a 63-yard kickoff return to open the second half. The 63-yard kickoff return was a career long for Johnson and the longest by a Husker since a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by JD Spielman against Arkansas State in 2017

- Sophomore receiver Alex Bullock had three receptions for 56 yards in tonight's game, the first three receptions of his career. Bullock scored Nebraska's first points of the night with a 35-yard TD reception in the third quarter

- True freshman defensive end Cameron Lenhardt earned a start in tonight's game. He is only the ninth Husker true freshman (excluding kickers) to start a season opener since freshmen regained eligibility in 1972

- Lenhardt joins Maliek Collins as the only true freshmen defensive linemen to start a game for Nebraska since freshmen regained eligibility in 1972. Collins started one game as a true freshman during the 2013 season, earning a start in the 2014 Gator Bowl.

- Minnesota native Bryce Benhart made his 30th career start, all of which have come at right tackle. Benhart joins Eric Anderson, Dan Vili Waldrop and Zach Wiegert as the fourth Husker to start 30 games at right tackle.

- Minneapolis native Omar Brown intercepted a third quarter pass to end a Gopher scoring threat. The pick was the first of Brown's Nebraska career and his ninth career interception.

- Blaise Gunnerson and Nash Hutmacher each recorded their first career sack in the fourth quarter.

- Running back Gabe Ervin had a career-long 27-yard run in the third quarter, bettering a 21-yard run against Buffalo in 2021.

- Senior linebacker Luke Reimer made five tackles in tonight's game to increase his career total to 250. He is the 13th Husker with 250 career tackles.

- Punter Brian Buschini had a 60-yard punt in the first quarter of tonight's game. He now has 50 punts of 50 yards or more in his collegiate career.

- Cornerback Quinton Newsome made his 25th consecutive start in tonight's game

- Tonight's game captains were OT Bryce Benhart, RB Gabe Ervin, DE Blaise Gunnerson and S Omar Brown.

Odd Strategy Question

This may sound bizarre, but with only a few seconds left before the end of regulation, why not stick a few players deep and along the sideline and let their running back or receiver run out the clock on a long run. We tackled their guy with three seconds on the clock. If he ran toward the end.zone it's game over before he crosses the line and unless he slid and took a TO they would never use the last timeout. I've never seen teams try that but it increases your odds of winning by not letting them attempt a field goal and you are deep enough to cover and throws.

Glass half full....

Not the ending I was hoping for, however

Special Teams: Finally looked like it was not a liability. Actually made plays, all phases looked to be more than serviceable. I like not fair catching kick offs.
I was glad to see the young kicker not look like a young kicker.

Defense: Looks like there is definitely something to build on. They play hard and rally to the ball which is refreshing.
Need to clean up some coverages, but anytime you hold a B1G team to 2.2 ypc, you have done well. As their comfort level grows, we should see steady improvement.
Overall, better than I anticipated. I like the D and as the younger players get reps, it should get better.

Offense: Ran the ball with some success. Run blocking looked better, at times we actually relocated the line of scrimmage. They just need to get out of their own way.
This is also where I think we will see the most new faces emerge as the season progresses.
We have big bodies TEs, we made little attempt to get them the ball. During the pick in the end zone NB was standing at the goal line looking for the ball with no defender on him.
Bottom line you cannot give the ball away 4 times and expect to win the game. Lots to clean up with this unit.

I don't believe the sky if falling. I do believe some things need improved immediately. Week 1 to week 2 is supposed to be the most improvement, time will tell. GBR!🎈

Lots of mistakes, what can and will be fixed?

Some mistakes that need to be fixed or worked around.

Sims Interceptions / Poor vision - Probably can't be fixed
Grant's fumble - should be fixed
Piper / Boerkircher false starts - should be fixed
Harzog giving up the outside - should be fixed
Robinson's targeting - should be fixed
Corcoran's pass protection - Probably can't be fixed
Sims ran to much, 19 carries - Maybe can be fixed

Some good things that need to continue

Defense held Minnesota to 55 yards on 25 attempts
Defense held them to 196 yards on 24-44 pass attempts
Great KR by Johnson
We were the more physical team

Sucks to lose, but for a first game for a new HC as a 7 point dog, it wasn't terrible. Fix some of the mistakes and we should be bowl bound.
