Glass half full

The D played an inspired game.
We gave away a game where we were underdogs on the road, plus a board consensus that this was a penciled in loss at best.
Rhule may have no choice but to bench Grant. Why wasn’t Gabe on the field?
I think White knows who can make plays for him better than Satterfield does right now. Excepting Sims, of course.
On the road. Full stadium. New coach. It’s OK to be pissed, but a lot of kids played hard tonight and there is something to work with.

Disappointed, but all in

My wife and I were able to sit with our family-daughter, her husband, their two boys and one of their friends. We had great seats on the fifty yard line half way up on the press box side. Last night's outcome was heart-breaking and disappointing and the loss still stings this morning. However, I saw an impressive defense and special teams play. We were striking people all night long. Without the critical turnovers that happened at critical times, we'd be celebrating an impressive debut of our new staff and our players. I support Coach Rhule this season, next season and into the future. He inherited a mess and it will take time. I appreciate his leadership, his approach and the way he has handled our program. I'm thankful that he is our coach. Go Big Red! 🏈🚩

Special teams

They appear to have improved a ton and gone from a horrible liability a few years ago to just below average last year to an advantage this year. I thought the kick coverage was outstanding, and the rest of it was very good as well. Rahmir’s return got us right back in the game. My ratings would go;
Offense overall C-
Running game C+
Passing game D or F
Defense overall B+
Rush Defense A-
Pass defense B-
Special teams A

It was all in the post practice press conferences

Offense was turning it over a lot in camp
Rhule talked about the defense being good but never was effusive about the offense
Sims accuracy issues were a given when he transferred here
We don’t have any WRs

What we saw last night was what should have been expected

Defense played way better than I thought But that tracks with what Rhule was saying as well

This is gonna to take time

Colorado Game

Since sleeping off last night's Rhule's Frost-like debut doesn't seem to have made me feel any better, the only other option is to look forward.

Is it too soon to call the CU game a must win game? In order to keep the goal of going to a bowl game realistic, keep the apparently still fragile psychy of the team from bottoming out early in the season, and keep a desperate and exhausted fan base from gravitating to the ledge, it seems like one.

If CU plays TCU competitively this weekend, it seems like they are going to come into the game with more confidence than NU will. Nothing they saw watching NU play last night is going to put doubt in their heads, and Folsom is going to be a hostile environment for Deion's home debut. Hopefully, Rhule can show the team and the fans that he can instill the confidence, abilities, and execution to step on the throat of an opponent in the 4th quarter. Fair or not, NU isn't Temple or Baylor in terms of patience for a slow rebuild.

Football QB run game helps offense against defense in scrimmage

To Matt Rhule’s eyes, the offense is a bit ahead of the defense right now.

The QBs being live during Saturday’s scrimmage helped the offense win the day, and their legs were a big factor. Here’s more:

First Game Grades

QB - D- - I won't go the full F because he did provide some things with his legs, but he's got to be better. WR's also have to help him out a little more, but hopefully Satterfield can get him to adjust.

RB - C- The part I liked is they all seemed to be going straight ahead this year. Not a lot of dancing, and getting upfield. All of the backs broke some tackles. Just keep chipping away.

OL - C- - I actually think there was a little improvement here. Benhart still is pretty bad, but Sims needs to help these guys out a little bit.

TE - C- - Seemed to block ok, but they were on the milk carton outside of that.

DL - B- -Outside of the pass rush they held up well. The youngsters held their own and I thought Nash and TRob (until the penalty) controlled their area

LB - A- -They made the plays they were supposed to. I thought all of them looked pretty damn good.

Secondary - B - Played pretty salty the entire game. Our safeties are dudes. The corners are good too and just had a couple minor breakdowns.

ST - B+ -Decent. Great kick return, seemed to be good on coverage. Made the only FG and Buschini was good

Offense - D+
Defense - B
ST - B+

The other good things were just the number of players that got on the field. This is going to go a long way in rebuilding. A lot of people saw the field last night and that is a positive.

Final thought - Still have no idea how that was not a TD right before half. Screw job.
