Football Rhule fires away on Michigan sign stealing, Big Ten officials crushing Huskers in two games, Nebraska QB play

Simply a loaded one today. Alongside @Greg Smith, we broke down about as revealing of a presser he's had during his first year as head coach (one-year anniversary is Nov. 26)

Rhule fired away with thoughts on:

>> Michigan's sign-stealing scandal and how it affected the Huskers.

>> Big Ten officials and, more specifically, the inexcusable wrong calls on replay reviews that have made a profound impact on two Nebraska games this season – first against Minnesota and then against Michigan State.

>> Heinrich Haarberg's unquestioned status as the Huskers' starting QB, what it's like to play the position at Nebraska, especially with all of the incredibly difficult challenges this offense has tasked him with doing.

>> Living in the fish bowl of Nebraska football.

>> Thoughts on the Maryland offense, led by quarterback Taulia Tagavoiloa who he compared to Patrick Mahomes and a Blackshirts defense that has done everything great except for two things: Takeaways and limiting explosive pass plays.

Volleyball Beason and Reilly Pick Up Big Ten Awards

From Nebraska Athletics Communications:

Merritt Beason was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday, while Bergen Reilly was named Big Ten Setter of the Week.

For Beason, it's the fourth time this season the junior opposite hitter has received Big Ten Player of the Week. Reilly, meanwhile, has been selected Big Ten Setter of the Week four times this season.

Beason had a career weekend for the Huskers, averaging 6.00 kills per set on .447 hitting with 1.75 digs per set and 1.00 blocks per set. She totaled 48 kills with just six errors on 94 swings in wins at No. 16 Penn State and Rutgers. In a 3-2 reverse sweep of the Nittany Lions, Beason had a career-high 27 kills on .426 hitting with five digs and three blocks and one ace. The Gardendale, Ala., native had six kills alone in the decisive fifth set. She followed up that career performance with 21 kills on a .475 hitting percentage with nine digs and five blocks in a sweep of the Scarlet Knights. Her 21 kills in the sweep tied Kelsey Robinson for the most by a Husker in a three-set match in the 25-point rally-scoring era (since 2008).

Reilly averaged 11.88 assists per set and 3.13 digs per set while posting double-doubles in both matches. The Sioux Falls, S.D., native had 52 assists and 13 digs in the 3-2 comeback win at Penn State on Friday. She followed up on Sunday at Rutgers with 43 assists and 12 digs.

Basketball Huskers do their job, rout Lindenwood in season opener

Five players scored in double-figures Monday as Nebraska routed Lindenwood by 32 points, 84-52, to start the year 1-0.

The Huskers did what they were supposed to do against an inferior team.

Tougher tests await, but tonight was a positive start.

Volleyball Huskers sweep Rutgers, stay unbeaten behind another star showing from Merritt Beason

On Friday night, Merritt Beason fueled the No. 1 Huskers to a sensational come-from-behind win in their battle against No. 16 Penn State, driving the bus with a career-high 27 kills on .426 hitting to lead Nebraska from its first 0-2 deficit of the season to a thrilling five-set win.

Less than 48 hours later, Beason was back at it with another star showing: She pored in 21 kills on .475 hitting against Rutgers on Sunday afternoon, leading Nebraska to a sweep of the Scarlet Knights (25-15, 25-20, 25-18) on the road in New Jersey.

What it will take to get 6+ wins...

Long-time lurker here - I hope I can bring something to the table. I love data, so that will play a large part in what I usually post. Anyway - FPI still likes us to get bowl-eligible at roughly 75%. I also think a 6th win is more likely than not, though each of the final 3 teams we play is ranked well ahead of us in the FPI.

What I think is obvious to most of us is how good the defense has been the past month or so. In fact, the data would say the have been almost heroic. Based on expected points per drive, taking into account starting field position, the defense has held our last four opponents, collectively, to about 70 points less than the average/expected number of points.

Purdue was the best performance, as the Blackshirts held the Boilermakers to almost 28 points less than the expected scoring total. Even this weekend, the Spartans scored 6.85 fewer points than expected using this metric. So while it wasn't their best outing, it was still better than average.

In summary, based on the struggles of our offensive unit, it seems likely that our best chance at snagging at least one more win will hinge on whether or not our defense can put together one more "hero-level" performance. I think they can, and I think it is most likely to happen vs. Iowa - I would think it would be even money that Iowa's offense would be able to score a single TD on Black Friday. Sorry in advance for the lack of formatting; I'm still learning here.

NEB Soccer: Huskers earn NCAA Tournament selection

From Nebraska Athletics Communications:

The Nebraska soccer team earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament when the 64-team bracket was announced on Monday.

The Huskers will host South Dakota State on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7:05 p.m. (CT) at Barbara Hibner Stadium in the first round. The winner will face either Tennessee or Xavier in the second round.

This year marks the 13th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and first since 2016. NU has made it to the Sweet 16 on eight occasions and twice advanced to the Elite Eight. Nebraska holds a 17-12 record all-time in the NCAA Tournament.

The Huskers are 14-3-3 this season and won the Big Ten regular season title with a 7-1-2 mark. In the Big Ten semifinals, NU battled but fell 3-1 to then-No. 12 Wisconsin 3-1.

The second round, third round and quarterfinals will each be held at campus sides leading up to the Women’s College Cup Semifinals (Dec. 1) and National Championship Game (Dec. 4), both of which will be played at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.

Football Malachi Coleman's strides as a blocker catching Matt Rhule's attention

Good stuff today from Rhule on how he thinks Malachi Coleman is affecting games without catching passes. I thought the offense's first play against MSU on Saturday really spoke to that (I show it inside):

RB Coach EJ Barthel

The RB rotation has been and continues to be awful yesterday, blatantly cost us the MN game as well putting Grant in the game when all we needed was to not fumble. Barthel needs to get his head out of his Ass. Emmett Johnson also needs to get 70% of the carries at this point, he’s the ONLY decisive and explosive RB I have seen all year.

Barthel has been putting the wrong guys in at the wrong time, not keeping guys in when they’re getting hot, and the guy he had as the 5th best RB coming into the year has looked the most explosive and decisive than any that have played all year.

Recruiting wise who is he bringing in now that he’s lost Lacy? Some 3 star that nobody has heard of? This is Nebraska in a P2 conference with a HC that wants to be a power running team. If he didn’t have a line out to a solid plan B after Lacy that’s on him. Getting a Blue chip recruit at RB should be expected every year.

Screw You Guys

Who are making a huge crusade reviving all these topics in an attempt to dog on HH. Like seriously, love him or hate him, he's literally all we got. Support your damn team or piss off. Go cheer for someone else.

Next year's likely gonna look different. Might not... The injuries on offense are insane. This season was always going to be about growth, not dominance. Some people are straight delusional and out of touch with reality. I'd hate to have to work alongside someone so out of touch in the work place...

Go suck on Sims' checked out nuts. Go HH, and GBR. We've got at least 1-2 more wins in them and go bowling finally!
