Basketball Live thread: Nebraska vs. Lindenwood

I'll start this thread early because the Big Ten's availability report came out for the college basketball games tonight.

Nebraska lists Keisei Tominaga (ankle), Juwan Gary (suspension), Blaise Keita (ankle) and Ahron Ulis (still waiting word from the NCAA) as OUT. No one is listed as questionable.

Rienk Mast, Josiah Allick and Ramel Lloyd Jr. were nowhere to be found on the report, which tells me they'll be available tonight vs. Lindenwood. The game tips off at 7 p.m. and us available online at B1G Plus with Jessica Coody and Erick Strickland on the call.

UPDATE: It appears Lloyd was accidentally left off the report. He’s now listed as OUT.

Football Wisconsin game time, TV information announced

Per the Huskers:

The Big Ten Conference and its television partners announced the game time and television information for Nebraska’s Nov. 18 football game at Wisconsin. The Huskers and Badgers will kick off at 6:30 p.m. at Camp Randall Stadium with the game televised on NBC.

The NBC contest will be Nebraska’s first appearance on the network this season. The 2023 football season marks NBC’s first as a broadcast partner with the Big Ten Conference. It will mark Nebraska’s first game on NBC since an overtime victory at Notre Dame in 2000.

With Monday’s announcement, game times and broadcast information are set for Nebraska’s final three regular-season games. This week’s matchup with Maryland at Memorial Stadium will be broadcast on Peacock, NBC’s streaming service, with kickoff set for shortly after 11 a.m. Information on subscribing to Peacock can be found at Huskers.com/watch. Loving NU athletics right now

Has been a longtime coming….

Women‘s Volleyball 23-0, ranked #1, playing clutch…with a young team…honestly, I would‘ve expected what they’re doing now to have happened next yr.

Women’s Soccer makes the NCAA tournament.

Women’t Basketball just received the commitment from a top 25 recruit (homegrown mind you) that could’ve gone anywhere in the country she wanted….fringe top 25 team to begin the year.

Men’s Basketball starts the season off with a nice all around W, minus their most dangerous offensive weapon. Really looking forward to seeing what this team can do. There is some talent on this team…do not have to rely on one-two players to make things happen. There are multiple options.

Men’s Football…Rhule and staff have things headed in the right direction. Give it another year or two and I think we’ll be competing with the so-called heavyweights of the conference…going to be a killer conference with the four new teams coming onboard.

If you’re not excited about Husker athletics, you never will be….

Saturday will mark just the third all-time matchup between Nebraska and Maryland and only the second in Lincoln. The previous matchup at Memorial Stadium was a 28-7 Nebraska win in 2016.

8 - Eight of Nebraska's nine opponents have been held to less than 100 rushing yards. Nebraska last held eight foes to under 100 rushing yards in 2009, and has not held nine opponents to less than 100 yards on the ground in this century.

46 - Nebraska has had 46 different players start at least one game on offense or defense this season. That includes 26 players on offense and 20 on defense. Tommi Hill has started games on both sides of the ball.

THE MATCHUP
Nebraska returns to Memorial Stadium for the first of two November home games, taking on Maryland on Saturday. Kickoff between the Huskers and Terrapins is set for shortly after 11 a.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on Peacock, NBC's streaming service. The game can be heard on the Huskers Radio Network, the official Huskers App and Huskers.com. Saturday's game will also be Nebraska's Military Appreciation and Veterans Day Salute game.

Nebraska enters the game with a 5-4 record and a 3-3 Big Ten Conference mark. The Huskers are coming off a 20-17 setback at Michigan State last Saturday. The Huskers were tied 10-10 at halftime, but 10 Michigan State points in an eight-minute span in the middle of the second half spelled the difference. The loss kept Nebraska in search of a sixth victory to gain bowl eligibility in the 2023 season.

Nebraska plays two of its three remaining games at home. The Huskers are 4-1 at Memorial Stadium this season and are looking for a fifth home victory for the first time since winning all seven home games in the 2016 campaign.

Maryland comes to Lincoln with a 5-4 record, including a 2-4 mark in Big Ten Conference play. The Terps opened the year with five straight victories, but have dropped their past four games, including a pair of losses to opponents ranked in the top 10.

Coach Mike Locksley's team is headlined by one of the Big Ten's most explosive offenses, as Maryland ranks third in the conference in total offense at nearly 400 yards per game. Maryland ranks second in the Big Ten in passing offense at 280.8 yards per game. Defensively, the Terps are stout against the run, allowing just 114.7 yards per game on the ground.

SERIES HISTORY
Saturday's meeting will be just the third all-time between the schools, and the first since 2019.

- Maryland will visit Nebraska for the second time, with 19th-ranked Nebraska defeating the Terrapins, 28-7 in 2016

- Nebraska's 54-7 victory at Maryland in 2019 is the Huskers' second-largest margin of victory in a Big Ten Conference game and its largest on the road. The 54 points are the most by Nebraska is a Big Ten road game

Michael Locksley is in his sixth season leading the Maryland football program and has led the Terrapins to a 5-4 record in 2023.

Locksley returned to Maryland after a three-year stop at Alabama from 2016 to 2018, where he spent time as an offensive analyst for one season and offensive coordinator in 2017 and 2018. Before his three seasons with the Crimson Tide, Locksley worked as an offensive coordinator on the Maryland coaching staff from 2012 to 2015.

Locksley earned his first experience as a head coach at New Mexico (2009 to 2011), where he posted a 2-26 overall record in three seasons with the Lobos.

Locksley played four seasons as a defensive back at Towson State from 1988 to 1991 and also was a member of the Towson State men's basketball program in 1991 and 1992.

Locksley will be facing Nebraska for the second time in his career as a head coach after suffering a 54-7 loss to the Huskers in 2019.

LAST MEETING

November 23, 2019

NEBRASKA 54, MARYLAND 7

College Park, Maryland -
Junior receiver JD Spielman caught seven passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns, sophomore quarterback Adrian Martinez compiled 288 yards of total offense, and a smothering, opportunistic Blackshirt defense led Nebraska to a dominating 54-7 victory over Maryland on Saturday afternoon.

Nebraska (5-6, 3-5 Big Ten Conference) won for the first time since Oct. 5, producing its largest margin of victory in a Big Ten game, while Maryland (3-8, 1-7) remained winless since the same date with its sixth consecutive loss.

The 54 points were the most the Huskers have ever scored in a Big Ten road game, and tied for their most in any Big Ten game. In playing at Maryland for the first time in school history, Nebraska collected its first November road victory since 2015, when it won at Rutgers.

Spielman, with his fourth 100-yard receiving game this season, increased his season total to 864 receiving yards, making him the first player in Nebraska history with three 800-yard receiving seasons. He also moved into third place on the school charts in career receptions (167, tied with Jordan Westerkamp) and receiving yards (2,512).

Martinez, 16-of-25 passing for 194 yards and two touchdowns, also ran for 94 yards, as Nebraska finished with 531 total yards, including 305 rushing. The Huskers committed only one penalty and gained 31 first downs.

The Nebraska defense, meanwhile, forced and recovered four fumbles, including one on special teams, and held Maryland scoreless until running back Javon Leake's 58-yard touchdown run with 3:13 remaining in the game. Prior to that, the Terrapins had run only two plays in Nebraska territory, none beyond the 48-yard line.

Nebraska collected a season-high six sacks and held Maryland to 206 total yards, the fewest the Huskers have allowed in a game this season, and narrowly missed its first shutout in 10 years.

Nebraska led 34-0 at halftime behind two touchdown passes from Martinez, a pair of 29-yard field goals by walk-on kicker Matt Waldoch and a Blackshirt defense that forced two turnovers and twice stopped Maryland on fourth down in Nebraska territory.

The first forced turnover came on Maryland's first place from scrimmage. Junior cornerback Decaprio Bootle jarred the football loose from Leake, and junior safety Marquel Dismuke caught the ball in the air, giving Nebraska possession at the Maryland 18-yard line.

Junior running back Dedrick Mills scored two plays later on a 6-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead with 11:50 remaining in the first quarter. Mills rushed 12 times for 65 yards, all in the first half.

On their next possession, the Huskers drove 77 yards in 11 plays and scored on a quarterback sneak by Martinez from the 1-yard line for a 14-0 lead. Martinez completed a 30-yard pass to tight end Austin Allen for a key play in the series.

Isaac Armstrong delivered a pooch kick on the ensuing kickoff that Leake fumbled and lost, and sophomore cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt recovered, giving the Huskers the ball at the Maryland 22-yard line. Nebraska settled for Waldoch's first field goal for a 17-0 lead with 3:28 remaining in the first quarter.

The Blackshirts forced a three-and-out, and Nebraska began its next drive at its 27-yard line. The Huskers needed only seven plays to score again, with Spielman making a highlight-reel touchdown catch that deflected off two Maryland defenders in the end zone. The 25-yard pass from Martinez on a third-and-11 play pushed the lead to 24-0.

A third-down sack by blitzing junior linebacker JoJo Domann forced another three-and-out, and on Nebraska's next series, freshman quarterback Luke McCaffrey, playing wide receiver on the play, connected with Spielman on a reverse pass for a 28-yard gain to the Maryland 24. Martinez gained 20 yards on an option keeper to the 4-yard line, but on the next play, Martinez underthrew his receiver, and Maryland intercepted the pass in the end zone.

The Blackshirts responded by forcing Maryland's third fumble of the game, a ball senior cornerback Lamar Jackson forced loose and senior linebacker Mohamed Barry recovered at the Nebraska 31-yard line.

Nebraska punted, but senior defensive lineman Khalil Davis and junior defensive end Ben Stille teamed for a fourth-down sack that gave Nebraska possession at the Maryland 36-yard line with 5:42 remaining. That led to a 16-yard touchdown pass from Martinez to Spielman for a 31-0 lead.

Senior defensive lineman Darrion Daniels and Stille teamed for a fourth-down stop on fourth-and-1 that gave Nebraska the ball at the Maryland 40 with 2:03 remaining, and it led to Waldoch's second field goal that ended the half.

The 34-0 halftime lead tied Nebraska's largest halftime lead in a Big Ten Conference game, matching a 34-0 lead at Minnesota in 2011. The last time Nebraska had a bigger halftime lead in a conference game was a 41-0 lead over Iowa State in Lincoln in 2001.

Waldoch added yet another 29-yard field goal in the third quarter, and another walk-on, Harrison Martin, kicked an 18-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

The Huskers scored two second-half touchdowns. Freshman running back Rahmir Johnson capped a 10-play, 60-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and McCaffery led a 10-play, 50-yard series that he ended with a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

McCaffrey, who also caught a pass, rushed for 83 yards on 10 carries.

Everything is going to be ugly this year. Enjoy the wins

The program is not built yet. NW is terrible on offense and we are terrible on offense as well. As bad a first quarter as I can remember but the defense held them to 3 in that quarter. This team has guts if not talent. Our offense has been decimated by injury, much more than normal. This team gave NW a lot of chances with the offense's ineptitude and still gutted out a win. We're down 4/4 of our top WRs and 2/3 of our top RBs. We weren't that talented to begin with. I'm encouraged that Rhule is grinding out wins with toughness.

Burglars beware

A burglar broken into a home.
He heard a soft voice say, "Jesus is watching you."
Thinking it was just his imagination, he continued his search.
Again, "Jesus is watching you."
He turned his flashlight around, and saw a parrot in a cage.
He asked the parrot if he was the one talking.
The parrot said, "Yes."
He asked the parrot his name.
The parrot said, "Moses."
The burglar asked, "What kind of people would name their parrot, Moses?"
The parrot replied, "The same kind of people who would name their pitbull
Jesus."

For anyone who has missed it, here are the comments – in full – from Fox Sports NFL and CFB rules analyst Dean Blandino (former NFL VP of Officiating and currently the XFL Head of Officiating as well) on the two most controversial calls from Nebraska-MSU. Also, the full commentary from the FS1 broadcast duo on Saturday on those two calls, the non-call on the DPI against Coleman and more.

Spoiler: They were in just as much disbelief as you and Matt Rhule after all of the calls/non-calls yesterday:

Basketball Amy Williams gains the commitment of Britt Prince

Big-time stuff from Amy Williams and the Huskers women's basketball team. Elkhorn North 2024 guard Britt Prince commits to Nebraska:

According to ESPN's HoopGurlz rankings, Prince is the No. 28 overall recruit in the nation and a five-star. The 5-foot-11 guard came out with a top 11 back in September that included Nebraska, Creighton, Iowa, Iowa State, Indiana, Oklahoma, Oregon, North Carolina, Baylor, USC and Louisville. The Huskers get her.

Prince was the Gatorade girls player of the year last March and led Elkhorn North to its third Class B title in as many seasons. She averaged 24 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals.

QB NIL valuations

Know y’all are sick of me railing on this, and it nauseates me, too, but the numbers are staggering…

Top 25 teams starting QB’s have NIL valuations range from (lowest) was K State’s Will Howard, $299k. And this includes TULANE’s QB, $450k. Top 10 guys are all north of $1M, for the most part. Two schools didn’t publish, Utah and KU. Anyone wanna guess how much Haarberg and Sims are worth? Our starting QB’s valuation is one Third that of the lowest paid QB in the top 25. And it’s NOT because we don’t have the funds.

This isn’t a tough problem, Husker fans. It’s our program’s current Philosophy that is.

This one is rather loaded with info, so hope you give it a read! Stuff in there on:

>> Big Ten East's Michigan State won a Big Ten West-style game
>> 3rd + 4th down conversions were more important than I realized on Saturday
>> Season-long numbers on turnovers + a stunning reduction in penalties
>> Nebraska's explosive-play TD numbers for the season + their opponents' explosives over last 4 games
>> Jaidyn Doss finished with 0 catches against MSU – yet still proved that he's emerging as a go-to target on crucial downs
