Basketball WBB WNIT FINAL: Nebraska 77, Northern Iowa 57

We're getting set for the second round of the WNIT here at PBA as Nebraska (17-14, 8-10 B1G) takes on Northern Iowa (23-9, 16-4). Second straight Missouri Valley Conference foe for the Huskers in the postseason as they beat Missouri State 74-65 on Thursday. On Friday, the Panthers came away with an 88-76 victory over Colorado State to earn their trip to Lincoln.

PBA is filling out nice right now on this Sunday afternoon. Nebraska has never won two home postseason games in program history. Here's the recap from Missouri State on Thursday in case you want to catch up.:

Wrestling Postmortem

Actually watched a decent amount of wrestling this year for the first time. Always somewhat followed but never watched much. Admittedly know very little about the sport.

First off did S Lee really not wrestle in the medal round? Was it injury related? If not can anyone play devils advocate for why that’s not a total b**ch move?

Obviously an underwhelming NU performance today. So was it bad match ups, bad luck? Or is it something with Mark Manning and his guys performing at the highest level?

Someone in the know fill me in please.

Recruiting First spring practice visitors…

The Huskers are expecting to have prospects in town for the first spring practice under Matt Rhule.

McGahee is excited to meet everyone.

“I‘ve talked to all of the coaches a bunch of times over the phone but I haven’t met most them in person so I’m looking forward to that. I’m looking forward to seeing the coaches in action and how they run their practices. Coach Coop told me they just finished a bunch of new facilities so I want to see those as well.”

Massey told me what he is looking forward to about the visit too.

“Meeting face to face with coaches. Talking with the O-line and observing how practices are at Nebraska.”

There could be more guys that pop up as well. Rhule really wants to get aggressive with these practice visits.

Congratulations Creighton

For winning an ncaa tournament game and accomplishing what no other major league college basketball teams in the state of Nebraska has ever done. No other Nebraska team has won a game in the tournament whether in the state of Nebraska or outside the state in our country. Not in this country or in our hemisphere. Not in our hemisphere or the other earth's hemisphere. In fact, all known hemispheres and spheres in our solar system and to the best of our knowledge in the known universe and possibly unknown universes (and their spheres). And it stands to reason that any parallel universes with parallel Nebraska universities would equally not have won an ncaa bracket game. Not other than Creighton.
Although, a parallel universe may have slight differences so, even though remote, it's possible that a university not named Creighton, in that parallel universe, may have won a first round game. Second round probably not. Then it's really stretching to say it's parallel.

So Creighton, today, accomplished more clout than any other major Nebraska education unit since man crawled out of his cave in amazement at the orb in the sky.

One more thing. You fulfilled my bracket expectation so kudos to that (another single point of light in the history of Nebraska) but you'll need to beat it Sunday because I don't have you going any further.

March Madness!!!

Yup, it's madness all right. It's madness to play an entire season and then throw out all of the accomplishments of that season for one game against an opponent you have never seen before. Madness to give automatic bids to teams who may have a chance to have one good game and beat a big boy, but throughout the season, could not hold up against the big boys or 50 teams who didn't make the dance. Madness that a team that finishes 12-8 in a conference is in 2nd place and a 4 seed in the tournament and a team that finishes 9-11 in that same conference and beats several teams in the dance (one twice) can't even get invited to the consolation tournament.

Finally, madness that college basketball is a shadow of what it once was, when all of the elite players stayed for 4 years and the most physically talented players weren't a group of one-and-done freshmen. The thing that differentiates the NBA star caliber players from all of the others of similar size, speed, and strength is that the NBA star caliber players are almost all elite scorers, players with unique skill sets to put up significant points nearly every night. ALL of those players are out of college by the end of March of their freshman year, before their game has been fully developed. That's one of the reasons why a team in the dance this year was only able to put up 40 points in a 40 minute game.

The lack of elite scorers evens the playing field enough in a "one loss and you go home tournament" that any freakish thing can happen, and as we have seen the past few years, it has. Some people think that this is great! Yeah, watching basketball with at best G-league players is SO much fun! Shoot, it's almost as fun as the choice I have in early June every year to either watch the Braves (with some of the best players in the world on both teams) or the CWS.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that while College Football still has a broad appeal despite the multiple recent changes designed to destroy it, College Basketball has relegated itself to the level of other minor sports, where the interest is primarily on campus or friends and family. Sure, March Madness makes a lot of TV money because it's a reason to have parties and not watch most of the other crap on TV, but it's become really bad basketball.
