Staff and Roster Size Debate

To someone with knowledge of the infrastructure of our program, during practice, how many coaches/instructors can be working with the kids? If there are tricky headphone/megaphone gimmicks from a crows nest, please break that down too. The internet says anything from 10-11 coaches, 4 grad assistants, and 5 strength coaches. Anything else?

Some perspective to the question. We have discussed the 150 roster size, the lack of development, and 90 of those 150 sitting around most of the practice. It seems like we have enough fields/ practice space. We are addressing meeting space. Do we have enough coaches to take advantage of 150 players?

I've done quite a bit of coaching, and for the sake of guys needing a break between reps, and needing to buddy guys up to go against each other, I personally think if the player to coach ratio is 10/1 or less, it's got potential to be constructive.

Lastly, my opinion, I don't have a problem with the roster size. I think Sam Slege taking on Carrol Jackson, freshman 4th stringers, is still going to be a caliber of player they aren't used to seeing, and I think being coached by a S&C staffer who probably played in college is still going to help develop that kid and prepare him to climb the DC. Hopefully in year 1 vs year 5.

Thanks

Rosters Compiled - Nebraska vs Other Surrounding Area Schools

2022 Football Rosters

Total number of Players Listed per Team

Nebraska = 150
Ohio State = 117
Iowa = 120
Wisconsin = 106
KU = 112
KST = 118
Iowa State = 107
Oklahoma State = 127

To me, this seals the argument.

There’s no longer a need to have these large numbers anymore. Nobody else who’s any good has over 125-130.
Most good teams have under 120 even non traditionally good teams

Teams who didn’t used to be as good are better than we are now with lower numbers

Another thing people forget is one of the best walk on traditions used to be the I.M. Hipps Jarvis redwines , Jimmy Williams, etc the Pell Grants that’s no longer available and after that the prop 48 walk-on‘s. no longer

I don’t count those as true walk ons they aren’t the same as the rural less talented instate Nebraska walk on who has no D1 scholarships and walks on…The prop 48s weren’t just people who couldn’t go to better schools because of their athletic ability. It was usually restricted academically for them and that’s how Nebraska was able to add a bunch of good players. No longer the case.

Lastly, Nebraska roster sizes over the years

- 1970s and early 80s with freshman team 180-200 players

- Late 80s-90s TO cut roster to 150s after Frosh team was no longer

- 2002 - 1st non winning 7 loss season in modern Husker history = 170 180 ish on roster

- 2003 - 9 wins 150 on roster

- 2005-06 8 and 9 win seasons under callahan 120-130

- 2009-13 under BO 130-140 ish 9 plus win seasons

- 2014 - 2022 Riley and Frost basically had 150 plus all
losing seasons

So there absolutely no correlation to roster size and winning. It’s certainly proven you don’t need large roster size is today to win at a high-level most of the teams who are great have the lowest numbers.

It’s all about how good your quality 2 deep three deep and 4 deep are every year. that’s the focus to get the best players and get them on the field

which is what Osborne started to do the walkons became mostly irrelevant on defense and only really on offense due to the style blocking FBS and block first wide receivers but that all went away.

***New Commit*** BREAKING: Former Arizona State OL Ben Scott has committed to Nebraska

Former Arizona State OL Ben Scott has committed to Nebraska. Huge pickup for Donovan Raiola and the Huskers. Scott has two years of eligibility left and is likely a Day 1 starter at center.

Recruiting OT Ajani Cornelius: Final prediction for Nebraska's top transfer target

OT Ajani Cornelius, Nebraska's No. 1 target in the transfer portal who is one of the hottest national targets in the transfer portal, is announcing his decision at 5:30 p.m. CT today. The Rhode Island transfer is down to Nebraska, Ohio State, Oregon and Tennessee – all of which he took an OV to over the past two weeks with Nebraska getting the first visit.

I thought Ohio State was in a good position coming off of his OV to Columbus, but my final prediction is Cornelius will commit to Oregon. The Ducks were Cornelius' second OV following his trip to Nebraska, and my final call is Cornelius will go from one coast to the other: South Kingstown to Eugene.

NIL Think Tank

ok, so first let me first state, I have no fancy law degree, or business degree, or any kind of measurable intelligence in regards to the NIL concept whatsoever. However, after years of being a member of our beloved Husker family, I've realized one thing is for certain. We do have some folks with those measurables. No, im not being sarcastic. So it got me thinking, as we sit here, day after day, year after year, watching this "wild wild west" and CFB free agency run rampant and out of control, and you have coaches complaining left and right about tampering and lack of rules, etc right? Everyone just seems to shrug it off and throw their hands up and act all helpless, like "oh well, this is just the way it is, nothing we can do about it." Well maybe there is... So maybe someone one on these forums has an idea just brilliant enough to get the ball rolling. I have no clue, but you never know who is combing through these scrolls behind the scenes and may see a concept and take off running with it.

A few ideas...

1, Kids are still allowed to free use the portal still, however lets say, theyre not allowed to earn NIL until ONE full calendar year after being enrolled at current school. (May help curb the tampering aspect.)

2. Kids arent allowed to enter into any NIL deals until their sophomore year. (May curb the massive NIL money deals before even enrolling at a school.)

3. Perhaps make these legal adult student athletes sign contracts for these NIL collectives and add clauses into these NIL contracts stating "We'll pay you, but you have to stay at this school for X amount of years, (May curb the amount of companies getting burned by these kids just grabbing checks and then dipping out to another school because they were tampered with.)

So here are a few of my suggestions, take em or leave, like I said, I have no degree so I very well could just be talking out my keyster but perhaps one of you may have more beneficial ideas, so please feel free to share them. Perhaps these ideas are full of crap and maybe theyre not. Any I figured maybe we could have running thread of folks throwing out ideas and perhaps someone will have hit the nail right on the head and get the ball rolling to finally try and get some control of this beast which we've all loved for so long and desperately need to get control of, college athletics.

Feel free to share any ideas and hey maybe the key to saving college sports and controlling this NIL monster lies right within the mind of one of our brilliant Husker fans! GBR!

"Yea I got a daughter in the clinic, getting cured off the Wild Turkey. And the older boy, bless his soul, is preparing for his career."

Clark: "College?"

Cousin Eddie: "Carnival.

Clark: "You've got to be proud."

Eddie: “Oh, yeah. Yeah, last season he was a pixie-dust spreader on the Tilt-O-Whirl. He thinks that maybe next year, He’ll be guessing people’s weight or barking for the Yak woman. You ever see her?”

Clark: “No.”

Eddie: “She’s got these big horns growing right out above her ears. Yeah, she’s ugly as sin, but a sweet gal. And, a hell of a good cook.”
