Classic definition of Insanity

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. -Albert Einstein.

This oft used quote perfectly depicts the state of Nebraska Football since the firing of Frank Solich. Sure, we had some different offenses (WCO, Classic Spread, Whatever the crap Mike Riley was running, and Frost's Chip Kelly Oregon). Now we're running an offense that's literally undefinable. It's kind of a combination of spread and something that kind of looks like a running game. The bottom line is that this is essentially the same thing that we have done for 20 years, trying to run an offense that requires a top flight dual threat QB, something that we have failed to recruit for those 20 years.

Forget about the turnovers for a minute. Our offense is soft, tentative, and awkward. It's not strength on the OL. The DL seems to control the LOS and they lift in the same weight room as the OL. There is no aggressiveness in our offense, everyone is tentative. This is why our OL gets their asses kicked in the run game. I'll be honest, Sims had plenty of time to throw today, but we got NO push on the OL, none. This is where doing the same thing over and over again comes in. I was hopeful that the game day calling of the game would be improved under the new coaches, and while this looks to be the case on defense, the offense game day coaching is no better than under Frost, perhaps worse.

Now to Sims, Stevie Wonder could see that he just can't get it done. Aside from being a turnover machine, he can't read progressions and his judgement during plays (whether to throw or run) is indecisive at best. Take away the turnovers, and we may have given up about 10 points less, but we still would have a suck offense that can't sustain a drive and can't keep our decent defense off the field enough to allow them to finish the job. I had hoped that this great athlete could be coached up, but that's obviously not the case, problem is that we have NO other options. HH is not a legit D1 QB either, and Purdy can't even perform in practice.

Corcoran, Sims, Purdy, Benhart, and IGC, should leave after this year with the Seniors (Grant, Washington, Kemp, Fleeks, and Nouili). Gottula and Teddy need to be our starting OTs next season with a transfer at guard for Nouili. Teddy needs to replace Corcoran whenever he's healthy. We will have another transfer starting at QB next season, and we'll need to go with all of these current freshman next year at WR with maybe a transfer. There needs to be a pretty good flip on Offense.

But more than that, we can't keep running this stupid "modern" offense that doesn't work. We have to do something else that ATTACKS and doesn't CATCH. What we're doing now is BS.

With Sims, it's not as much about the turnovers as the reason for them.

Overthrow a WR

Get blindsided getting ready to throw

Get stripped or hit hard

Hidden coverage that fools the play call

Lots of things that you need to work on, but not as infuriating.

BUT.......

Throwing into triple coverage on the goal line right before halftime down 3-0. A junior high QB knows to throw the ball away unless someone is wide open.

Throwing the ball into triple coverage over the middle of the field on 2nd down from the 50 when the game is tied 10-10 with 2 minutes left. A junior high QB would know not to do that.

Throwing the ball on an out route into coverage at the end of the first half to a not wide open receiver. Trying to make an NFL throw when you're not an NFL QB. A junior high QB would know not to do that.

Dropping 2 shotgun snaps in one game and not getting on the ball but rather trying to pick the ball up as it's moving away from him. Same Junior high comment.

Running out of bounds to kill the clock so the other team can score.

Not moving the pocket when you can on any play where the primary receiver is covered. (this is a coaching problem).

None of Sims turnovers are because of great play by the defense. They are pure unforced errors. This is bigger than just the turnovers.

Football Big Ten announces Nebraska-Louisiana Tech kickoff time, TV info for Week 4

It's an afternoon game for the Huskers in Week 4 (2:30 p.m. CT on BTN)

Kickoff times and TV info now known for 7 of their final 10 games this season:

Big Ten West

I am admittedly an overly optimistic person, especially when it comes to Nebraska football, but I feel compelled to share my thoughts amidst all the negativity.

After the first two games, I see a team that has a solid chance to win the Big Ten West. This would most likely require us to run the table after the Michigan game. However, I believe every single one of those games is winnable if the defense continues to build on it's play and the offense cleans up the silly turnovers -- a task many consider daunting at this point. Our biggest challenge will probably be the road game to Wisconsin. If we run the table and assume a Michigan loss, we will be sitting at 7-2 in conference play.

Let's consider a hypothetical: We lose to Michigan but finish the season in the conference at 7-2. What would need to happen for us to win the West?

Minnesota
Loss - Ohio St
Loss - Michigan
Loss - to one of the following: Wisconsin, Iowa, other? This doesn't feel like a Minnesota team that can beat the rest of the west.

Wisconsin
Loss - Ohio St
Loss - Nebraska

Iowa
Loss - Penn St
Loss - Nebraska

I think it is unlikely Purdue or Illinois compete for it this year, but let's be honest, the division is so bad this year the winner could have 3 conference losses.

Again... this is just an optimistic view. I find it far more enjoyable to think about a positive version of the future, rather than a negative one. I honestly do not think our offensive woes are as insurmountable as many posters seem to think. There's still a lot to play for and I hope giving away the Minnesota game doesn't come back to haunt us at the end of the year.

Where's the Fullback?

Granted, I admit I have not seen every play in both games this year, but I was under the impression Rhule was planning on using a fullback to some degree.

How many actual plays has a fullback been in on? From what I've seen, only a couple but I could be wrong. Thought maybe we'd see some power running plays with the fullback as an extra blocker. Especially since our line is suspect anyway.

I know Satterfield used them as a hybrid TE/FB. But we really haven't seen much of that either.

Football Matt Rhule updates Jeff Sims ankle injury, status as Huskers' starting QB

An update with full quotes from Matt Rhule on Jeff Sims' status as Nebraska's starting QB, his ankle injury and where backups Heinrich Haarberg and Chubba Purdy stand.

"Jeff is our quarterback. But Jeff also has to protect the football.”

Big decision - Haarberg or Sims vs NIU?

To me, the decision is obvious. A change must be made. We have three years of film on Sims and there is no improvement in 2 games this year. He's not the future of the program. He's gone after this year.

So with that being said, let's see what we got with Haarberg. And if you're going to make a change, THIS is the week to do it. Let him grow against NIU and LA Tech.

If they say he's not ready my answer would be, "and Sims is?". The 49ers had Purdy on the bench because "he wasn't ready" but when they were forced to start him they discovered he actually was. Sometimes you unexpectedly strike gold.

This is NOT an endorsement on Haarberg. This is me advocating this is the best time to see what he has.

FPI win probability distribution after week 2

zCN64GX.png

After week 2, FPI gives us 19.9% probability of winning 6 games, down from 53.1%. Probability of winning increased significantly against no one. Probability of winning decreased significantly against La Tech, Michigan, Illinois, NW, Purdue, Michigan state, Maryland, and Iowa. The single most likely outcome is 4 wins. There is no hope. Fvck Everything. Go Big Red.
