Football The Checkdown: QB runs hurt Blackshirts, cat blitzes and more DL flashes

Here's this week's Checkdown:

>> QB runs were a weakness for the Husker defense
>> Cat blitzes gave Purdy trouble (for the most part)
>> More flashes from Husker D-linemen were fun to watch

Zack, what's up with your recent article Title? and why not posted where we can post comments? i'm confused.

so i read your article "Carpenter: Play to win the game? We'll find out as confusion, tension build"

um, i've got a couple questions. the first is, why isn't this posted so we can respond with comments in the thread section of Insiders. there is probably an obvious reason for that which just escapes me at the moment, but still i'm trying to figure that out.

You do a great job with your articles.
and, i'm not a fan of this title: " . . . as confusion, tension build"

with whom is confusion and tension building? the fans? the team? you? the fans, well, that's a perennial status so that's a given. so why point that out? you? well, like many of us, that is obvious because of the text of your article itself.

i would have expected, since that is such a charged add-on phrase at the end of your title ("as confusion, tension build"), that you would have pointed to some broader confusion and tension. beyond your own and that of many fans (obviously).

my concern is you used it as an 'attention grabber.' it is indeed charged language. the worst case is it insinuates - whether you intended or not - that there is tension on the team. because what other tension is even relevant. mine? yours? the fans? not really.

here's the thing, you chose to put forth a certain narrative: ~'we only have one game left to make a bowl and secure the extra practices we so desperately need. tension and confusion is building.'

let me offer an alternative title: ~"a lot of us fans (and even writers) are confused and getting tense, but HC Rhule stays the course with a steady hand on the rudder"

the the opening might have said: ~'In spite of the frustration with the way the last two games concluded, Matt Rhule knows what he is doing - what he is building. He's done it before, and he'll get it done here. The team has bought in to his system even with the last two frustrating losses. I expect a focused, bought-in, and victory-seeking team when Iowa comes to town.'
something of that ilk.

it's a different narrative for certain. but no less true than the one you put forth. guess i'm wondering why you chose the path you did, other than the typical journalist approach to dust up some controversial or fear-based narrative.

was not a fan of that title. the article was fine. you were frustrated and articulated that well.

i think we see a committed team this week. i think we see a victory. that's my narrative. Winking 😎
any way you slice it . . .

GBR!!!

Portal needs after 2023 season

I think Rhule added 10 scholarships from 4-year school guys this past off-season. @Steve Marik @Greg Smith @Zack Carpenter is that accurate?

So the question is, will he go after less, same/similar or way more?

Fan Support

The hardest thing that is happening with all these losses is the younger generation is fed up. My younger son said last night he’s just done with this. We haven’t been good for a number of seasons now. We always lose by 3-7 points now. 28 1 pt losses in the last 6 years . Games used to be an event, they are only painful now and no fun. We thought about going to a Iowa game, but not worth it at this point. Nothing is more difficult being a long time Husker fan and having your kids tell you they would rather go for someone else as Nebraska never gets any better. I will always be a Husker..but this program is still a disaster and I don’t see anything on the horizon. Northwestern with all they had happen, promoted DC to Head Coach and look at them? Bowl eligible. 1-11 to bowl eligibility. With a coach who wasn’t even hired to BE a Head Coach. This has to be the most damming stat against Nebraska. Anyway, long rant. But I fear Husker fans are fed up and the support will continue to go down. I feel like Friday’s game is more than a bowl game on the line... 5-7 will destroy any thing Rhule built this season.

A search firm recently called Matt Rhule asking about Tony White. Rhule gave a glowing review and handed over White's contact info.

The QB situation going forward.

Acouple of thoughts:

Obviously, we need to bring in an experienced QB from the portal. I see where Tyler Shough is transferring from Texas Tech as a grad transfer. Why not try to woo him to NU? Isn't McGuire's brother the HC at TT?
Slough si 6'5", 230, has a career completion record of 63% with 36 TDs and 17 INTs (with Oregon and TT . He also can run.

Move HH to WR or TE. With his speed and size, he would be very tough to cover at either position. He would also be more likely to be drafted at those positions rather than QB.

Special Teams

JFC. Someone tell this group that special teams doesn’t mean that our specialist need to be an extra chromosome special. All the griping about play calling on defense or offense, but our kicker and punter don’t do anyone any favors. Punts so bad that the punter is making all the tackles.

In a game of inches, our special teams lost us that game more than anything else.
