Tomorrow...

My wife and I will be going to Church and return home for a ham & bean soup we have been looking forward to since the ingredients were purchased. We will be thanking Jesus Christ for another day of life of being able to take care of ourselves at home. She has been invalid with MS since 2015. I fell and needed spinal surgery then had to learn how to walk again in 2020. Friday my Sister is coming from the city and our Daughter and Son in Law will be bringing their charming blue eyed daughter into our home again (she was here today while her Mother helped me get the house ready). We will be hoping that the Huskers lay waste on the Hawkeyes but that is not the reason we are coming together. Everyone have a blessed day of Thanksgiving.

Football Nebraska vs. Iowa final score predictions plus CFB Rivalry Week picks

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Here are our staff NEB-IOWA final scores + our Rivalry Week picks. I had one basic principle that I stuck to for most of my picks: Bet the underdog for the rivalry game. As good a strategy as any for me.

Turkey is brining

Who else started their Thanksgiving prep today? Going to spatchcock and smoke the bird on Thursday morning. SIL bought a monster, so want to expedite the cook time. Will remove from the brine tomorrow and let the skin dry out.

Currently warming up the smoker with a test run of pork belly burnt ends (need to change out the pellets for the turkey smoke) and warming my belly with an Eagle Rare old fashioned. Tis the season.

What Turkey Day recipes do you want to share with the board?

Football Iowa at Nebraska Previews from Iowa media

Iowa-Nebraska pick: A game about emotions, defense and Brock Purdy's brother
by Chad Leistikow, Hawk Central

For 25 years as Iowa's head coach, Kirk Ferentz has been a master at finding motivation for his team in almost any situation.

Get blown out on the road and come home to face a No. 2-ranked team? Hello, 14-13 upset of 2016 Michigan.

Get off to an 0-2 start with the program in turmoil and about to face a team that just beat Michigan? Hello, 49-7 onslaught against 2020 Michigan State.

Go into Ames against a top-10 opponent with ESPN's "College GameDay" on the scene? Hello, 27-17 domination of 2021 Iowa State.

But the situation Ferentz is about to face has been rare and is not in his comfort zone. How to take a Hawkeye team that has accomplished a major goal, then turn around the following week to go on the road in a game that means very little in the greater picture?

The majority of our Hawkeye text-group questions this week about Iowa's Black Friday matchup had to do with the Hawkeyes' motivation, with a Big Ten Championship Game berth clinched and no shot at a Rose Bowl or College Football Playoff bid. Obviously, if Iowa was to win one of the next two games, it'd take the Big Ten title trophy over the Heroes Trophy.

There is no scientific way to predict how Iowa plays Friday, but we can point to history. While not apples-to-apples, the 2015 trip to Nebraska had similar properties. Iowa was 11-0 and coming off a home win vs. Purdue that clinched the Big Ten West. Nebraska was 5-6 and under a first-year head coach in Mike Riley.

Iowa went into Lincoln that day and won, 28-20, despite being outgained in total yardage, 433-250. The Hawkeyes intercepted Tommy Armstrong four times, with Parker Hesse pulling one in for a touchdown and Josey Jewell's late pick sealing a 12-0 regular season.

Here we go again. The 5-6 Huskers, under new coach Matt Rhule and needing one win to clinch a bowl trip after a season full of close losses, should have plenty of motivation on their side. But a loss to Nebraska in this spot wouldn't spoil Iowa's season like it might have in 2015.

Let's get to the game-preview questions from readers.

Can Iowa shut down Purdy? (And haven't we asked this before?)

Ha! No, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback who posted a perfect rating Sunday isn’t starting for Nebraska. But Brock Purdy’s little brother is. Chubba Purdy, who has battled a groin injury this year, looked pretty good in getting the starting quarterback nod for the Huskers at Wisconsin. Purdy rushed for 105 yards and completed 15 of 23 passes for 169 yards in Madison but couldn’t hang on to a 14-0 lead and threw an overtime interception in a 24-17 loss.

Purdy has excellent scrambling and running ability, as he showed with an improvised 55-yard touchdown run Saturday. And he’s obviously got some positive QB DNA, considering Brock was a four-year starter at Iowa State (who Iowa beat in 2019 and 2021). And he’ll be playing at home.

“We’ve got to make sure we keep our eyes on the quarterback, keep him contained," Iowa cornerback Jermari Harris said. "Also, they do some things we haven’t seen in a while. It’s going to be an interesting battle. Just a lot of pro-style. Their coach comes from the NFL. I don’t think we’ve seen a quarterback as athletic. … He has ability.”

But to circle back to the original question, how will Iowa’s defense respond?

Well, with Cooper DeJean out for the year, the best way to attack the Hawkeyes is through the air. Jermari Harris played excellent in the No. 1 cornerback role, but Deshaun Lee was one of the lowest-graded performers for the Hawkeyes by Pro Football Focus in the 15-13 win over Illinois. Nebraska likely will try to test Lee. What the Hawkeyes cannot do is allow Purdy to beat them with his legs. The last time they faced a mobile quarterback, Rutgers’ Gavin Wimsatt did next to nothing. With linebackers Jay Higgins and Nick Jackson playing great and cash defender Sebastian Castro on the prowl, Iowa is well-positioned to contain that running-QB element. Jackson said Tuesday the player responsible for Purdy will change depending on the defensive call.

Brock Purdy was more of a drop-back passer, but Iowa did force him into three interceptions in 2021 at Iowa State … and even got him benched for Hunter Dekkers late in that game. Being physical with Brock early was key to that performance; let’s see if Iowa tries to lay a few hard hits on Chubba this Friday.

What can Iowa's offense do to take another positive step in preparation for the Big Ten title game?

This game is more about maintaining confidence with some emerging pieces – quarterback Deacon Hill, running back Kaleb Johnson and wide receiver Kaleb Brown in particular.

All three had important roles in Saturday’s win against Illinois. Brown had seven catches on 10 targets. One thing Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz can do is keep feeding Brown. Nebraska showed against Wisconsin that it will try to attack the run and make the opposing quarterback throw, and now Iowa at least has a developing playmaker in Brown to take pressure off the running game.

Nebraska has the No. 2-ranked rushing defense (behind Penn State, ahead of Michigan), and this factor is a big piece of the Rhule rebuild in Lincoln that’s centered on physical play. Iowa’s offensive-line health is a question mark Friday, but showing the potential to stick with the run and avoid negative plays (only one handoff went for negative yardage vs. Illinois) would be another step forward for the Hawkeye offense.

And by the way, Iowa has inched up to 245.4 yards per game this season. That is still by far last in FBS (Kent State is 132nd, at 261.7). The Hawkeyes’ historically low average last year was 251.6 yards per game. Iowa would need 322 yards Friday to jump past last year’s average.

Will Ferentz use this rare opportunity to do something unusual, such as a fake field goal, double-reverse pass, etc.?

A really interesting question that ties into our lead item about motivation. Will the game circumstances cause Iowa to play loose … and coach loose, too? I like the idea especially of Brian Ferentz, in his final year as offensive coordinator, throwing in some wrinkles that you know he has in the playbook. And no, I wouldn’t worry about burning through anything for the postseason. Have some fun with the situation and relish the opportunity.

That being said, Brian Ferentz has called some excellent games against the Huskers. That includes in 2017, in his first year as OC, when Iowa went into Lincoln and walked out with 505 yards of offense and a 56-14 victory. Then in 2019, he had a perfect reverse call in his pocket and pulled it out early to Ihmir Smith-Marsette for a 45-yard touchdown less than four minutes into Iowa’s 27-24 win. Nebraska was 5-6 that year, too, and needed a win for Scott Frost to go bowling … but Keith Duncan delivered a last-second field goal and blew a kiss to the Huskers sideline.

Maybe Brian Ferentz will have a blow-a-kiss type play call ready and waiting Friday. And LeVar Woods, a western Iowa product, is totally overdue to run a fake punt or field goal.

Chad Leistikow's Pick for Iowa vs. Nebraska

No. 16 Iowa (9-2, 6-2) at Nebraska (5-6, 3-5)

Where Iowa has the edge:
Nebraska is the fifth bottom-20 national offense that Iowa has faced this year; the previous four (Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Rutgers) totaled just 28 points (seven field goals, one touchdown) on offense. As usual, Tory Taylor is a major punting advantage (he averages 48.2 yards per boot; Nebraska averages 40.7)

Where Nebraska has the edge: The Cornhuskers allow just 2.83 yards per rush and own a home crowd that will be revved up by animosity toward Iowa and the goal of reaching six wins for the first time since 2016.

Prediction: Iowa 13, Nebraska 9
The Cornhuskers have lost three straight games in excruciating fashion and now face a team known for winning close games. The Huskers have fumbled 28 times (seriously) and lost 13 of them and thrown 15 interceptions. Iowa gets its minus-3 turnover margin back to even and rides its stellar defense to victory.

Iowa at Nebraska Game Preview and Prediction
by Pete Fiutak, CollegeFootballNews.com

Iowa (9-2) at Nebraska (5-6)
Friday, November 24 - 12:00 PM (ET) - CBS)

Why Iowa Will Win
Iowa knows what it's doing next Saturday. Michigan and Ohio State don't.

The Big Ten West champs -- deal with it, America -- are on a roll. They're one somewhat questionable call on a punt return against Minnesota away from being 10-1 with the only loss coming to Penn State.

And how?

The defense continues to be unbelievable.

Instead of the focus being on the putrid offense that can't keep things moving, give it up to a D that's allowing just 12 points per game, doesn't break when bends, and in a bizarre way, it's doing it all now without forcing a ton of turnovers.

Meanwhile, Nebraska's offense needed a last gasp score against Wisconsin just to get to 17 and overtime.

That makes it four times in the last five games -- and eight times in 11 -- that the team hasn't broken 20 points. And with that defeat in Camp Randall, Nebraska is now 0-4 this year and 2-15 over the last three seasons and 3-17 in the last 20 in games decided by seven points or fewer.

Iowa doesn't play as many one-score games as you might think.

The offense does just enough to get by, the defense has kept everyone but Penn State to fewer than 17 points, and it does it by just playing, letting the clock go -- but without worrying about time of possession -- and then, all of a sudden, it's the fourth quarter.

However, out of those three games played decided by seven points or fewer ......

Why Nebraska Will Win
.....Nebraska 24, Iowa 17.

The Huskers kept the Hawkeyes from going to the Big Ten Championship Game last year with one of 2022's most stunning wins.

How? It took a long touchdown pass and an offensive explosion on the way to a huge lead, and then the D hung on for dear life.

This time around the Huskers can play it straight. Few teams can speak Iowa's style like Nebraska.

The defense has been fantastic. It held Maryland in check, the run D allowed four yards per carry to Michigan and no one else, and it's able to force takeaways from time to time. Again, Iowa isn't forcing turnovers -- that's everything to Nebraska.

The Husker O has given it away 18 times in the last seven games. There isn't a penalty problem, the defensive front should live behind the Hawkeye line, and again, don't expect anything from the Iowa ground game to work.

What Will Happen
First score wins?

Iowa has bigger fish to fry next week, while Nebraska is one win away from going to a bowl game for the first time since 2016.

No program in America -- even those with national title aspirations -- has put more pressure on itself, especially being one win away from going bowling for over three weeks.

Shock of shocks, the two will play a tough, low-scoring battle, but Nebraska will -- I know, I've said this for three weeks -- will get to exhale in a cathartic Senior Day moment on a late touchdown after settling for a slew of early field goals.

Prediction
Nebraska 16, Iowa 13

Spread
Nebraska is favored at home by 2 points. The O/U is set at 26.5

Husker Soccer to Face #3 Stanford in Elite Eight

Huskers to Face #3 Stanford in Elite Eight
Huskers.com
The fifth-seeded Nebraska soccer team will face three-time national champion and 2-seed Stanford on Friday, with the winner advancing to the College Cup. First kick at the Laird Q. Cagan Stadium in Stanford is set for 4 p.m. (CT), and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.

The Huskers (17-3-3) are making their third quarterfinals appearance in school history and first since 1999 after NU punched its ticket to the Elite Eight with a convincing 4-0 shutout of UC Irvine on Sunday in front of 1,717 fans at Barbara Hibner Stadium. With a win on Friday, Nebraska will make its first trip to the College Cup in program history.

The Cardinal (18-0-4) has won two of the last six College Cups, most recently capturing the title in 2019. Stanford has appeared in 10 College Cups, including five straight from 2008-12, with its three national championships coming in 2011, 2017 and 2019.

Individual Milestones and Records to Watch
- Senior Eleanor Dale earned four Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors this season (second-most in Big Ten history), and she became the first Nebraska women's soccer player to claim Big Ten Forward of the Year honors. She leads the country in total goals (28), goals per game (1.22), and shots per game (6.00). Dale now ranks third in Big Ten history in single-season goals (28) and sixth in single-season points (61). Dale is just the fourth player in Big Ten history to total 60 points in a season.

- Eleanor Dale scored her nation-leading 27th and 28th goals in Friday's match to post her 11th multi-goal match of the season. With her 28 goals, Dale broke the Nebraska record for goals in a season with Kim Engesser, who previously held the record with 27 goals in 1998. Additionally, she is tied for first in the Huskers record books in game-winning goals and her total shots this season place her at the top of the list. Dale’s two goals increased her season total to 61 points. That ties Engesser’s school record for most points in a season, as Engesser tallied 61 points in 1998.

- Dale had 11 shots against UC Irvine, a school record for an NCAA Tournament match. The previous record had been 10 shots by Lindsay Eddleman against Minnesota in 1996.

- Gretna’s Weber joins Dale as a first-team All-Big Ten honoree as Weber captured her second-straight first-team All-Big Ten status. Nationally, Weber is ninth in shots per game (4.41), tied for eighth in total points (36) and tied for seventh with 15 goals.

- Junior midfielder Florence Belzile, a three-time member of the Top Drawer Soccer team, has a team-high 17 assists on the season, good for first in the conference and second nationally. In Big Ten history, she is currently tied for second-most in history only behind Jennifer Walek, Minnesota (1995) and Christie Walsh, Penn State (2001) who both had 18. In the Husker record books, her assists on the season place her tied for second with Husker great Jenny Benson (1999) and is four out of first (Brittany Timko, 2005).

Quick Notes
- Sunday's shutout victory over UC-Irvine was Nebraska's first in the NCAA Tournament since 2016, and was NU's 14th all-time shutout in 32 postseason matches

- The Huskers improved to 10-1-2 at Barbara Hibner Stadium this season, marking the first time NU has won 10 home matches in a season since 2001

- The Huskers won their 17th match of the season, their most wins since 2013

- Nebraska has scored 11 goals in its first three NCAA Tournament matches. The 11 goals are the most the Huskers have ever scored in a single NCAA Tournament, eclipsing the previous record of eight in both the 1998 and 2001 NCAA Tournaments.

- Nebraska has won two its three NCAA Tournament matches by multiple goals (5-2 over South Dakota State and 4-0 over UC Irvine). This marks only the second time in the Huskers’ 13 all-time NCAA Tournament matches that Nebraska has posted multiple victories by multiple goals (also two multi-goal victories in the 2001 NCAA Tournament).

- Nebraska and Stanford have met four times on the pitch, with the all-time series tied 2-2-0. The most recent meeting came in 2004 at home with the Cardinal winning 1-0

Nebraska's NCAA Tournament History

- Nebraska is making its 13th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, and first since 2016 when the Huskers hosted South Dakota State in the first round

- Nebraska holds a 20-12 record all-time in the NCAA Tournament

- Nebraska has made it to the Sweet 16 on eight occasions and three times have advanced to the Elite Eight

- Nebraska made its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1996, which began a span of 10 consecutive appearances through the 2005 season. NU's 12th appearance was in 2016.

Chuba Purdy is the REAL deal at QB

1) The 59 yard TD run ... that was Taylor Martinez type "plant & go" top end speed when he saw the man coverage and play flow leaving a 1st - 2nd base size hole between he and the sticks ... he was on those defenders so fast they couldn't even break off their coverage routes and get a SINGLE finger on him - as he split diagnol & again showed that home run speed that tantalizes OCs and TERRIFIES DCs

2) His willingness to stick in the pocket & keep eyes downfield - even when I thought Satterfield put him in VERY tough spots to do so - such as near our own zone first half 3rd and LONG & Purdy stands in, throws a prayer up fade to the WR#1 and takes a hit at his knees to get a flag - that type of stuff can mess with a dude forever but he seems tough - still Satt, with our OTs, the continued lack of TE chipping & RB assistance in blocking game are maddening

3) The throw to Malachi Coleman before the half - that was an NFL throw & an NFL catch - Coleman extended his entire 7'0+ wing span after hitting top speed on the deep angle in - Purdy let it RIP as hard as he could to that spot where Coleman was told "GET TO" and Purdy was told "rip it too..." that was an NFL concept all the way and a sign of just how dynamic the young offense is going forward, especially when you consider ...

4) Purdy threw a ROCKET LAUCHED BULLSYE to Lloyd in 1Q on a route concept that again shocked me given the down & distance ... but Rhule has said multiple times, "you don't learn to win by playing not to lose ..." (where was that mindset late game though coach and in OT? I think we'll see that VERY much addressed as Rhule is not the type to watch wins get eaten by kicking / time management woes - BUT, it was clear Satt/Rhule did not quite trust the kicking game nor the QB/OL combination in either direction to let us play to properly max out the win % ... Alvano gotta make 40 yarders tho )
