My thoughts on the season, 90% chance of being wrong.

My thoughts on the season according to what Rhule has said about the team are further along than what he inherited at Baylor and Temple. Plus, the team is being challenged in ways they never were with Frost and Riley as far as competition is concerned in everything they do. I have noticed that there are no activities that do not emphasize competition and camaraderie, two things that jumped off the page when things got tough in the past. The Matt drills are a prime example of this. The team is also talking about the dynamics of the camaraderie and how everything is a nonstop competition with Rhule.

I think the offensive line is going to have a breakout season and be a force to be reckoned with. For the past several seasons the offense has been a nightmare with zero vision and zero focus on any type of plan; it has been more sandlot football depending on AM2 and the long ball. Whipple was a flat-out egotistical nightmare and should have been fired with Frost. With a proper game plan, communicating what is expected, and some accountability from the staff, there will be a fire lit on these guys. For once in 5 years, players will be benched for poor performance.

This is probably my age, rose-colored glasses, eternal optimism, and a fresh batch of Kool-aide for the new year, here is my prediction for the season. I think there is some talent on this team that with proper coaching is going to shine.

Thu, Aug 31
@ Minnesota 8:00 PM Win-Last year the Whip handed the game to them when he stopped running the ball. This staff will have an advantage with an unknown offense and defense. A lot of new players on their offense that need to be proven. I think NU by 10+
Sat, Sep 9
@ Colorado 12:00 PM Win. NU will control the clock and the defense will have a great game. Too many new faces for the Buffs to gel in time to be cohesive.
Sat, Sep 16
vs Northern Illinois 7:00 PM Win.
Sat, Sep 23
vs Louisiana Tech Win
Sat, Sep 30
vs (2) Michigan Loss, but a learning game for the team and the staff. It will be closer than the score reflects. Mich by 10+
Fri, Oct 6
@ Illinois 8:00 PM Win This will be a battle in the trenches and the lessons learned the week before will help. Won’t be settled until late in the fourth Q. But they could be too beat up from the previous week and Bielema can coach. Pivotal game
Bye Week Needed after two weeks in a row of a fight in a phone booth.
Sat, Oct 21
vs Northwestern Win- shouldn’t be close, but hey, it always is…
Sat, Oct 28
vs Purdue Should be a Win, new QB and staff but later in the season. The defense should have a good game and cause chaos.
Sat, Nov 4
@ Michigan St. Win There could be a new staff if this team implodes like it has the previous two seasons.
Sat, Nov 11
vs Maryland Toss-up. If Maryland is near what they were last year, could be bad news for the skers… Win
Sat, Nov 18
@ Wisconsin Toss-up- If the offense is what I think it will be and similar to what Cincy’s was with a lot of short passes, I like NU. If it is what Bielema ran while there, could be a long game. The defense might be out of gas on the line and unable to stop the endless thumping of the offensive line. Wiscy
Fri, Nov 24
vs Iowa Win. Iowa sucks!

Best case
5-1 at the break, finish 5-1 10-2
Expected
5-1 at the break, finish 4-2 9-3
Worst
4-2 at the break, finish 3-3 7-5

"Troubling Allegations of Toxic Culture Under P.J. Fleck"

"They described an environment fraught with intimidation and toxicity and referenced the “Fleck Bank” — a system that allowed players with enough “coins” to get away with positive drug tests, and other violations of team rules.

Unprompted, the term “cult” was used by multiple former players and former staff members to describe Fleck’s “Row the Boat” culture spelled out in the so-called “Fleck Book” that players are given when they join the team."

There is some bizarre stuff in here haha. What a loser.

BRINGING BACK THE OPTION

Rhule has made it clear that he's planning on beefing up the linemen, running the ball first, and bringing back the FB position. We have a running QB now in Jeff Sims, and we have a stable of solid to fantastic RB's behind him.

I will not be surprised if Rhule busts out the option for 5-10-15 plays against Minnesota, especially early.

A team we're supposed to lose to - on the road - would have zero tape and preparedness for such an attack.

The OPTION would give him plenty of them...and put Minnesota's D on their heels.

It also would be good to school the team on how to run the option with backup QB's like we have who simply cannot throw. Haarburg might be stellar at it. And it would also - albeit artificially - give us more comfort with our depth at QB.

Because I don't know about the rest of you - but I'm simply afraid to have Chubba throw one more pass for NU in a critical moment in a game - ever. Same for Haarburg, although he might not suck as badly at it as Purdy has.

And let's face it: using the option would endear Rhule to older fans and send a signal to league DC's that they will have to prepare for the option or it they will pay.

OT: attended a pre-screening of the movie Oppenheimer…

last week. Couldn’t recommend it more.

So well cast and filmed. Absolutely fascinating to a history buff like myself... Compelling to see the moral struggles the scientists end officials faced, and the fact they couldn’t say with 100% certainty that when they tested the first bomb, it wouldn’t ignite the entire atmosphere and annihilate the planet.

Amazing what this country is capable of when all it might, and resources are put towards one ultimate goal. Believe it sort of mirrors, what’s going to happen in the next decade regarding military use of artificial intelligence.

Revisiting the greatness that is the 09 defense

For my money, it's probably the best non-championship season defense Nebraska has ever had, and that's saying something. Look at the starters. Is there a single one you wouldn't take on any team of the past 5 years or so?

Barry Turner
Ndamukong Suh
Jared Crick
Pierre Allen
Phillip Dillard
Will Compton
Sean Fisher
Prince Amukamara
Larry Asante
Matt O'Hanlon
Alfonzo Dennard

What a group. Callahan's final gift to Nebraska was recruiting this incredible defense.
