Huskers Finish Season in Knoxville

A few inches was the deciding factor in the No. 19 Nebraska softball team’s 1-0 loss to the No. 7 Tennessee Volunteers in the championship game of the NCAA Super Regional on Sunday afternoon in Knoxville, Tenn.

Ella Dodge knocked a solo home run in the bottom of the first that hit the top of the outfield wall and ricocheted over the fence in center field. That was the only score of the deciding game that sent the Vols to the Women’s College World Series.

The Huskers ended the season with a 43-15 (.741) record, good for the team’s best winning percentage since it went 44-12 (.785) in 2006. Nebraska and Tennessee split the four games between the teams this season, but the final two victories went to the Lady Vols, each by one run.

In a battle of first-team All-Americans, Jordyn Bahl (26-8) took the loss in the circle for the Huskers, despite pitching a complete game with only one run and four hits allowed. Karlyn Pickens (24-9) picked up her second win of the weekend.

Ava Kuszak and Hannah Camenzind notched the Big Red’s only two hits of the day.

Tennessee opened up the scoring with Dodge's solo home run in the bottom of the first.

NU mounted its best scoring threat with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, but could not convert a run.

OK, technically, it's slightly more than 25% because the SDSU game was canceled. But there are 14 games left in the regular season. Can this team still make it a successful season? I think we can all agree the only way to do so is to make a regional. That shouldn't be a high bar for a team that started the year in the top 25. There are two paths:

1. Win the conference tournament. The new, 12-team format should make it even more of a home field advantage for Nebraska because the game times will be set in advance at the start of the week. And, if the Big Ten is smart, it will schedule Nebraska's two midweek games in the evening to maximize attendance. Qualifying for the tournament is a prerequisite to winning it, however, and there is work to be done with the current position a three-way tie for 12th. Winning every remaining series 2-1 (or averaging out to that) will put the final record at 15-15 which should comfortably make the field. Anything better than that is gravy. All remaining Big Ten opponents are currently 10th or worse in the standings, and the two road series are against the 15th and 16th place teams. Not making the tournament would be huge failure.

2. Go on a serious tear and get an at-large bid. I'm no RPI expert but I think it's possible. A sub-50 RPI would probably be required, which means improving it 30-ish points over five weeks. The schedule sets up OK for it. The two series against the worst RPI teams remaining, Maryland and Purdue (both 140+), are on the road. All other games are at home against teams with 40-80 RPIs. Pulling it off will probably require winning 11+ of the 14--including beating K-State--and then winning 2-3 games in Omaha. But it might just be enough.

It starts tomorrow. Winning the Terps series is critical.

Huskers Down Tennessee in Game One of Super Regionals

The No. 19 Nebraska softball team took advantage of two Tennessee errors as part of a three-run fourth inning and downed the No. 7 Volunteers, 5-2, on Friday night at the NCAA Super Regionals in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Huskers moved to 43-13 on the season and moved within one win of their eighth all-time Women’s College World Series by taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three super regional. Samantha Bland, Hannah Camenzind and Olivia DiNardo recorded a hit and an RBI apiece and Jordyn Bahl added a hit and scored twice. Camenzind’s hit was a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning.

Bahl (26-6) grabbed the victory in the circle after pitching a complete game with seven hits, two earned runs and six strikeouts. Karlyn Pickens (22-9) took the loss for Tennessee.

Bahl opened the game with a single through the left side, then stole second base and went home on a DiNardo RBI single to make the score 1-0.

Tennessee tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on a Sophia Nugent home run.

In the top of the third, Bahl walked and went home on a Bland double, and NU grabbed the lead back at 2-1.

H. Camenzind opened the top of the fourth with a solo home run before Bacon was hit by a pitch. She advanced to second on a wild pitch before Lauren Camenzind walked. Bahl reached on an error, which also scored Bacon. L. Camenzind crossed the plate on another error and the Big Red led 5-1 going into the fourth.

Tennessee brought the score to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth on a single and a wild pitch. But that would be the final scoring of the game.
