Basketball Without Sam Griesel, Nebraska falls on the road at No. 14 Indiana

Tough night in Bloomington for the Sam Griesel-less Huskers, who lost by 16 points to No. 14 Indiana on Wednesday night.

"If we would’ve played the first five minutes of that game like we did the first five minutes of the second half, I think we would’ve had a chance.”

Volleyball Three things to watch between No. 2 Nebraska and No. 3 Oregon

We’re only a couple hours away from Nebraska taking on Oregon in the Sweet 16 here in downtown Louisville. From two elite units to the pass-serve battle, I listed a few things to watch between the Huskers and Ducks.

Football Wing Wednesdays and NASCAR: How Matt Rhule became right fit for Nebraska

I wanted to know about the Huskers new head coach Matt Rhule. I was curious to what led to his success at Baylor and the answers I found made me hopeful for the future of Nebraska. With half a dozen sources in this story, I hope you take the time to read through all of it, because trust me, it's worth it. Enjoy.

Tip of the cap to the players staying loyal

In this crazy whirlwind portal era, amongst the turmoil of coaching changes and losing seasons, we often focus on the guys jumping ship.

But I’d like to give a nod to the fellas remaining steadfast who want to see finished what they came here to do. Those who understand what commitment means. We’ve got some high character players that deserve a ton of respect for grinding it out during tough times.

Those high character unbreakable types need to be the bedrock and foundation to build something new.
Some quit, some say ‘never quit.’
Here’s to hoping they get rewarded for their loyalty.

Basketball ***FINAL: No. 14 Indiana 81, Nebraska 65

The Huskers are in Bloomington, Indiana, to take on the No. 14-ranked Hoosiers. Tip is slated for 7:30 p.m. and it will be shown on Big Ten Network.

Some major news prior to tip: starting point guard Sam Griesel will not play tonight as he's out with an illness.

Expect Emmanuel Bandoumel to handle the ball much more than normal. Keisei Tominaga may need to play more. Will we see some minutes from freshman guard Jamarques Lawrence? Should be interesting.

Here's some pregame reading:

Former Osborne player says Mike Riley is...........

I ran into Toby Wright last night. He played rover (safety) for the Huskers in the early 90's.
The Rams picked him in the 2nd round of the 94 draft. He noticed my Nebraska shirt and started a discussion with me. He was very friendly and personable. He talked with me for about 20 minutes. We discussed several topics. Callahan personally kicked Toby, Neil Smith and about 10 other former Husker greats out of the locker room before one of the games. He also gave them seats in the student section. (Great for the students but not so great for guys who should be allowed on the sideline. )

He thought Pelini did well early on but his rah rah act wore thin after a while and some of the kids stopped buying in. You could see how they would quit when adversity struck.

He also mentioned how Tom Osborne was always there for him even after his NFL career was over. He says Osborne saved his life when he was retiring. He met with him and talked with him about finances and future plans and put him on the right path. I forget which famous person he compared to Osborne but it was very complimentary. Lincoln or Jesus or someone else that is revered. (I know it's strange that I can't remember who he referenced.)

As for Mike Riley, Toby couldn't have been more excited about him. He compared him to Tom Osborne. He was thrilled that his former teammate, John Parrella, is now coaching with the Huskers. He said that he was very impressed with what Riley was able to do at a place like Oregon State, and that he was sure he would be bringing the Huskers back to our rightful place amongst the college football elite. He mentioned a few great coaches like Saban and others but said that we hired the "right" guy.

I totally agree with him. We hired the right guy. I hope we have a great season this year. If not, I hope we give Mike and his professional staff the time he needs to right the ship. They will get the job done.

Optimism for Rhule is Warranted

What stands out to me most about Rhule’s hire is that we finally had an AD study what led to success in the Big 10, work with inside knowledge of what made us successful before, and then go find a guy who could fulfill those visions. It is our first merit-based, top choice hire who wants to restore our identity. Contrast that to the visionless, identity-less, reactionary past changes with ADs:

Solich: Recruiting is mediocre. Get an NFL guy and sell that!

Callahan: The defense sucks and is wimpy! Bring in a hard ass defense guy!

Pelini: My god! He is crazy and no one likes him! Get a nice guy!

Riley: My god! What have we done?! He just sucks! We need a Nebraska guy!

Frost: Well…that was a disaster! Let’s double down! He’s a Nebraska guy!

Frost (again): Shit! He still sucks! What now?

Enter Rhule. He and Trev obviously want to reestablish our identity and line of scrimmage dominance. He is excellent at finding and developing players. He is second to none at establishing relationships with high school coaches, which helps both scouting and recruiting. Players love his family-like atmospheres and speak highly of him. He develops and utilizes walk ons. He adapts his offenses to the players he has.

We are finally returning to our identity. The old Nebraska was actually what was suited for the Big 10, not all the fake identities we have tried to assume since then.

I know everyone is beaten down by the misery of the last two decades. However, I think Rhule was just what we needed, and optimism is warranted.

Ranking the Husker Message Boards..

1. Inside Nebraska - the content here has elevated this board to #1. I kind of feel slighted over the years. You guys work really hard and provide some exceptional content.

2. The Platinum Board- fantastic board for rumors and nudity. But too many morons from the 24/7 site have tarnished that boards greatness.

3. On3 - Message board cost has allowed a lot of poors to show up and downgrade the posting quality. On3 reporting pales to this board and 24/7.

4. 24/7 - I really respect Christopherson and the staff there. Schafer is entertaining, but doesn't know shit. The biggest issue is that message board. They have some serious po-tay-toes over there who I feel like couldn't handle it over here where we mocked their stupidity.

One common thread among all these message boards:

The worst of our fanbase wouldn't be on display if Nebraska football didn't suck balls.
