Oh boy, Hal Daub wants 3 players off the team (UPDATE with Pres. Bounds comments: page 2, post 52)

If these 3 players are removed from the team I promise you I will not renew my 4 tickets and will protest every home game.I stand for the National Anthem in memory to those who gave their life for this country, but that is how I roll to each their own.
amen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Daub needs to shut his mouth before this escalates into another Mizzou situation. It's only a matter of time before BLM invades campus and demands his resignation, and causes our enrollment to plummet.

Well... if BLM comes on campus, maybe they can actually HAVE their "hands up" instead of out....is a Movement founded on a lie really a Movement?

All it does is marginalize an issue that may exist to some extent.

The shit storm. Wasn't sure exactly what path it would take, or who the figures were going to be, but the final score was a gimme. Fans are spilt, and regardless of the player quotes you've read you know some of them are pissed, IE-spilt. What a crappy situation.
Crappy for whom? You? Please clarify.

You should know by now that litespeedhuskerfan is a drama queen and lives off of negativity with this program. He is doing everything he can to encourage this causing trouble, just like he constantly believes that the program is headed for disaster. Predicting doom and gloom for the program is what he lives off of. He's going to be so disappointed when this turns out to be nothing.

I may not agree with what they're doing or trying to stand up for but these guys are exercising their rights to do so. Never should you be punished for your rights.

If I was asked for the definition of smarmy, sleazeball politician, Daub would be high on the list. I'm not a fan of these demonstrations, but if the opposition keeps trotting out scum like Daub, I might change sides. What a pathetic excuse for a Regent and that's not saying much.

He's just given Deadspin and who knows how many other outlets the ability to twist and create new narratives that paint the state and program in a horrible light. In other words, he has created a completely new distraction for this team right as momentum was ramping up in the right way.

Daub is a fool. Athletes are doing this all over America.
I support MRI and those like him. Not just their free speech rights, but also their cause. If I were African American I would kneel too. To say this is just showboating or grandstanding just displays an ignorant white suburban point of view. Go live in our large urban centers as a poor black male. Then come back and bitch
LISTEN WHITE BOYS; WE HAVE RIGHTS TOO : WE ARE A PART OF THE U.S. / I UNDERSTAND THE UPSET; but I'm old enough that I crossed the line and stood with younger black teammates who were physically threatened by older whites. WE tied up with the older whites and it helped I knew a few, but it was a scrum..... You are no man at all if you don't stand up - I understand forums and they are young - most soldiers are also. I would rather it be done a different way; but I have to say if I were that age, I feel I would have gone over and locked arms with them. As ornery as so many are here ( assuming most white, you probably would have to be restrained and taught to protest peacefully - me too, lol ). Skin color can't be one ten thousandth of our DNA; this crap should end its ignorant. My sons all serve or have served; they are at risk, but they have a duty - to serve and PROTECT !!! We are not at the level we need to be, so as Americans we explore options to get it too where it matches our ideals. Blessings on all; for all the anger and opinions; I am sure most come at this from love of country. I am a whitey and a mutt; My grandfathers family is about a third hispanic - proudly and one of my great joys in life is the love and times with them. I would expect my great grandkids, will be maybe half white; mutts like me and joyous americans. ......
I guess being separated by two oceans, we can take some time to be crazy.

Outstanding response by Mr. Bounds.

** UPDATE with President Bounds **

http://journalstar.com/sports/huske...al&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=user-share

University of Nebraska President Hank Bounds said he "completely opposes" imposing any actions against the players or changing any policies that would restrict their ability to express themselves.
This really should be the end of it. There is no way these players are going to be kicked off the team-Regents Chairman Kent Schroeder says any such proposal "will not see the light of day."

I understand why these athletes are doing what they are doing, but just hate the means they are using to do it. As far as Daub's statements, I think he is an idiot. I have always thought he is an idiot. Don't colleges encourage these young men and women to think for themselves, form your own opinions and express yourself? If so, then doing what Daub wants goes against that.

This quote from Daub is a gem: "Those publicity seeking athletes ought to rethink the forum in which they chose to issue their personal views at the expense of everyone else."

If Daub is a career politician, then this misstep should be his retirement (death) knell. He has traded the potential health of the football program, which is basically the identity of the university at this point not to mention a huge money maker, for the satisfaction of seeing his name in the newspaper.

I see Mr. Daub is around 75 years old, and so maybe he hasn't gotten the memo that the internet can now crush you (just ask Hillary) and even entities as large as a university (just ask Missouri, Penn State, Baylor, etc.) with ease.

Step down, Daub! Your usefulness has run out.

There are multiple issues. But right now the core of it is a feeling in the African American communities that police use excessive force and are trigger happy when dealing with black males. They feel there is a lot of racial profiling by the police. And they are totally correct.

My father was in the Korean War and got shot to hell and back. He still has the scars. My great uncle died in WWII. My brother is a cop. So I understand how some are upset by these protests.

But we need to remember something. Unless you want the National Anthem and the flag to merely represent war and service in war, then you better start realizing that all this BS about how guys like MRI are disrespecting vets is just that ... BS. These guys are not protesting against vets. And the national anthem and the flag are for ALL of us, not just vets. The anthem is our NATIONAL anthem, and not just an ode to war heroes. That anthem belongs just as much to MRI and all of us as it does to vets. And if he chooses to take a knee in order to bring attention to how our nation continues to fail to live up to the ideals the anthem represents then that is his constitutionally privileged right. And I applaud him.

What we need in this discussion is a little less jingoistic tossing of apple pies and "the anthem is for vets alone" nonsense, and a little more understanding of the deep, deep social problems this debate is about.

The team is the best we've had in 10+ years. Our recruiting hasn't been at this level in years, and we got a coaching staff that people are finally beginning to see and appreciate. NU is on the edge of being "relevant" on a national stage again, and it could happen this season. But, some can't leave well enough alone...A dippy regent and his pal the crooked governor decided they need to politicize something that was a non-issue, handled beautifully by Riley and Eichorst...Hal Daub and Crooked Pete need to go play in traffic.

It could have been so simple, and left at face value.

Why did they even have to open their mouths, other than to slide in with political motivations?

Hal Daub was loved by many Husker fans as he was one of three Regents that didn't want Pelini around. I'm curios if some that are calling for Daub's head as a "no good nothing" were singing his praises a short 20 months ago.

President Bounds & Chancellor Schroeder, kudos. Thanks @Truehuskerfan for sharing Schroeder's comments! Also, if anyone has the statement from coach Riley, in response to Hal Daub, please post it. Awesome response by coach Riley too!

Here's Riley statement from tonight:
Nebraska football coach Mike Riley said Tuesday night that Gov. Pete Rickets and University of Nebraska regent Hal Daub — elected officials who have been vocal critics of three Husker players kneeling during the national anthem — are entitled to their opinion, but he's comfortable with how he's handled the situation.

"I'm certain of how we're handling it," Riley said of allowing Michael Rose-Ivey, Mohamed Barry and DaiShon Neal to kneel during the national anthem last Saturday in protest of police violence against black Americans. Riley said he'd had discussions with athletic director Shawn Eichorst that affirmed his confidence. "It's exactly what we talked about: Everybody can have an opinion. They're entitled to it. I'm not surprised."

When asked if he was disappointed that Ricketts and Daub had criticized the players without talking to them or Riley first, the coach said "I actually do think if they talked to to the players they would have a real good idea."

Would Riley invite such a dialogue?

"That would be totally up to the players," Riley said. "They took an opportunity with a situation to make a point. Which I respect. Within the confines of our team, it was well-respected by our team, and I love that. And all these guys are just beautiful guys who are really thoughtful. When they did that, there was a ton of thought that went into it. I really, truly believe there are tons of opinions across this country about something like this. And I'm not going to worry about that. I have a firm belief about what I think is right and wrong. What other people say, they're certainly entitled to say. I have respect for the fact that they can say it."

Daub told the World-Herald he was "not pleased" with Riley's response to the situation. Riley was aware of Daub's comments prior to the interview.

"He's entitled to to say that," Riley said. "I have complete confidence in what I believe in and how I handled it within this team. It was the right thing to do — because it's their right."

God dang it, what's the matter with you?! Could it be any more obvious?! The "cause" is to make people talk about how racism is bad and cops assaulting and/or killing innocent people is bad. Nobody knew these things were bad until athletes started refusing to stand for the anthem.

If only more people could passive-aggressively complain about things that suck...then stuff would get done around here!

The other day my wife was complaining about the NFL players that kneel during the anthem instead of standing and paying proper tribute. I pointed out that I found it a little ironic that she was grumbling about them kneeling while we were both sitting on our butts talking to each other while the anthem was being sung. I learned that apparently it only matters if you are there, but if you are at home and no one sees you then you can do what you want while the anthem plays and it's no longer disrespectful to those who have/are serving. She found no humor in the situation.

Ha, we can't even get that sexual deviant who filmed his own porn on a government computer to resign.
good.grief. I guess it shouldn't be a surprise anymore...and people are going nuts about kids protesting - peacefully.

Get serious. That is not the issue. Of course we already knew racism and killing the innocent is bad. Just like we knew Jim Crow laws were wrong but did nothing about them until MLK started his protests.

Your sarcastic post shows you don't understand at all the source of the anger and frustration. And that source, ironically, is precisely what you point out: even though EVERYBODY (apparently) knows that racism and excessive police force are bad, IT KEEPS happening. Oh sure, it makes the news for about 48 hours and everyone talks about how awful it is, then the ratings greedy media move on back to Brangelina, the Kardashians and who gets to piss where in North Carolina. And nothing changes. Nothing.

These latest protests are the result of decades of frustration over indifference to the injustices committed by police. And if you want to belittle that frustration with sarcasm then go ahead. You will join a long line of people who have come before you.

A week or two ago, I refused to watch NFL games because of the protest movement during the national anthem. After seeing it now showing up in college football I guess I just don't care anymore. I will just ignore them as I don't believe in their method of protest.

Nope. Swing and a miss. I know the "source of the anger and frustration." Being proactive and DOING something about the issues at hand is admirable. Get your hands dirty, MRI. Get into the local schools. Start a youth group. Talk to legislators. Run for office. Get into law enforcement yourself. SOMETHIING...ANYTHING. Taking a knee and essentially saying "Somebody needs to do something about this!" with your actions is worthless, and just draws attention to yourself. And unless he's not very smart, he knew that going in.

1. Often times, if you understand the history and development of social movements, big movements start with small gestures. Rosa Parks just decided one day to sit in the front of a stupid bus. MLK chose to eat in a white's only part of a diner. Just look at the shitstorm that came down on the SF QB who started this. Now it is spreading. Look at this thread and countless others like it across America. The gesture of kneeling during the anthem is, therefore, demonstrably NOT worthless as you claim. These athletes know they are high profile. Thus, they know small gestures like this are very public and CAN effect change.
2. The reason why such seemingly small gestures are useful is that they are things average people with busy schedules can do. Once again, MLK understood this and he encouraged all kinds of small gestures. He knew that we all can't do everything. MRI is a full time student and a football player. He has a full plate. He decided this was a small thing he could do. But according to you it is just pointless showboating unless he is out there starting his own youth league or something.
3. Yes, such gestures draw attention. That is the point. But who are you to judge what his motives are? Do you have privileged access to his internal mind? How do you know this wasn't an act of conscience rather than a grab for the spotlight as you suggest? Seriously, I would like to know: how do you know his motives? I doubt you even know his favorite color let alone how the deep recesses of his moral conscience operate.
4. Fortunately, white boys writing on football chat boards anonymously don't get to choose for the African American community the preferred and safe manner for effecting social change.

You also are misunderstanding these gestures in comparing them to things like starting a youth league. The latter is a method for social change by working within the status quo. But what civil rights people also understand is that there is a time for more disruptive peaceful protest that precisely violates standard sensibilities (oh our poor vets!) in order to effect change. Sure Rosa Parks could have started the "front of the bus lady's guild" and started "raising awareness" and so on. Or...she could just go and sit in the front of that damn bus.

Seems like he's trying to do something...

Yup. I'm not accusing anyone here of this, but it seems that people want protests that are easy to ignore.
