Football Quick hits from Nebraska OC Mark Whipple ahead of Minnesota

Mark Whipple met with the media on Wednesday ahead of the matchup with Minnesota. Obviously, the bulk of the conversation was about the Huskers' QB situation going into Saturday.

>> Casey Thompson hasn't been ruled out officially but it's very unlikely he plays.

>> On Chubba Purdy: “I told him I believe in you, everybody on this team believes in you. There's a really good chance you’re gonna be the starter. … One game doesn’t make a career.”

>> On Logan Smothers: “Yesterday and today is the best he’s looked since I’ve been here."

Thoughts on Mickey’s purple suit?

What were your thoughts on Mickey wearing a purple suit with gold tie for the unity walk? I wasn’t sure if he thought it was LSU or if he was going for a pimp look from Mangoulsen’s. Maybe dumb and dumber? I’m sure Trev would prefer his head coach wear school colors to a big even such as a home football game.

I can imagine TO wearing a fur coat with snake skin boots and a pimp hat

you know what they say “dress for the job you want (lsu) not the one you have”

Why I’m off the Mickey train

Unless there is an injury Im not aware of….

It isnt because we lost, I though we’d lose. It is because we kept playing purdy even though he is HORRIBLE. He is so bad. When he couldnt even throw a five yard dump pass correctly it was obvious smothers should have been playing. They even tried qb runs with purdy and Im thinking….why? Just put smothers in and wildcat that stuff.

This means 1 of 3 things.

1) Mickey couldnt see it.
2) Mickey doesnt want the decision regarding qb
3) Micky doesnt want to be the boss of whip

Any of the above three are inexcusible for a HEAD COACH. You are the head coach, act like it. Sometimes that means telling your coordinators to put a different qb in and try something else when its obviously failing. If you are too scared to do that, or that far removed from xs and os, you aint ready for the job.

I still like Mickey a lot as a person and as a coach in general, but its time to move a different direction with some experience. Yes he should get some credit for the wins, but that might be more reflective of just how bad frost was.

Could I get back on? Maybe, but probably not.

(Id still take him over bill obrien tho)

Sunday, November 27th

There will be a press conference scheduled around 11 am that morning announcing ------------- as the next Head Coach of the University of Nebraska.

Odds on the name:

Mark Stoops - 2 to 1
Dave Aranda - 3 to 1
Bill O'Brien - 4 to 1
Dave Doeren - 7 to 1
PJ Fleck - 10 to 1
Kalen DeBoer - 12 to 1
Matt Campbell - 18 to 1 (I believe he was the early favorite, but he's having such a miserable season that he's out of the running)
Lane Kiffin - 25 to 1
Urban Meyer - 100 to 1

Timing on Hiring a New HC

The new HC will have a very full plate when he arrives at NU.

First, he has to be at NU very early in order to put a coaching staff together. This assumes he will be making a lot of changes with his own team. If he is a current coach, he will no doubt be in a bowl game and would probably want to coach his team in a game.

Second, he will have to be here to recruit. That is more difficult than it seems because he and his new team will have to evaluate the players on the current roster, then get a list of potential recruits that fill that need. The new staff may be able to convince kids that have committed to them to come to NU.

Third, he may have a lot of players on NU's current roster who leave if MJ isn't the new HC. This will make recruiting even harder.

There could be other challenges with which I am not familiar.

This brings us to the announcement timing. I think it has to be done well before the end of this season. Maybe after Minnesota or Michigan. The longer Trev waits the higher the bar will be. Of course he may feel it's OK to go through another miserable season and start building for 2024.

  • Poll
How long do you give new HC time to hit 10 wins?

With a new HC hire, what is your expectation that Nebraska has it's next 10 win season?

  • If we're paying the HC elite money, it needs to happen within their first 2 years on the job

  • I don't expect 10 wins within their first 2 years, but you have to think they can get there by year

  • I'd expect it by Year 4

  • 5 Years

  • As long as they're getting 8-9 wins every year, I'd be okay keeping the coach - always next yr

  • To expect Nebraska to ever get 10 wins again is unrealistic - Not happening

Our OL

Terrible - No doubt
Bad Recruiting - No doubt
Bad Coaching - Possibly, at least until this year.

But something I think about often is youth. Look at who we threw out there against Illinois.

T - Corcoran - 3rd year player, but essentially had no time to develop and was thrown in too early, only to get hurt a lot
T - Benhart - 4th year player, but clearly not able to get it done. Should never have taken a snap until late 2021, but instead we put this guy out there in his RS Freshman year during COVID.
G - Piper - 4th year player, but a guy that we wasted his development year in 2020 by starting when he shouldn't have been, then sitting most of last season, only to reemerge after a few games this season. He is evidence of a player for which the coaches don't really know how to coach, but also is an indication that we're scraping the bottom of the barrel.
G - Lutovsky - 2nd year player who shouldn't be playing now, but could develop into a good player by year 4 if he doesn't get hurt, which he will.
C - Hixson - 6th year walkon who started 4 years ago then sat essentially for 3 years, then started again. Evidence that we have no real D1 center.

Then who didn't play:

T - Prochazka - 2nd year player and a crying shame. This kid looks like he has a lot of talent and can play, but we're ruining him by playing him too early, causing him to have injuries that he'll carry with him for as long as he plays.
G- Bando - 6th year kid who should have never received a scholarship. Not even as good as the 2nd year player who replaced him.
T - Anthony - transferred from OSU because he can't play there. So he moves up to a tougher league, smart.
G - Williams - Hurt, no one knows if he can play.
T, G - Banks - 4th year player who would be the biggest bust on the line if it wasn't for Benhart. Not to be too glib, but his biggest problem is his inability to block, something important for an OL.
Lynn, Conn - 3rd and 4th year players who will never see the field.
Nouili - 5th year players who's pretty good, but in PED jail.

IMO, Trev needs to get a coach who can use the portal to get 2 new starting OLs into the program for the spring. The OL next season needs to be.

RT - New Player
RG - New Player
C - Corcoran
LG - Nouili
LT - Prochazka

Piper, Williams, Lutovsky, Jenkins and another new older player need to be ST players and emergency backup players.
I like the 3 freshman we are bringing in. Benhart, Banks, Anthony, Lynn, and Conn need to leave.

Forum members accumulative totals for new HC postings

Thank you to everyone who chose to offer a choice for the next HC of the Huskers. I'll try to make this as short as possible.

There were 26 different coaches named. 10 drew the most support, and 16 didn't get named as HC, but that coach did have a comment(s) posted about them.

Without using a scoring system, this is what it looks like according to the overall room:
(I'm just gonna call these "votes" even though they are choices.)

The quandary I had was when a few posters listed from 3 to 8 suitable hires. In those cases, I simply used the first 2 names as they appeared in each list because I don't think any of them were in alphabetical order and I assumed those first 2 names were the first two that came to mind of the voter. It likely swayed the overall total, but I used the same rationale on all such lists.
**(These totals will be updated whenever a coach receives a "vote").**

Kiffin: 10 top votes, 7 votes as 2nd choice. There was 1 vote against hiring Lane.

Urban: 10 top votes and Meyer had 1 vote for 2nd choice.

Freeze: 4 top votes, and 5 votes as 2nd choice. There was 1 vote against Freeze.
** My personal comment: (Meyer and Freeze's past indiscretions played no part in many guys preferring them to lead the program. It's about winning).

O'Brien: 3 top votes, and 10 who would accept him if their first choice were not chosen. There were 3 "NO' or "Hell No to O'Brien" votes.

Aranda: 3 top votes, and 4 votes as 2nd choice. One poster would take Aranda if he brought along his DC and OC assistants.

Mickey: 4 top votes, and 3 votes in 2nd place. Some would take a different coach, but if not chosen they would support Mickey.
**Poster's cited main reason is lack of HC experience. One mentioned not qualified for the NU job. It will take more than beating powerhouses Rutgers and Indiana.

After the top 6 coaches were mentioned, there was a handful that received votes.

Fickell didn't get top votes but had 6 votes as 2nd choice. One poster said he would take Luke if his first choice was not chosen.

The following ALL received 1 vote as the top choices of the posters:

(** Updated: Leipold now 3 top votes, and Ruhle now 2 top votes**).

Whittingham
Ortegon
Cotton
Vance Joseph
(As HC and DC)
Ruhle (** Now has 2 top votes**) (plus as 2nd choice)
Leipold (** Updated)
had 3 top votes, 3 votes as 2nd choice, and 1 negative comment regarding his ability to recruit.

A few coaches had 0 top votes but had secondary support if the poster's top choice was not chosen.

Mullen
Clawson
Grimes
Peterson
Dykes

Several coaches received 0 top votes, but many of them had a comment(s) from the guys.

Klieman had 0 top votes but had 2 votes as an acceptable coach if the poster's 1st choice was not chosen. One comment said "NO" to Klieman.

Chadwell had 0 top votes, and 1 vote as an acceptable alternative. He had 1 vote where the voter did not want Chadwell.

This group had 0 top votes, but all elicited negative comments from posters.

Prime: NO
Fleck: NO
Campbell: 2 negative comments
Leach: 2 negative comments
Doeren: 3 negative comments were the most negative comments among the entire group of coaches.

I didn't take a lot of time to put this together, so it's possible I made some mistakes. In the next day or so, I will add some additional
comments that posters are made on some of the coaches.

I tried to make sure I'm not upgrading or downgrading any coach(s) that was named.

Lastly, I'm sure I will make corrections as the day goes on in an effort to display as accurately of a picture as can be.

Zach Duval

Outside of Frost he is the most responsible for this disgrace we are putting on the field. It's criminal how bad of job he has done. He has someone managed to make all of our players slower and weaker at the same time. Of all the unqualified people Frost brought with him this has to be worst. Our player development has been non existent. At least we back squat now!

Football Five Key Takeaways: Mickey Joseph and the Huskers' Tuesday press conference

Five Key Takeaways from Mickey Joseph and the #Huskers Tuesday press conference:

>> Breaking down the QB situation as Casey Thompson could still play
>> Another matchup with arguably the best RB in the B1G
>> Notes on Trey Palmer, Ernest Hausmann & more

Questions we all ask about the list of coaches

I'm piggybacking on leodis' list of the 10 coaches from his recent poll. Those listed coaches are:

Mickey Joseph// Bill O'Brien// Dave Aranda// Urban Meyer
Lane Kiffin// Coach not listed// Coach Klieman
Lance Leipold// Mike Gundy// Ty Whittingham

Questions, among others, you can ask yourself about each of these coaches:

1. If offered, will he take the NU job?
2. If hired, your level of confidence in his hiring or bringing in great Coordinators, including great recruiting coaches?
3. Do you feel he will implement an offensive/defensive scheme that will succeed in the Big Ten?
4. Are you concerned this coach may leave early for the NFL or another college job that opens?
5. Is this a coach that you feel might stay at NU for 10 years or more?
6. Is this a coach who may be taking the job for money?
7. Do you feel this coach has a history or is capable of recruiting on a national basis?
8. Do you think this coach has enough experience to take on the NU HC job?
9. What is the one thing that is a deal-breaker for not hiring this coach?
10. After the hire, what do you think the overall acceptance level of the fans would be?

You might answer most of these questions with Yes or No and have your answer.

Until the HC is named, this is just another way of looking at it.
