Would a Head coach.......

Take this contract offer? ( or something similar)
First two years, 6-7 mil per year (corresponding market rates for assistants)
Starting year three and thereafter. 1 mil (or pick a number) per win (pro rata per win for assistants as well but make upside really good)
No or very small buy out for being fired.
Lots of other details but you get the idea.
Agreeing with sentiments of another poster on the ridiculous guarantees
Just throwin' it out there

Is going cheap the Nebraska way?

Heading into (hopefully) the final week of this coaching search. Here's a couple hard truths to realize:

1) We've always gone cheap on coaches (Frost doesn't count)
2) We have paid near the top (if not the top) of D1 football in coaches buyouts over the past 2 decades

In this case, 1 + 2 = it's not being a good steward shying away from paying the right guy a crap ton of money

Here's the real truth. There are only 2-3 coaches in all of college football this doesn't apply to: There are only 2 kinds of coaches...Those that are fired and those that are soon to be fired.

Every coach comes with risk. The best bets generally give you about a 30-40% success rate. BUT the coaches you can get cheap come with a much HIGHER risk.

Here's the tier system of candidates (success = competing for conference championships):
  1. The only "sure" thing to work is probably Urban (I'd handicap it at 80% likely success).
    - Urban Meyer
  2. Your next best tier coaches probably give you about a 40% shot of success.
    - Rhule
    - Fickell (maybe a stretch)
    - Lane
  3. Talented individuals that are still outside the second tier, but it definitely could work (prob 25% chance)
    - Bielema (maybe 2nd tier)
    - Deion
    - Deboer
    - Kleiman
    - Aranda
    - O'Brien
    - Wittingham
    - Gundy
  4. Then there's the high risk tier. Guys who show flashes of talent but either don't have experience or they have some big question marks (5-10% chance)
    - Leipold
    - Monken
    - Traylor
    - Some FCS guy
  5. Super high risk (<5% chance at success)
    - Mickey
    - Campbell

That's how it works. You pay to move up tiers typically. Are we willing to spend to get into tier 1 or 2? Probably not. Most likely we end up in 3 or ever 4. We've always been pretty soft when it comes to spending. The one exception was (kind of) Frost, but I don't think it's fair to judge how willing we are to use the checkbook by how much we paid the hometown hero. It certainly increases the appetite.

Nothing in our history to me suggests we're willing to spend the money to get into the best tiers. The irony is that being in the top 2 tiers is being a good steward of the war chest, even though it costs more. We are near the top of P5 football programs in "buyout costs" over the past two decades and we got there by going cheap.

Please for the love of everything Husker football, try something different for this time instead of just expecting different results this time.

Football Blackshirt Breakdown: Nebraska hires Matt Rhule

Hey, everyone.

Here's this week's Blackshirt Breakdown. Jay talks Matt Rhule's potential scheme, his fit with the Huskers and much more, including thoughts on Casey Thompson's future at Nebraska with Rhule now in the fold.

Breaking News Alumni, administration, former players react to Matt Rhule hiring

Everyone was firing off their reactions to the news that Nebraska had hired Matt Rhule as its next head coach Saturday morning. Here are some reactions we compiled from social media shortly after the announcement.

Where does Nebraska search for talent in recruiting ?

Part of the importance of some of the coaches that were recently brought in was the ability to recruit in places that Nebraska can’t get into. Mickey and some of the other coaches were able to open doors to talent that will not be found in Nebraska no matter how hard we pull for the home town kids. Does Rhule hire staff with this in mind ? Trey Palmer walked in here and in one season became one of the most dynamic WRs we have had in years. He was a backup in the SEC. met wins championships and we need a lot of it. Where do we get it from ?

My only disappointment about the Rhule hire is that…

…his first game isn’t until August 31, 2023.

Overall, awesome work by Trev. I am so pumped about this hire.

This season really didn’t fulfill my Husker fix though. I feel like we waited all season for something good to happen, and then the season was over.

Oh well. Guess I will have to obsess over recruiting. Can’t wait for August 31 now though.

We'll know on Aug. 31

Make sure all your religious and spiritual icons are in their proper places on opening night next year when we play at Minnesota.

The first game has provided us with powerful omens for our last two coaching hires.

That Hail Mary by BYU in Riley's first game should have been a warning.

Then some deity sent the lightning storm to fug up Frost's first game.

Here's to a peaceful and competitive football game for Rhule's debut, win or lose. If some bizarre shit goes down, the entire regime will be doomed.

Volleyball Game Thread No. 5 Nebraska vs. No. 9 Minnesota

I'm back at Devaney tonight for the season finale as No. 5 Nebraska (24-4, 16-3) takes on No. 9 Minnesota (19-8, 14-5).

Nothing at stake tonight, just a matter of strengthening postseason seeds.

No Nicklin Hames for the Huskers - she's sick, so expect to see Anni Evans.

Tonight is also senior night, so Hames, Kenzie Knuckles, Madi Kubik and Kaitlyn Hord will all be honored after the match concludes.

On a personal note, this 8 p.m. first serve sucks. It's just awful.

Mickey Rumor

As a big time booster that is on the inside there is a 65 percent chance Mickey is the head coach next year. Mickey has presented his plans to Trev about who would join him on staff. There are some big, impressive names lined up to join if Mickey gets the job. A few current coaches would remain, but most would be gone. Mickey will get a full interview after the season, but if he wins this weekend don’t be surprised to see the interim position removed and a contract of 6 years and 5 million per season offered. There have been parents of current players letting Trev know they think Mickey should get the job, however there are some big time boosters who want Trev to just keep him on staff.

Trev has also been looking into exploring other apparel options other than Adidas due to their slow response to end the partnership with Kanye West. However this has also lead reps for Adidas to possibly increase sponsorship for Nebraska.
