Lane Kiffin = Bo Pelini?

Lane Kiffin has been a hot name lately, so it got me thinking. What's his signature win? How does he fair against ranked opponents? Is he even better than Pelini was?

Here's a look at his games against ranked teams:

Tennessee
#1 Florida: 13-23
#1 Alabama: 10-12

#21 South Carolina: 31-13
#12 Virginia Tech: 14-37

USC
#16 Stanford: 35-37
#1 Oregon: 32-53

#18 Arizona: 24-21
#4 Stanford: 22-43
#4 Oregon: 38-35
#21 Stanford: 14-21
#2 Oregon: 51-62
#17 UCLA: 28-38
#1 Notre Dame: 13-22

FAU
#9 Wisconsin: 14-31
#7 Oklahoma: 14-63
#16 UCF: 36-56
#5 Ohio State: 21-45
#18 UCF: 14-48

OLE MISS
#5 Florida: 35-51
#1 Alabama: 48-63

#11 Indiana: 26-20
#1 Alabama: 21-42
#16 Arkansas: 52-51
#18 Auburn: 20-31
#11 Texas A&M: 29-19 (this A&M team finished unranked at 8-4)
#7 Baylor: 7-21
#7 Kentucky: 22:19 (this Kentucky team is currently unranked and 5th in the SEC East)
* LSU: 20-45 (LSU was unranked when the game occurred, but are currently #15)

so here's where we are when comparing the two:
Bo PeliniLane Kiffin
Overall Record100-55 (0.645)84-42 (0.666)
Record Against Ranked Opponents8-17 (0.32)7-21 (0.25)
Bowl Game Record4-3 (0.571)2-3 (0.4)

The LSU game 10 days ago felt like a major indictment on Lane Kiffin, in part because it reminded me of Nebraska's 2014 game against Wisconsin (yes, the Melvin Gordon one). Like Nebraska, Ole Miss jumped out to an early lead against a team they very well should've beat, but were outscored 42-6 in the final 3 quarters. Out-coached and physically dominated for the majority of the game.

Something in my gut tells me Kiffin is the better coach, maybe it's the eye test or simply the magnification of emotions from watching your own team get crushed. But why? Kiffin is going to win a lot of the games on his schedule, but he seems to rest on the bottom of the 2nd tier of coaches (Saban/Kirby/Meyer/Petersen being tier 1, Lincoln Riley/Brian Kelly/Aranda/Gundy/etc being tier 2) in that there isn't really a body of evidence to suggest he's going to consistently compete for Conference Championships or do well against the titans of the conference.

It is easy to say "I would love to have Pelini's success right now" because its true for almost all of us. I think the feeling of always being on the outside looking in against top opponents would quickly return if we were to achieve that level again. Beating the Marylands and Rutgers, then getting stomped by the Wisconsin's and Ohio States.

What do y'all think?

Looking for some help of to identify a former Lincoln restaurant

Family are together and trying to identify the series of restaurants that existed on the south west entrance to gateway mall?

It’s a stand alone building, or at it least was. I k is there were a few restaurants that had cycled through the building. Can any one remember the names of the restaurants that occupied that building? I’m specifically looking for the ones through the 70s and 80s.

This is not granite stone, or whatever it is called. Different and newer building.

Changes to Bowl Season Coming Soon?

“The conversations are the first foray into what could be a years-long process of evolving the bowl slate in conjunction with the CFP expanding to 12 teams starting in the fall of 2024. Playoff expansion has further exacerbated a long-running narrative that bowls are slipping into irrelevancy.”

Basketball WBB: Nebraska vs. No. 14 Michigan Live Thread

Nebraska (10-3) comes out of the holiday break with a big one against No. 14 Michigan (11-1) tonight at PBA. Nice crowd flowing in on this Wednesday night. After a collision last week against No. 20 Kansas, Allison Weidner is in a hefty knee brace that will keep her out. Her brace looks very similar to the brace Kenzie Knuckles wore when she tore her ACL, so Weidner could have a similar injury.

On paper, this is certainly a winnable match up for the Huskers who've made the most three-pointers in the Big Ten. The Wolverines are anchored by their defense as they only give up 57.1 points per game which is second in the conference while also being the top free throw shooting team in the Big Ten with a 79.6% from the charity stripe.

I'm expecting Alexis Markowski to be a big factor like she always is. Michigan has the perimeter star power with former Husker Leigha Brown, Emily Kiser and Laila Phelia, but they struggle to rebound with 37.5 rebounds per game which is 11th in the Big Ten.

Cross Onoh off the board

“The plan it to take three more official visits in January and then sign in February,” he said. “I know I’m going to take official visits to Ole Miss (Jan. 27), Penn State (Jan. 13), and Michigan State (Jan. 20).

He had already taken visits to Old Dominion and Rutgers...

Oh, it’s coming . . . Any major goal work beginning in 2023?

I’m wondering if any of my fellow Insider’s plan to finally tackle that thing that has been on your list maybe for years, but you have never put the consistent, sustained energy in to accomplish the thing.

For me, it’s: 1) resurrecting a once decent golf game; 2) Re-engaging guitar which I admittedly temporarily set aside once I decided to take on said golf game; 3) working in Arabic fluency, and 4) it’s a surprise but definitely more important than all the others combined. Not getting into that one at this time as it probably falls into the triggering/controversial category for some fellow Insiders.

So tell me ladies and gentlemen, what are you personally taking on in ‘23 that will be moving you toward the person you are becoming, hmm?

National rivals staff rates Nebraska class

Clint Cosgrove gives us an A-. Very complimentary of Rhule’s closing efforts

Also thought it was interesting to see where the rest of the league landed. Seems like overall the B1G is getting more talented. The top 8 B1G teams all are in the top 40 nationally for recruiting rankings.

BIG +

Was in Lincoln over the holidays and talked to my grandson who is a Sports Communication Program and we were talking about BIG +. He said its terrible because the BIG network is not involved with the broadcasts at all. The home university is responsible for the entire production. He said some universities have only one camera and many use students to announce and do color. He said they asked him to announce a baseball game and he’s never placed baseball.
