Recruiting Two new FutureCast predictions

Both @Greg Smith and I have put in FutureCast predictions for Nebraska to land in-state Gretna OL/DL Mason Goldman and Ardmore (Okla.) LB Eric Fields.

Both players visited this past weekend as part of the Huskers' huge 15-visitor weekend. Wouldn't be surprised if these decisions are wrapped up sooner than later.

Malik Reed

Back in the portal. I believe this kid committed to us or said he would and then chose Wisconsin. Transferred out of there and went to Arizona. Now looking for a home again.Probably not a bad thing he didn't come here. Obviously if he did he would have already been gone. A lot of young football players never feel comfortable or want to wait their turn. Not sure which one describes him

Recruiting Florida transfer OLB sets Nebraska official visit

As we reported on Monday the Huskers are set to host Florida defensive back transfer Corey Collier this weekend for an official visit. The former five-star defender is rated as a 5.8 four-star in the portal. He's also the 38th best player in the portal according to Rivals.

Now we can also report that his teammate, OLB Chief Borders, will also be visiting Nebraska this weekend. The redshirt freshman (6-4, 241) would also fill a position of need for the team this season. This season, the second-year player appeared in all 12 games primarily on special teams. He registered a total of two assisted tackles in 2022.

Heading into both visits I really like where Nebraska stands with both players. If we could put FutureCasts in for transfer players I would log one for both Collier and Borders to become Huskers. It's also good that they'll be visiting this weekend with Miami native and Nebraska commit Dwight Bootle.

Recruiting Huskers offer 2024 four-star Pittsburgh LB with big-time offer sheet

Nebraska offered 2024 Pittsburgh LB Anthony Speca today. Speca is a four-star out of Central Catholic (Pa.) who has offers from Colorado, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin.

Also among his 20+ offers is Syracuse, so Tony White and the Husker staff will have some extra background on him.

***New Commit*** In-state 2023 Gretna OL/DL Mason Goldman commits to Nebraska

Huskers land their third commitment of the day in Gretna lineman Mason Goldman. He is their seventh in-state commit in the 2023 class. That'll be the most Nebraska has signed in one class since 2002 when it signed 10 in-state players.

Huskers have signed five scholarship players five times since then but never more than that in one class during that span.

Couple of former Husker commits receive juco rankings

I’m interested to see how the portal affects juco recruiting. We probably won’t have a clear picture for several years. I spotted a few former Husker commits - Ladarius Webb and Rodney Groce - in the new Rivals/TOS juco rankings.

If I remember correctly, Fisher played with Webb’s father in the NFL? Webb’s only major offer out of high school was Nebraska, but he decommitted soon after committing (not sure of the story on that). He is now headed to okie state after playing at Jones College.

Groce was an inside linebacker who ended up flipping from Nebraska to Mississippi state. Apparently he made his was to East Mississippi for juco, and is now headed to UTSA.

Trey Palmer received zero NIL money

SIAP. Local WOWT-Omaha just had a story that Trey received no NIL money from this past season apparently turning down over 20 different opportunities.

Paraphrasing, his reasoning was to be in better position as he focused first on his season at Nebraska and now as he prepares to turn pro, stating the NIL offers were the ‘short money’ and he wants to be in a stronger position to provide for his family long term.

Lovie Smith's defensive recruiting at Illinois

I noticed this past weekend that Mel Kiper has a number of Illinois players listed in his top 10 draft available rankings for every defensive position. And it reminded me that Lovie Smith, while often a terrible disorganized coach, really knew how to identify, target, and recruit "DUDES" for his defense. By "DUDES" I mean guys who looked and played extremely physical. All it really took was a coach like Fat Brett to show up along the new Purdue HC to really get the best out of these players. But check out this list of CURRENT and soon to be FUTURE NFL guys, ALL recruited by Lovie Smith:

Safety Tony Adams - New York Jets
LB Milo Eifler - Washington Commanders
LB Del'Shawn Phillips - Ravens
LB Jake Hansen - Texans
CB Justin Hardee - Jets
Safety - Kerby Joseph - Detroit Lions
DT - Roderick Perry - Cleveland Browns
DE Dawaune Smoot - Jacksonville Jaguars

Defensive dudes expected to get drafted in 2023:

Safety Sydney Brown
DT Jer'Zhan Newton
CB Devon Witherspoon
CB Jartavius Martin
DT Calvin Avery

Lovie definitely was on to something while identifying talent.
