RIP Andre Smith

Andre was my favorite player during my freshman year at Nebraska. There was one play that to me described how Andre played. There was a break away by the opponent and Andre came from under his own basket and sprinted as fast as he could, he was trailing the player with the ball and no one thought there was anyway he was going to make a play. As he approached the top of the circle he dove head first like Superman to knock the ball out of the players hand and hit the floor about the free throw line and slid all the way under the basket. The crowd went nuts. No player has ever played harder than Andre Smith, at least that I was fortunate enough to watch in person.

Maravich NCAA scoring record in doubt

Had no idea this kid was this close to passing Pete. Will need to win a few conference tourney wins to do it.... Oh and a pandemic rule that gave him an extra year.... And a 3 point line but other than that still a lot of points... Blurb from his game today below

Titans' Antoine Davis had his seventh-straight 30-point game and pulled within 63 points of tying Peter Maravich's all-time NCAA Division I scoring record.

Baseball FINAL: Nebraska 12, Northern Colorado 1

It's the home opener for Nebraska baseball in 2023 as the Huskers host Northern Colorado (2-8) who rides an eight-game losing streak while being coached by former Nebraska skipper Mike Anderson who's in his first year. Pretty chilly out here today in Lincoln so we'll see how big the crowd is today. Not many in the stands at the moment when we're about 40 minutes from first pitch.

LHP Jackson Brockett will get the midweek start today for the Huskers as the sophomore owns a 1.93 ERA in two appearances across 4.2 innings. A good start will be imperative for the Huskers to save some arms during this long stretch over the next few weeks. Griffin Webb will start for the first time this season for the Bears as he owns a 4.15 ERA in four appearances in 4.1 innings. He's allowed two earned runs on five hits with six walks and only one strikeout.

Your scout of the quick, two-game series:

This might be the only game we get between these two teams this week. Bad weather is expected to move into the Lincoln area tomorrow and could cancel the game. There was talk of rescheduling today's game into a doubleheader, but that never came to pass.

Basketball Nebraska's mindset ahead of Big Ten tournament, and a visit from Matt Rhule

Tuesday was the day for Nebrasketball's final practice before flying to Chicago for the Big Ten Conference Tournament. It was also the day the league released its postseason honors.

Derrick Walker was a second-team all-conference selection by the coaches while Keisei Tominaga was an honorable mention pick. Here's more on that, the Minnesota matchup and a practice visit from Matt Rhule that Fred Hoiberg and the players loved:

FWIW: Deion Sanders Creating Controversy at Colorado

SIAP but Deion's strong religious beliefs and preaching to the players are creating controversy at Colorado. With kickoff to the 2023 Buffaloes season just months away, Sanders is in the middle between two religious groups. One group that wants Colorado to force him to stop preaching his religious beliefs to his players while another one warned the university that telling him to do so could infringe on his rights.

Not the first time Deion has been controversial over religion. Sanders was known for expressing his strong belief in God when it came to his coaching style at Jackson State. When he left the Tigers for the Colorado gig, he was mocked for having had earlier proclaimed that God sent him to become the coach of Jackson State but then he left the job anyway for more money and a bigger stage.

Looking ahead to 2023 Husker Hoops

Seeing JL have such a nice finish to the year got me thinking about next year and who are some of the new faces and what we can expect out of them.. Obviously we will be bringing in several transfers again.

Who are guys that didn't play this year that we need to step up and what can we expect out of each one of them, ie Lloyd, McPherson, etc? And did D Dawson get injured or something, why didn't he play recently?

Question for those in the know about such things

What are the options for a player who in the eyes of the staff after spring ball is not to be included in the 85 limit needed by the fall (we're currently at 101)?

1. I presume one option is to retire and keep the full ride through graduation as this was something that has been afforded players who go through a coaching change.

2. Obviously, the player could transfer if there's another team who wants them, either on a scholarship or a walk-on.

3. This is where I have the question. Under the new rules (i.e. no rules) regarding NIL money, can a school create a NIL package for a current (or new) player that's equal to or better than a scholarship and give them that in lieu of a scholarship, or does a player need to be on scholarship to accept NIL?

I'm still uncertain about 3 above because if it's the case that NIL can be provided in lieu of a scholarship, then the scholarship limit is essentially meaningless for the P5 schools. Is that the case? Is it possible that we only lose a portion of the 16 that need to leave to get to 85 and the remainder play on NIL, if available?

Just curious about the rules pertaining to this.
