Football Charting each snap in Marques Buford's 3-3-5 debut shows a lurking playmaker added to a defense that could use it

During Saturday's live watch of the game, I kept track of every Nebraska defensive snap looking for 24 in white. I charted each of Marques Buford's snaps because I was extremely curious to see exactly how he would be utilized all over the place in the secondary (that's how I assumed he would be used, anyway) and what roles he would fill during his debut in the 3-3-5.

He was, in fact, used in several different ways and lined up in multiple spots, made a couple touchdown-saving tackles and made two more in which he fulfilled his assignment, did his job and set up a teammate for an impact play. I'm pretty excited to see how his usage in this defense evolves and so is Buford, who commented yesterday on his debut and role in White's scheme:

Basketball Braden Frager to reclassify to the 2024 class

This is a pretty big development for the Huskers.

In-state wing Braden Frager out of Lincoln (Neb.) Southwest, who was originally in the 2025 class, is reclassifying to the 2024 class and will join the team next season. Today is the first day 2024 recruits can sign with their programs.

I spoke with Frager about why he decided to go that route:
“I feel like for my development, it’s the best thing for me. Instead of going out to a prep school or something, I feel like with graduating early I’ll get in the program and, at a young age, I’ll begin the development that not a lot of kids my age are getting while they’re still in high school. I feel like it’s just what’s best for me. It’ll be better in the long run.”

The plan is for Frager to graduate in May, enroll and join the program at NU in June.

The Huskers also gained the signature of Nick Janowski, a 6-foot-4 four-star guard from Wisconsin:

Janowski committed to the Huskers back on April 14.

“I am excited to add both Braden and Nick to our program for next year,” Fred Hoiberg said in a statement. “Both are highly competitive and fit the culture that we have established. Both are excellent shooters and can play on or off the ball which is important in our offensive system.”

The Hoiskers are 1-0

Still plenty of questions after this tuneup game against Lindenwood, who’s defense was just awful, but definitely a clean 84-52 win. What I saw with the new players:

Reink Mast - not as dominate in this one as I was hoping, but he was a little banged up. I’m not sold on him doing super well in the B1G but like that he can shoot the 3 and pass. His style doesn’t look that different than Derrick Walker on the block.

Jarron ‘Boogie’ Coleman - I like this kid. A good passer, creative on offense, can hit from anywhere. Athleticism probably isn’t what made him good in the MAC and I think his maturity and vision will carry over to the B1G.

Bryce Williams - good footwork around the rim, think he had one three But could’ve shot it better. Long kid

Josaiah Allick - I knew I would like him coming in. Tough physical player with probably the highest motor on the team. He manufactured extra possessions with his effort and also hit a 3. He’ll be a fan favorite

Eli Rice - You can see this youngster has natural talent, he just needs to rein it in and gain some experience to be more consistent. hopefully we don’t need him to play much this year.

Matar Diop - didn’t play much but saw some nice athletic flash on display from the 6’10” freshman, raw talent that could develop into a nice player.

No Juwan Gary, Keita or Tominaga in this one. Wilcher needs to have a better year, he at least lost some weight and looks more like a basketball player but he and Hoiberg played well. Those guys have typically looked a lot better vs. weak competition though.

Fred is on a warm seat this season. It seems like every year he has a deeper team than ever and we still suck until the last month or so. I think this will be a defensive team again but we have more capable scorers than Fred’s had here so far. Just a matter of putting it all together. Expectations are low and hopes are high.

GBR!

Volleyball Huskers Sign Olivia Mauch and Skyler Pierce

From Nebraska Athletics Communications:

The Nebraska volleyball program announced its 2024 signing class on National Letter of Intent Signing Day on Wednesday.

Head Coach John Cook and the Huskers secured the signings of two of the top prospects in the nation, libero Olivia Mauch (Bennington, Neb.) and outside hitter Skyler Pierce (Lenexa, Kan.).

Mauch, a 5-6 libero, was the starting libero for the U.S. Girls U19 Team that won gold at the FIVB U19 World Championships in Croatia in August. She had 13 digs in the championship match, a 3-2 comeback win over Turkey. Mauch averaged 7.1 digs per set and had 49 service aces in her senior season at Bennington this fall, leading the Badgers to the Class B state semifinals each of the past two years.

Pierce, a 6-2 outside hitter, also has major international experience with the U.S. National Team program, having competed at the FIVB U21 World Championships in August. Pierce starred at Olathe Northwest, where she averaged 4.6 kills per set with a .402 hitting percentage to go along with 230 digs, 67 aces and 43 blocks in her senior season in which the Ravens finished third at the Kansas 6A state tournament.

She has played at a high level with the U.S. Under 19 National Team and helped them win a world championship this summer in Croatia. She’s got a feel for the game that you really want to see in a libero. Olivia is always in the right spot at the right time and just makes it look easy. She is an elite serve receiver who can easily take charge of the back row. We have watched her emerge into a fiery and vocal leader for her teams. Olivia understands what it means to be a Nebraska volleyball player and we are looking forward to her continued growth as a Husker."

Cook Quote:
"Skyler is a six rotation outside and is a talented multi-sport athlete who excelled in basketball, too. She has spent time with the U.S. Under 19 and 21 teams and has competed at an extremely high level. Skyler already bleeds Husker red and has traveled to more of our matches than any recruit we’ve had before. Skyler is an incredibly gifted athlete who is not only a great attacker, but can serve, pass and play defense in the back row as well. She has a very calm but stable demeanor to her but is a fierce competitor who wants the ball in big moments. We are excited to see her develop into a dominant left-side attacker, and she will be a great addition to our team."

Recruiting Recruiting Rundown: Numbers game and checking in on official visitors

In this week's Recruiting Rundown I take a look at Matt Rhule's comments on the numbers and check in on official visitors this season.

Basketball Fred Hoiberg sees strong culture fits with 2024 additions Nick Janowski, Braden Frager

Nebraska signed Nick Janowski and Braden Frager to its 2024 class on Wednesday. Fred Hoiberg talked about both today. He thinks they both fit the culture and playing style perfectly.

How you doing on injuries?

Just as the title states, how are you guys doing on injuries?

Some of these last really tight games might come down to who stays the most healthy.

We have had some major injuries on the offensive side of the ball and last week was disastrous as almost the entire starting OL got injured.

With an already incompetent offense, things might keep heading south (if that's even possible).

BTW, don't be mean to me. I'm on a temporary ban from the Iowa website. Apparently they don't like porn anymore and I called one of the moderators a little bitch.

:)

Movies

Is it just me or do movies suck anymore. I can't remember the last time I left a theater thinking, "hey, that was really good." I've been to some "OK' ones but nothing great. I must also say, I don't go to nearly as many movies as I used to. (Probly cause it's nearly $25 for a ticket, popcorn and soda) We also have every movie channel in existence so can watch most from home..but still nothing lately that I care to watch twice.

So, what's the last good movie you went to?
