Basketball WBB: Nebraska hires Julian Assibey as assistant

Julian Assibey will join the Nebraska women's basketball program as an assistant this season as announced by head coach Amy Williams on Monday. Assibey has spent the last three seasons as an assistant at Florida where he helped the Gators reach the postseason in every season. Previously, he spent four season as an assistant at Montana State. Assibey replaces former assistant coach Tom Goehle who announced his retirement on April 13.

Here's the full release:

A long-time NCAA Division I assistant with a track record of success around the country, Julian Assibey will join the Nebraska women's basketball staff for the 2023-24 season, Head Coach Amy Williams announced on Monday, April 17.

Assibey (pronounced ah-SEE-bay) comes to Lincoln after spending the past three years as an assistant coach at Florida, where he helped the Gators to three consecutive postseason berths. In his first season (2020-21) in Gainesville, Assibey helped the Gators to their first postseason berth since a 2016 NCAA Tournament bid, and their first postseason victory since 2014. In 2021-22, Assibey helped guide the Gators to a 21-11 record and a trip to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. In 2022-23, Florida finished with a 19-15 overall record that included three wins to advance to the Postseason WNIT Great Eight.

"We are very excited to add Julian, his wife Kaylee, and son's Malachi and Elijah to our Husker women's basketball family," Williams said. "Julian is a high-energy, passionate coach and a dynamic recruiter. His 16 years of collegiate coaching experience coupled with his values and integrity make him the perfect person to positively impact our student-athletes through the game of basketball."

Assibey went to Florida after spending four successful seasons (2016-2020) at Montana State, where he helped the Bobcats to a pair of Big Sky regular-season titles and one conference tournament crown. In addition to his assistant coaching duties, Assibey served as the recruiting coordinator for the Bobcats, who produced nine all-conference honorees including a pair of Big Sky players of the year in his four seasons.

In 2019-20, Montana State produced one of the best seasons in school history, finishing with a 25-6 record that including a Big Sky regular-season title with a 19-1 mark. The Bobcats advanced to the Big Sky Tournament title game against Idaho, but the game was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fallyn Freije was named the 2020 Big Sky Player of the Year. In Assibey's first year at Montana State (2016-17), the Bobcats rolled to Big Sky regular-season and tournament titles, led by league player of the year Peyton Ferris. The Bobcats earned an automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Tournament and finished the season with a 25-7 record that included a 15-3 Big Sky mark.

Assibey previously served the 2014-15 season as the video coordinator at Colorado, before advancing to a full-time assistant role for the Buffaloes in 2015-16. He returned to the state of Colorado after a pair of previous stops at Western Colorado (2010-11) and two years at Metro State Denver (2007-09).

Following his season at Western Colorado, Assibey traveled to Andover, Mass., where he spent three seasons as an assistant at Merrimack College. The Warriors posted a 12-game improvement in the win column from his first season (5-21) in 2011-12 to his second season (17-12) in 2012-13.

Born and raised in Ghana, West Africa, Assibey grew up in Downey, Calif., before earning four letters in men's basketball while also competing in track and field (long jump, triple jump, 4x100-meter relay) at William Penn in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He earned his bachelor's degree in sports administration and strength and conditioning in 2005. Following his two seasons as an assistant coach at Metro State Denver (2007-09), he spent one season on staff as an assistant coach at William Penn (2009-10). While coaching at Merrimack in Massachusetts, Assibey completed his master's degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University in 2013.

Julian and his wife, Kaylee, have two sons, Malachi and Elijah.

What little signs of improvement are we hoping to see in the Spring Game?

I want the operations to be better/crisper - so many times it felt like the Frost offense would get momentum and then one little mistake would lead to 3-5 penalities and punt after punt

same with special teams - clean operations, better recognition of where the ball is, better tackling

OL play -still expecting quite a struggle but would love to see more tenacity and confidence, by the tackles in particular

OT Netflix Florida Man

Gave it a shot yesterday, it's billed as kind of a comedy caper best way I can describe it. Group of people going after a truck with a found sunken treasure in it. There was some giggles from me for it it wasn't the best show I have ever watched personally.

Basic premise guy (mob driver in Philly) goes to his hometown in Florida to find boss' runaway girlfriend OFC. Guy's family is a player in the story father (ex chief of police now a bit of a criminal) and his two man crew, sister/brother in law with a daughter. I think it tries to hard at times and probably didn't need to be 7 episodes but I did watch it to the end so it wasn't garbage. Comedies are probably to hard to make in this world in fear of pissing off fringe members of society

Either way, just saying it's not a blockbuster and it's not garbage for mee it fell in between..

Rule changes

Prior to 2023, have you been annoyed and concerned about the length of games?

  • Yes

  • No

  • Yes, but I don't agree with the changes to the management the clock proposed.

  • No, but I don't mind the proposed changes

Results are only viewable after voting.

The proposed rule changes to the way the clock will be managed for the 2023 season have been mentioned on here several times recently so they are no secret. If you've missed it here is a link that summarizes the changes: Timing rules changes proposed in footballNational Collegiate Athletic Associationhttps://www.ncaa.org › news › 2023 › media-center-ti...

I'm curious as to the scrolls viewpoint on this. Personally, I see this having a very big detrimental change on the game and have had no concerns about the length of games currently. Generally, I have a DVR that can speed the games up all I want so I find this whole discussion a little disturbing. It isn't 1990, and broadcasting technology has changed dramatically so that I rarely spend more than 90 minutes watching a game, and neither does anyone else if they are concerned about the amount of time for the broadcast.

Rather, I see these changes driven by the television networks to reduce dead time in the broadcast and try to stop some of the fast forwarding. Just another bad example of the money overruling the quality of the football IMO.

I'm not against change, but change to the way the game is played should be few and undertaken very carefully. This is one of the major reasons I seldom watch the NFL for decades because they are constantly changing the rules about seemingly everything. Consequently, any discussion of who is the best historical player at a position are just folly because comparing a recent player to one that played 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago, etc. is impossible because they really played different games and it's comparing apples to oranges for the most part.

Baseball Live Thread Game 33 FINAL: Nebraska 18, Northwestern 5

Nebraska (20-11-1, 6-2) is back at Hawks Field on this windy afternoon as they look to sweep Northwestern (5-24 3-5) after beating the Wildcats in the first two games of this three-game weekend series. Yesterday, Nebraska only needed one inning as the Husker offense went off in the second inning to plate nine runs on eight hits as NU had two singles, three doubles and a two-run home run by Gabe Swansen to cap it off. Jackson Brockett was equally as impressive on the mound, turning in a career-high six shutout innings scattering three hits with four strikeouts. Here's that recap from yesterday:

It was the complete opposite on Friday as Northwestern hopped on top of Husker ace Emmett Olson 3-0 as he could only go 3.1 innings. The bullpen picked up the slack as Corbin Hawkins came in to fire 3.1 shutdown innings while Kyle Perry followed suit with 2.1 scoreless innings. The Husker offense kept on coming and went on to score eight unanswered runs to take the series opener. Here's that recap:

Today it'll Will Walsh (1-1, 3.86 ERA) on the mound to take on RHP Luke Benneche (0-3, 9.28 ERA). Nebraska has to feel good heading into today as they will have the full strength of the bullpen available beceause of yesterday's blowout win. That includes bullpen ace Shay Schanaman and impact lefty Jake Bunz. Here's the full series preview.
