Nebraska vs Illinois

You aren't going to win an argument when you stance is that the B1G is a tough league this year. It simply isn't, but by all means continue tossing up those softballs, I need the BP

I am not trying to argue SOS, I am saying, we have the best venues in the BIG. Its hard to play in this conference. Metrics wont show that.

Buckeyes pull it out. Too bad - I was looking forward to Doc Itch wearing the goat horns.

In an average year, yes. But this isn't an average year. The venue only carries so much weight. Outside of the top 3, I wouldn't fear playing any of the other 11 teams in a tournament setting this season

Indeed. I like NU's chances. It just sucks that the current system favors teams from smaller conferences. NU is a good team.

I’ve been fearing that Kansas game is going to cost us on selection Sunday hope I’m wrong.

Smaller conference teams earn their shot too.

Man, you guys had them. Urgh. That is the name type win you needed. I don't think they are that good, yet they get all the name love. Its tough. If it can happen to NU, it can happen to Iowa.

Back in the day, 10 BIG wins, you were in.

The B1G isn’t strong this year. Everyone knows this. But applaud Nebraska for winning the games. There are only 4 teams in conference who also took care of business.

Penn State is a nice team, right? They didn’t find a way to win 12 or 13. Indiana not a bad team. They couldn’t win 12 or 13. Same with Maryland.

There is something to racking up these wins no matter how down the conference is.

What gets me is the PAC 12, I’d take the top 7 in the B1G over the top 7 in the PAC 12.

Washington is 8-7 and have a higher RPI then NU only because they beat KU.

Before I head out @scarletred

You are my bro. You have been since back in the day of Soundoff. True good and stay healthy my friend.

And watch 12 Bars, the Eric Clapton movie. Good stuff.

You trying to convince us, or yourself?

I see you tagged me. I was busy. What happened?

I'm a referee. I have a perspective on the game on a different level than you and most other people. I try to share that perspective with people who are honest about wanting to know what we're looking at (and not looking at) and why we may have decided to not call something. You seem a little salty about that. We miss plays. Every game. It's part of the game that will never go away.
That is 1 sport I'd want no part of officiating. It moves so fast. So, props to you sir! People only need to try to officiate the sport they are complaining about to develop a little empathy for those who do it.

I've done it. Quite a bit in fact. I got out of it because of exactly what I am saying. 99% of those guys would rather cover for each other than get it right or admit they were wrong. When you go to ref school and the first thing they tell you is to never question another ref, the system has no chance.

It was also more difficult officiating with only two officials till they eventually went to 3.

I have done both.

I think I’m already convinced unless you’re suggesting I’ve got some Freudian stuff going on.
Just curious. We all agree we have won alot of games. But the SOS and RPI don't really lie.

If SOS and RPI were everything, there would be no need for a committee. There would be no howling after selection Sunday, which there is every year.

The reality is that the committee doesn’t always follow what the masses and numbers say. And many cases, when they’ve gone against the obvious numbers play, the teams who narrowly made it in have shown they were worthy selections.

Time will tell, but I still believe with a win tomorrow over Penn State, that Nebraska’s name will be called.

That's not happening. Sig bet?

I think the SOS evidence is skewed dramatically and based almost solely on the non-conference early season games. We all know that teams can change dramatically as the season goes on and so can the strength of a conference. That's why we often have a conference that was supposedly weak rise up and have multiple teams win games in the tourney. To wit, the B1G not too long ago. IMO, the B1G's bottom tier of teams have improved dramatically as the season wore on. JMHO.

Beat PSU and I don't see how they keep NU out. There would have to be awfully strong evidence to put some bottom feeder B10 or SEC team in ahead of them.

Who are you including in the bottom tier? Illinois, Rutgers and Iowa are a combined 2-17 in the month of February.

I know the records may not be great. I watch to see how teams are playing and how they compete. Did you watch Illinois play Purdue the other day? Those teams all have pretty good talent and if they get hot from 3 can play with anybody. Iowa's young guys didn't play very well this year but they have talent. There isn't a single team I consider a gimme in the B1G this year. Not one. Even with the loss to Illinois on the road, I think the run NU has gone on is remarkable. Obviously it would be better if they had beaten Purdue or MSU during that run but they did pound a pretty good Michigan team. I'm not saying it's because of Miles but at least he hasn't screwed it up.

So how have Rutgers and Iowa been playing and competing? And yes I saw Illinois play Purdue, but a close loss to Purdue isn't going to keep this trio of teams from dragging down the Big Ten's status this season.

But, I don't agree with the pundits who think the Huskers are a long shot to get a bid. I think it's well within their reach, but I feel like they need a win today and one win in New York.

I saw that PSU is listed as one of the last 4 out. Huh? Either way, good news for you guys because you will have a chance to pick up another quality win today.

Wish that were true, but I just don't see the Huskers getting all that much love for beating the #85 RPI team at home. But I do think winning today and one win in the tournament would be enough to get NU into the field.

Appreciate it, Meo!

Honestly, my motive wasn't and has never been self-serving or to protect anyone else. All D1 officials are big boys, they don't need me protecting them on a message board.

I watch football games with college football officials, and I am able to ask questions and get good answers, and it helps me understand why things are or are not being called, who is looking where, how a call can get missed, etc. It makes the game more enjoyable for me to watch because I realize the officials are not nearly as incompetent as I thought they were. I see a lot of misunderstandings on this board with respect to basketball officiating, so I thought that if I could help answer questions that others have about hoops and the officiating, that they might enjoy the game more knowing what officials are doing, what they're looking at, what the "big picture" of the game is to referees. Most fans think our only job is getting as many plays right as possible, and they don't have an appreciation for what goes into running a game. And yes, we all miss plays. Hopefully our misses don't impact the outcome of the game, but sometimes they do.

Some here obviously have an axe to grind. It doesn't bother me because I understand they could never do what I do. They're message board tough guys, and that's where it ends. I do my best to side-step the trolls and keep it moving.
