Dr. Toms two blunders that he even admits to were Barry Sanders and Simeone Rice. Both wanted to come to Nebraska but Tom already had a small player at the same position they would play in the classes they would be coming in. Barry behind our O lines, WOW

Barry wasn't a T.O. blunder as by the time everybody came after Barry it was already too late and that was Okie Lite's fault as OSU requested Barry's HS tape his Jr year and never gave it back essentially making it impossible for anyone but them to get him. It took Barry's HS coach to threaten them to get the tape back and they told OSU that if they didn't return the tape that they would make sure that he would never go to Okie Lite and the tape was returned in late fall of his senior year in HS which alas was too late for everyone including DONU.

his stats were unremarkable his jr year.
nothing to look at.
and he was a wingback.
a coach at wichita north at the time commented to an old acquaintance that the coaching staff felt like barry had held back for his older brother ('85 graduate?) and a classmate ('86 graduate?) the next year who had all the press beginning their senior year and got hurt in the 3rd game.
he basically had 6 games to show what he had.
no one, and i mean no one saw it coming.
add-in that he sat out the end of the last game to let a guy on another team set the city league record...
miss out? sure, but very little time to react.
pat jones gets credit for hiding the film, and well, ncaa violations...
Every single NFL Hall of Famer that we didn't recruit plus every College All-American that wasn't recruited by Nebraska. Does that cover it?
Me. I would have been the best damn waterboy this program has ever seen.
Hard to say how much we did or didn't recruit players, but to me some of the biggest didn't gets for me were Gayle Sayers, Barry Sanders and emmitt Smith
