Trev Alberts - contracts for dummies

Contract comparisons.

Deion Sanders = $29.5M, Sanders will owe Colorado $15 million if he leaves after one season, $10 million after the season season, $8 million after the third season, and $5 million after either of the final two years of the deal

Luke Fickell - $57M, he has to PAY Wisconsin $8M if he leaves before 2027. If Wisconsin fires him before 2029 they only owe him $6.5M

Matt Rhule = $74M, 90% guaranteed ($66M)

We gave Matt Rhule a contract that you only give if you bring in a guy with a name like Harbaugh, Meyers or Sean Payton. This isn't about "Well it isn't your money". This is about stewardship of finances; and he overpaid a bad contract for a guy that has never beat a ranked team. Make no mistake, regardless of who's money this is we are stuck with Rhule for the next 5 years. There will not be money to afford a buyout after 3 years.

Yes, you could argue that maybe we hit the lottery of coaches and we are winning divisions in the next 2-3 years. That is a huge gamble on a guy that we don't even know if he is a consistent winner. I don't think you'd want to lock this money on a gamble, just pay the money on a proven name and if there isn't one available do what Colorado did and gamble on the field so that if it doesn't work out you can get out of it easy and see what candidates are available 2 or 3 years from now instead of 5.

TLDR - This locks us in a potentially terrible situation if Rhule doesn't work out. Fans gave Frost a lot of patience because he was a Husker but I'm suspect if we don't make a bowl game next year that sell out streak will be in danger in 2024 and the sharks will be circling with no way to get out if 2024 fails too.

I don't get us . . .

So many DONU fans thought it would be a complete joke to hire Deion. Colorado hires him and all of a sudden people are hanging on everything that we knew Deion would do: Take his good JSU players with him, and recruit high school and portal kids with success on name recognition alone. It's possible that he could assemble a nice team by the time fall practice rolls around. It's possible Rhule could, too. However, it's not worth worrying about. Trev would never have hired Coach Prime, and we were perhaps unlucky that a school on our schedule next year did hire him. He'll have reasonable success, and once his son graduates, he'll move on to a different school.

Football Huskers DL enters transfer portal

Nebraska redshirt freshman Marquis Black has entered the transfer portal. Black, who just completed his third season with the Huskers, was one of the top defensive line recruits in the Southeast out of Georgia's Eagle's Landing Christian Academy.

He played in just two games in 2021 (Fordham and Buffalo) before redshirting and did not play in 2020 or 2022.

Football ***LIVE CHAT: Blackshirt Breakdown with Jay Foreman

Hey, everyone.

Let's get this chat started. A little bit of a switch up this week — we'll open this thread an hour early so everyone can post their questions to @Foremanjay5655. He'll come in at 8 p.m. and answer them until 9 p.m. like he does every week.

In case you missed it, this week's Blackshirt Breakdown dove into new Nebraska offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield's game at Kentucky, when he was calling the plays for the Gamecocks. Make sure to check it out. We had a lot of fun doing it and I learned a lot about what Satterfield liked to do in certain situations:

Here's a written version of the breakdown, too:

Basketball Nebraska shocks No. 7 Creighton in Omaha: “It’s hard to put into words.”

This one meant a lot, you could tell it in the postgame press conference.

Nebraska goes to Omaha and shocks the No. 7 team in the country. What a night for Fred Hoiberg and the Huskers:

Badgers losing at least 8 to Portal

Eight and counting for the Wisconsin football program.

Offensive lineman Michael Furtney, reserve safety Titus Toler and reserve defensive end Tristan Monday have announced plans to transfer from the program.

All three announced Monday, the day the transfer portal opened.

Furtney, Toler and Monday joined quarterback Mertz, wide receiver Markus Allen, wide receiver Stephan Bracey, quarterback Deacon Hill and offensive tackle Logan Brown.

Recruiting Recapping loaded week for new staff as live period opens

What a week.

Nebraska's staff has extended 19 offers in places with deep talent pools and has made visits all over the state. Recapped it all (or at least most of it) during a BUSY first six days for the new staff:

Football Marcus Satterfield's South Carolina stint offers hints at future NU offense

New Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule landed on longtime assistant Marcus Satterfield to be his offensive coordinator.

While we won’t truly know what Satterfield’s offense will look until August when Nebraska opens the 2023 season at Big Ten West foe Minnesota, we can look back at his previous stop — South Carolina — to at least get an idea of what he liked to do. It could be beneficial to see what Satterfield did in different situations on the field.

We’ll make this a feature and look at more games of Satterfield’s in the future. But for now, let’s start with South Carolina’s win at Kentucky from earlier this season.

Along with a written version of this feature, you’ll find a Blackshirt Breakdown video later today with our very own Jay Foreman breaking down a few of Satterfield’s plays as well.

Buffs Introduction

I watched the CU Buffs intro of Prime... and WOW.... I did not realize, not being in the business, how A Class we are. That looked like a High School intro. The AD actually corrected the President on stage on number of years, etc. They actually called our that Prime's first home game was against Nebraska.... so PLEASE don't sell your tickets, etc. We are not good... but we still haunt them. lol

Recruiting 2023 offensive lineman to keep an eye on...

With Luke Fickell leaving Cincinnati for Wisconsin a lot of teams will be taking a look at their commitment list. One player that I'm told Nebraska likes is New Jersey 2023 offensive lineman Nick Oliveira.

I reached out to Oliveira and he did hear from recruiting staff Vince Guinta who told him that the team likes his film and that Matt Rhule would be in touch this week.

It seems like an offer will come soon for the lineman. This of course gets more interesting depending who fills the role of recruiting New Jersey for the new staff. Expect Jersey to be an area of focus again for the Huskers to go along with Texas.

I won't always bring info on players before they even get offers but it's an offensive lineman and every piece of the puzzle helps as the staff is being put together.
