Baseball Nebraska adds UNO transfer Rans Sanders

New Nebraska pitching coach Rob Childress and Will Bolt added their second transfer pitcher of the offseason with a Sunday pledge from former UNO hurler Rans Sanders. The senior will have one season of eligibility when he arrives in Lincoln.

Sanders spent one season in Omaha as a reliever for the Mavericks. Sanders recorded a 3.80 ERA in 13 appearances with a record of 2-1. He struck out 25 batters compared to four walks in 23.2 innings while allowing 10 earned runs on 27 hits. Prior to his time in Omaha, Sanders pitched two seasons at Cloud County CC where he went 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 29.1 innings as a sophomore. He struck out 28 batters in 21 innings as a freshman out of Grand Island.

Sanders represents the second transfer pitcher as the Huskers look to revamp their pitching staff for the 2024 season. Brown transfer Bobby Olsen announced his transfer back on June 6.

Recruiting 2024 LB Derrick Brown Jr. discuss Nebraska camp offer

Avon Old Farms (CT) 2024 linebacker Derrick Brown came to Lincoln to work. He attended Nebraska’s camp on Saturday and came away with a scholarship offer.

"I was stoked when they offered me,” Brown said. “When Coach Rhule told me that I had the scholarship offer, it was a really good feeling. Words can’t describe it. I had a great camp today. They put me through some drills. I was able to complete those and then I ran a great forty. A 4.5 and jumped to 32-inch vert so they offered me."

Brown has been working hard this offseason to get better, especially with his footwork so it made him excited to see that his hard work paid off. One of the highlights of the camp on Saturday was getting to work directly with the coaching staff. Brown got a great impression from them.

"I love the coaching staff. They care about you and they want to see you succeed,” Brown said.

“I can tell that. I even asked current players and they also they said the same positive feedback on the coaching staff. That they really care about you and they're going to push you to be the best that you can be."

Brown actually plans to stay in Lincoln and come back to camp tomorrow to spend more time with the coaching staff. He particularly liked working with linebackers coach Rob Dvorcek who Brown says put him “through a gauntlet today.”

“The thing I'm looking for most is the people,” Brown said. “A coaching staff that cares about my development as a player on the field and off the field. Also, a school that will set me up for success after football.

I accepted an assignment to be a field video cameraman for (8) College World Series games. See you there?

This season I was part of the video production team for Creighton baseball games and that grew into an (8) game assignment for this year's College World Series. I leaned hard on my UNL Broadcast Journalism degree from the 1990s to earn the position. It seems I'm the sole Cornhusker on the production team. I feel like this is a great opportunity to sport some fresh new Husker gear while I'm on the field shooting live video footage for the CWS game coverage. Any Husker boosters out there that feel where I'm coming from? If yes, feel free to hit me up.

For most of my assignment I'll be video cameraman at the Camera #1 position, which is at the far end of the home team dugout (third base line). I'm easily visible to the crowd in the stands and the home team players. We do have to wear a grey production team shirt, but I feel like my hat, pants, and shoe selection is part of my artistic interpretation. I'm picturing a red or white Cornhusker sun hat for protection from the sun and perhaps some Husker pants, shoes, sunglasses, etc. I suppose this could work for a separate business logo sponsorship, but would prefer to wave the Cornhusker flag.

Also, perhaps we can even find somebody in an influential position in Lincoln that can help me transfer my video skills from the Creighton production team in Omaha to my dear Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln. I've been in Omaha since October after my divorce in Milwaukee, but I'm wondering if I should make my way all the way home to my hometown of Lincoln.

Aside from the cameraman / Husker gear aspect, who's going to be in Omaha for the CWS? I live in downtown Omaha and can join the crew to represent our beloved home state Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Recruiting Texas RB Kewan Lacy sets Nebraska official visit

National analyst Cole Patterson was at Lancaster High School's spring game last night and Lacy told him that Arizona State, Baylor, Nebraska, Ole Miss, and TCU before making a commitment.

I've confirmed today that Lacy will take his official visit to Nebraska on June 23rd weekend. As a junior, Lacy posted 392 rushing yards, averaging 5.5 yards a carry which was second only to 2023 Arizona State running back signee Kyson Brown's 707 yards rushing yards. Now Lacy has the number one spot in the rotation expect a big senior year from him.

Football Weekly Mailbag: Biggest surprises about Nebraska fans, covering Huskers in Year 1

Friday Mailbag Time!

Last Thursday (June 1) officially marked my first year on the Nebraska beat, so I answered some questions about Year 1. Thank you to everyone who has asked questions so far, and thank you for the overall positive embrace from the start (which I wrote about in the mailbag):

Belmont Stakes

Hey @itseasyas1-2-3, I'd love to get your thoughts on this year's Belmont Stakes.

With the scratches in the Derby and the lack of big names in the Preakness, I'm actually considerably more excited for the Belmont than I was for the previous races. IMO - Forte, Angel of Empire, and Tapit Trice are the best three-year-olds in this year's crop. We finally get to see them all run in the same race.

I think this field sets up perfectly for Forte. There's a little more early speed here than the Preakness, but I anticipate Forte sitting right off of National Treasure's hip with modest figures and having plenty of gas left in the tank to hold off the closers. He's never ran crazy figures, but I honestly thought this horse had the talent to win the Triple Crown before he scratched on Derby Day. The amount of tactical speed that he's shown when asked is unbelievable. I'm really hoping that the 70-day layoff will scare enough people away to get 7/2 on him (unlikely).

Recruiting Papillion TE Eric Ingwerson locked in with Pitt

Mentioned this in a thread somewhere but so it doesn't get lost, Eric Ingwerson is no longer taking his official to Nebraska. Here's what he said to the Pitt site:

“I’m not planning on going to Nebraska anymore,” Ingwerson told Panther-Lair.com. “I’m 100% committed to Pitt.”
