Football Northern Illinois at Nebraska Prediction & Preview (CollegeFootballNews.com)

Northern Illinois (1-1) at Nebraska (0-2)
Saturday, September 16 - 7:00 PM (ET) - Lincoln, Nebraska

Why Northern Illinois Will Win
Will the real Northern Illinois please show up?

It managed to push through a road game at Boston College in an overtime thriller to start the season, and then it couldn't stop turning the ball over in a total clunker of a 14-11 loss to Southern Illinois from the FCS world.

No one gives the ball away like Nebraska does -- four giveaways in each of the first two games -- and the Huskies will need at least that many to pull this off.

Northern Illinois has been amazing on third downs on both sides of the ball, it controls the clock for well over 36 minutes per game, and .......

Why Nebraska Will Win
.....lost in even more pain and suffering in Lincoln is an ugly 0-2 start under Matt Rhule is the defense.

Both Minnesota and Colorado threw 44 times -- with varying degrees of success -- but the Husker front line has been great against the run, the pass rush is tied for the nation's lead with 11 sacks, and the offense doesn't have to press.

Northern Illinois doesn't have the firepower to put up big numbers to make this any sort of a back-and-forth fight. Just don't turn the ball over and all will be fine.

Who Will Win
Finally, Nebraska fans will get to have some fun.

Oh sure, there will be some mixups and problems to keep this from being too easy, but this will be an enough-is-enough moment.

With QB Jeff Sims banged up and questionable at best, the Huskers will keep it on the ground with at least 45 carries.

There will be a decent early lead, and for the first time since October 1st of last year against Indiana, there will be a win by the home team in Lincoln, Nebraska

Prediction
Nebraska 30, Northern Illinois 13

Spread
Nebraska is favored at home by 11 points. The O/U is at 43 points.

Curious on what everyone thinks to this point… I think he has been solid and has managed the game, I don’t fault him in that fumble, our line is just flat out horrid… I don’t think I’ve seen enough to say he should be starting but the fact that’s he’s managed the game with minimal turnovers or one that wasn’t truly his fault, I’d be ok seeing him start until he gives us a reason why he shouldn’t be

Recruiting NIU visit weekend thoughts

We’ve got a little different setup for visitor info now than before so I wanted to give you guys some quick thoughts. Obviously with this weekend being coach Matt Rhule’s first home game there will be a lot of recruits in town. I’m expecting many of Nebraska’s commitments to be back in town as well. As of right now the only confirmed official visitor is California offensive tackle Brandon Baker.

THE BIG ONE

If you are only going to have one OV that’s a pretty important one to have. I’m still very skeptical of Baker ending up in Lincoln but if he makes it to campus, I give the program a puncher’s chance. I do know from talking to sources around the country that Texas has a lead heading into this visit and his announcement on Sept. 24. NIL is playing a heavy role here so the 1890 pitch will be a very important component to making up ground.

WESTSIDE DUO

Omaha Westside three-star athlete Caleb Benning will be on campus this weekend as I reported last week.

Things are trending in a very positive direction for the Huskers with Benning. The fact that he has no other visits scheduled is encouraging and I know that the Huskers the highly of him. Benning has clearly been the best player I’ve seen this year in the state. Full disclosure, I see Carter Nelson in two weeks.

As @Front Runner posted on the board this week 2024 Omaha Westside quarterback Anthony Rezac will also be on campus for the game. He’s having a terrific senior season. He actually looks a lot more like the quarterbacks on the Huskers in terms of play style. As I wrote before, I’d offer him now and figure it out later because he hasn’t come close to his ceiling yet.

I’d expect other Westside players on the sidelines as well.

STONG REGIONAL AND LOCAL PRESENCE

One thing that I believe will happen under Rhule is the program will become a destination for regional talent. The staff believes in their eye for talent and development ability. It makes sense that they could do a better job of recruiting underrated regional prospects. It’s part of the formula at Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota and Kansas State that has been basically missing at Nebraska for years. It's not the only part of the recruiting formula but it's needed at Nebraska.

One of the steps in correcting that is to have a lot of players from 300 miles and closer on campus. Expect to see a lot of those players for future classes on campus Saturday.

Make sure you check back into the board for the photo gallery on Saturday because there will surely be some surprise guys pop up. I’ll also give some more thoughts on who and what I observed down on the field ahead of Rhule’s home opener.

Husker OL

As I watch MN making plays in UNCs backfield and cause problems for a mobile QB Maye, I see more evidence that our OL has played better ball this year.

I see SOME scrollers, I hear Doc Rob and Big Red Overreaction just trash these guys weekly.....sure it's an easy group to target and once a game we get a clip of Corcoran or Piper getting beat....

But how much of this is attributed to our offense having no ability to pass or be explosive? How much more running room do we have if the defense is sitting deep to respect the pass? Do Corc and Piper have those ouch moments if the guys' they're blocking aren't pinning their ears back?

I think the numbers support we are run blocking better. Especially against stacked boxes and a whopping 120 pass YPG. In that Minn game i posted on here multiple times that I think 2 of those sacks were on Sims holding the ball or being sacked by a 3 man rush with his athleticism. As I watch Minn give UNC issues, it's a small sample size, but evidence keeps mounting to an argument that they're not a bad unit this year and they, like our entire team, are victims of Sims and our anemic passing game.

Just an opinion. I think they're performing more like a top half of the conference unit vs a bottom half, and they're taking some unwarranted shit SO FAR this season.
