Recruiting Nebraska's a top choice for 2025 QB Alex Manske after great game day visit

"I feel like every time I come back, more of the coaching staff knows me. They're all just really nice. They have told me I'm their guy. They told me to do whatever I have to do like and take visits but just know that I'm their guy. They really liked me and I just like every coach down. It's really nice. So, it's just really cool.

“It definitely makes us feel like we're wanted because when you're going somewhere you want to go somewhere where you wanted. If you have one bad game or something that they just won't give up on you because they've like put more into you if that makes sense.”

The feeling is mutual between Nebraska and Iowa 2025 QB Alex Manske. Hit the link...

Recruiting Recruit Reaction to win over Northern Illinois [UPDATE: 9/18 1:12pm]

I'll have several solo interviews coming from the visitors this weekend but I'll also use this space to give you guys quick updates on what the recruits are saying after the first win of the Matt Rhule Era.

>> Nebraska commit Jake Peters was in Lincoln for his first Husker game and was blown away.

"My visit was great! It was my first Nebraska game and their game day atmosphere was super cool," Peters said. "I had a wonderful time talking with the coaches, players, and recruits. Can’t wait to be back for the game next week!"

Peters had a really good time talking with the commits and meeting some of them in person for the first time. He's looking forward to getting closer with the commits and the team this fall. I asked Peters his thoughts on the running game especially in the fourth quarter.

"I think the coaches and players did a great job executing the running game," Peters said. "You could see in the 4th quarter that NIU’s defense was getting worn out from the physical run game of Nebraska."

Expect to see Peters on the sidelines a lot this season.

>> Class of 2025 in-state running back Tony Palmer was also in town. The South Sioux City standout had a great experience on the visit. He especially liked getting to see the players up close and seeing how they interact with each other. I observed him getting some quality time with running backs coach EJ Barthel which he enjoyed.

"It was good to catch up with him," Palmer said. "He knew I was leading the state in yards and they teams I’m going against so it’s good to know that he’s watching me play."

Palmer has 924 yards and 13 TDs already this season.

>> Priority 2025 offensive tackle Jack Lange was at Memorial Stadium yesterday. The Missouri native was very impressed with with he found in Lincoln. He thought the whole experience was amazing including the fan support. The coaching staff and how much they want to win stood out to him as well.

"I can just tell that they care about the players on the team and the players respect the coaching staff," Lange said. "Matt Rhule has had a very huge weight put on his shoulders and he and the other coaches are doing everything they can to make this a winning football team. They are in it for the long run and know it won’t happen overnight but they have a vision for the future of the program and the believe in it and are all in."

Lange says that he can "absolutely" see himself as part of that future and the coaches want him to be too. I noticed him hanging out a lot with Belleve West OT Jacob Arop and Rivals100 OT Brandon Baker. He liked his time with those two.

"They are both great guys and I felt like I formed a bond with most of the recruits that i talked to," Lange said. "Brandon and Jacob are great people and i would love to see them again. I also talked to Danny Kaelin and he’s an awesome dude."

Lange doesn't know yet if he will be back on campus this season but would like to make it happen. That all depends on his schedule.

>> Omaha North 2025 defensive line commit Tyson Terry was back in Lincoln for Rhule's home opener. Terry is pretty candid so it was great to get his thoughts on the visit and game.

"Well, the environment was electric. Was sweet to see this staff open up with a night game that had great energy," Terry said. "This staff is very personable and it was great to see them interacting with the recruits and their families before the game. It was a different approach for pregame with this staff, which I feel was a positive compared to some of the things of the past during pregame."

Terry noted that it was "awesome" getting to see Matt Rhule's first win and experience the post game locker room. He thinks it was a huge weight lifted off his shoulders and makes him excited about what the future holds. The other thing that has Terry excited is the play of Tony White's defense.

"It was amazing seeing that defense shut the offense down the whole game," Terry said. "It felt like they were playing with some passion and swagger I haven’t seen in the past years. It was getting me pumped up just watching how we're going to be playing in a few years."

Terry will be back in Lincoln next Saturday for the Louisiana Tech matchup.

>> Millard North defensive back Caden VerMaas was back in Lincoln this weekend. Like the other commits, he was very happy about the result of the game.

"It was awesome. I would say it was the best visit that I have ever been on there," VerMaas said. "Meeting up with the players in the locker room after the game was definitely the best part I'd say. And I think Nebraskas defense looked really really good!"

I asked him what stood out to him about the defense.

"I think the defense already looks super comfortable in the 3-3-5 and I also think that [Nash] Hutmacher is a really good interior d-lineman. I loved when they dropped Gifford back for almost as a FS look on a package too."

In another thread I said that VerMaas' comp coming out of high school is Gifford so it's interesting to see him watching Isaac so closely.

>> There was one player in town this weekend that offered a scholarship for the 2024 recruiting class. Texas multi-sport standout JD Crisp was in town and Nebraska offered him on Saturday.

Crisp had been a priority recruit for rival Iowa and holds a scholarship offer from the Hawkeyes. The Houston native is also a standout baseball player too. It was his first time in Lincoln for a football game and he won’t forget the experience.

“It was absolutely amazing the experience was unforgettable,” Crisp said.

What stood out the most to Crisp is the support was amazing from both fans and the coaches. It made him feel like he will have a second home in Lincoln if he picked Nebraska. The Huskers offered him as an athlete because they feel he could project to either side of the ball. That is just fine with Crisp.

“I’m really excited to have the option to play either side to see where I fit best,” Crisp said.

Crisp loved his time in Lincoln and having the chance to speak with several coaches. He hopes to be back in Lincoln soon.

>> Exchanged a few messages with Omaha Westside 2024 ATH Anthony Rezac. The prospect getting a lot of buzz in-state said that it was fun being in Lincoln on Saturday and he had a good time. He didn't get a chance to speak with coach Rhule or Satterfield. However, he did speak with other staffers.

"I talked to coach [Omar] Hales and coach [Tony] White," Rezac said. "And I was really impressed the whole night with the performance on the field and the new facilities."

Rezac might hit a game at Kansas and Notre Dame. His brother is committed to the Irish but they want him to be a walk-on. He's open to hearing more from Nebraska moving forward and feels like this is just the start of their communication.

MEMORIAL STADIUM CELEBRATES 100 YEARS
One of the most iconic venues in all of college sports reaches a milestone this fall as Nebraska's Memorial Stadium hits the 100-year mark. Nebraska will celebrate the anniversary of Memorial Stadium throughout the 2023 home season.

- Memorial Stadium was built at a cost of $450,000 in 1923 and had an original capacity of 31,080.

- The first game in Memorial Stadium occurred on Oct. 13, 1923, with the official dedication of the stadium a week later when Nebraska hosted Kansas on Oct. 20, 1923. Memorial Stadium was dedicated to honor Nebraskans who served in the Civil War and the Spanish-American War, and Nebraskans who died in World War I. Later the dedication was expanded to honor Nebraskans who died in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

- Nebraska owns an all-time record of 429-147-13 at Memorial Stadium.

- The Huskers have posted 33 unbeaten seasons in Memorial Stadium history, most recently in 2016.

- Every game at Memorial Stadium since 1962 has been sold out, a streak of 390 consecutive games. The 390-game sellout streak spans nearly two-thirds of all games played at Memorial Stadium.

- Nebraska opened the 2023 home season under the lights at Memorial Stadium against Northern Illinois. The first night game in Memorial Stadium occurred in the 1986 season opener in a win over Florida State. Nebraska is 50-10 all-time in home night games following the win over NIU.

ABOUT HEAD COACH SONNY CUMBIE
Sonny Cumbie is in his second season as the head coach at Louisiana Tech. Cumbie joined the Bulldogs in 2022 after serving one season as the offensive coordinator and interim head coach at Texas Tech in 2021. In his first season at the helm of the LA Tech program, Cumbie led the Bulldogs to a 3-9 overall record and posted wins over Stephen F. Austin, UTEP, and Middle Tennessee State.

Prior to his one-year gig at Texas Tech, Cumbie was the offensive coordinator at TCU from 2014 to 2020. Cumbie began his coaching career in the college ranks as a graduate assistant at Texas Tech in 2009, before becoming an assistant coach with the Red Raiders in 2010 and offensive coordinator in 2013.

The 42-year-old Cumbie is a graduate of Texas Tech (2005) and was a starting quarterback for the Red Raiders in the 2004 season, when he led the nation in passing yards and total offense while leading TTU to the 2004 Holiday Bowl. LAST MEETING: SEPTEMBER 2, 2006
#20 Nebraska 49, Louisiana Tech 10

LINCOLN -
Zac Taylor matched his career high with three touchdown passes and No. 20 Nebraska won its 21st consecutive season opener with a 49-10 victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday.

The Cornhuskers effectively mixed the run and pass against their overmatched opponent and amassed 584 total yards. They scored on the last series of the first half and opening series of the second to break open a 14-10 game on their way to extending the longest winning streak in openers in the nation.

Taylor, who has thrown at least two touchdown passes in nine of his last 10 games, was 22 of 34 for 287 yards. He was intercepted once on a deflected pass. Four tight ends caught touchdown passes. Taylor's were thrown to Matt Herian, J.B. Phillips and Josh Mueller, and backup quarterback Joe Ganz threw one to Hunter Teafatiller late in the game.

The Huskers, 105th nationally in rushing last season, ran for 252 yards. It was the first time in 14 games that the Huskers had rushed for more than 200 yards. Coach Bill Callahan made good on his promise to involve all four of his I-backs. Cody Glenn had 88 yards on 13 carries, Marlon Lucky 79 on 13, Kenny Wilson 47 on 15 and Brandon Jackson 36 on three. Glenn, Lucky and Jackson each had touchdowns.

First-time starter Zac Champion completed 12 of 27 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown, with one interception for Louisiana Tech.

Glenn finished an 11-play, 78-yard drive with a 1-yard run seven seconds before halftime, and Taylor threw a 6-yard TD pass to Phillips for a 28-10 lead early in the third. Taylor completed 12 of 13 passes on the two scoring drives, including 10 in a row. Herian, who hadn't played since October 2004 because of a broken leg, caught a 13-yard pass from Taylor to open the scoring in the first quarter.

Tech had to settle for Danny Horwedel's 23-yard field goal after driving from its 20 to the Nebraska 5 on its next possession.

The Huskers then made it 14-3, with Lucky scoring his first career touchdown on a 13-yard run. Tech's Johnathan Holland made the catch of the game to pull his team to 14-10. It looked as if Champion had overthrown Holland along the left sideline, but Holland accelerated and stretched to pull in the ball with his left hand at the 2, crossed the goal line for a 39-yard touchdown and bounded over a padded wall into the first row of the end zone seats.

The Huskers squandered three scoring chances. What would have been a 29-yard touchdown run by Wilson was nullified by a holding penalty far behind the play, Taylor was intercepted on a deflected pass by D'Anthony Smith inside the 5 and Wilson fumbled inside the 10.

Attendance of 85,181 was a Memorial Stadium record. The stadium was expanded by 6,500 seats as part of a $50 million facilities project.

Football Matt Rhule after NIU win: "This game was about belief"

Matt Rhule spoke after the game about fans wanting hope that the program is going in the right direction. For him it was about belief.

“Before the game Giff [Isaac Gifford] came up to me and said ‘you know what coach no matter what this will never get old.’ But I think the biggest thing is that as much as this was hope for a lot of people that we are moving in the right direction for me this was about belief,” Rhule said.

“I believe that what we are doing is working. I believe we are doing it the right way. I believe we can overcome the first two games and being close but not close enough in the first one. The players believed and showed belief in each other. In today’s day and age that can be hard but we have special players. I’m glad they got the win the way we got it. But that’s how we are going to play. At least for right now.”
