Farrell update on Dylan R.

Don’t kill the messenger….

Might as well give an update on 5-star QB Dylan Raiola as he will visit UGA, Nebraska, and Oregon in the upcoming months. His visit to USC recently puts them as the leader, and I think Georgia is a very close No. 2 and could regain the lead after a visit. However, there has been talk of Raiola coming close to securing off-campus housing at USC and a few potential NIL deals in LA. If that’s the case, this is a stronger lead for Lincoln Riley. I’d put USC at 55%, UGA at 30%, and maybe Nebraska at 10%. Right now Oregon is an outlier, but he will be at a massive recruiting weekend for the Ducks for their spring game.

Football LIVE THREAD — Nebraska spring practice No. 3 open to the media

Morning, all.

A portion of Nebraska's Thursday morning practice — its third of the spring — will be open to the media from 8 a.m. until approximately 8:40 a.m. We'll be there with our cameras and eyes and post any interesting observations in here like we did yesterday for Pro Day. We'll get the sights and sounds video, as well as more complete observations posts, out ASAP.

Later in the morning, following practice at a little past 10 a.m., OC Marcus Satterfield, DC Tony White and 2-3 players will be available to the media. We'll do our best to post updates from our phones for that in this thread as well. Once the coaches are done talking, I'll get busy with a more complete quick hits post on what the coordinators had to say. More feature stories will follow throughout the day.

In case you missed it from yesterday, Garrett Nelson punched a hole through a wall after learning he didn't get an NFL Combine invite. Well, he was probably joking. But the guy is determined to make a team:

Here are the observations from Wednesday's Pro Day inside Hawks Championship Center:

And the sights and sounds from @jansencoburn:

Football Most important takeaways from open practice, coordinator press conferences

Steve Marik, Geoff Exstrom and I gave our most important observations and notes from Thursday's open practice – plus our biggest takeaways from the press conferences of Marcus Satterfield, Tony White and players Quinton Newsome, Billy Kemp IV and Nash Hutmacher.

California National Parks

My wife and I are empty nesters and are thinking of taking off for a week in may on a trip to California. We are driving and just kind of loosely planning some stuff like going to Disneyland for a couple days and then driving up to San Francisco for a couple days. I have a national park pass and we would like to see some national parks out there. Has anyone been and have any that you would recommend. We’ve kind of thought of Redwoods, Sequoia and/or Yosemite national park. We thought of Death Valley too. I heard Sequoia had some bad fires a couple years ago and parts of the park aren’t accessible. Is that true and how much of the park has been affected?

Chris Hickman

Had high hopes for the kid, but just didn't seem to be able to grow into a TE.

But you know what? He got to play 4 years of college football, got a free education, and actually got some playing time here and there. Can keep his scholarship until he graduates, if he hasn't already.

I would have taken that when I was in college. He'll be a killer receiver in the intramural flag football league this fall!

Football Observations from Nebraska's Pro Day

Here are a few quick observations from Nebraska's Pro Day. Inside you can find a sights-and-sounds video as well as interviews from a few of the guys who talked. I'll get started on a Garrett Nelson story, but here are the observations:

Basketball 2024 four-star guard Nick Janowski visiting Nebraska next week

Confirmed that 2024 four-star guard Nick Janowski of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, will take an official visit to Nebraska on Monday and Tuesday.

The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Janowski holds offers from other Big Ten programs like Wisconsin and Iowa, as well as Marquette, Iowa State, USC and Virginia Tech.

This past season, Janowski averaged 23.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. He shot 54% from the field, 76% from the free-throw line and 41% from 3-point range.

Last nights baseball game is what I expect to happen anymore

The last several years of Nebraska's men's sports has been like last night's baseball game. Just when you think things are looking good they give a game away to the other team.

One thing is clear to me why waste time on coaches who cannot get the job done. Hoilberg is like 40 and 83 at Nebraska and the baseball team can't beat UNO or Creighton.

I believe Nebraska needs a new basketball coach and if baseball does not show some good improvement its time move on.

I wish Nebraska's men's sports were gravitating in mediocrity instead of laying at the bottom of the league in men's sports. I am very excited about Rhule so maybe things are changing.

O and D line additions. Who has an immediate impact?

Offensive Line Departures: Hunter Anthony, Broc Bando, Brant Banks, Trent Hixson, Kevin Williams Jr.

Defensive Line Departures: Devin Drew, Colton Feist, Mosai Newsom
Key Offensive Line Returnees for 2023: Bryce Benhart, Turner Corcoran, Ethan Piper, Nouredin Nouili, Teddy Prochazka

Key Defensive Line Returnees for 2023: Nash Hutmacher, Ty Robinson, Stephon Wynn Jr.

Offensive Line Additions: Ben Scott (Arizona State transfer), Jacob Hood (Georgia transfer), Gunnar Gottula (early enrollee), Sam Sledge, Brock Knutson, Mason Goldman
Defensive Line Additions: Elijah Jeudy (Texas A&M transfer), Kai Wallin (junior college transfer), Maverick Noonan (early enrollee), Princewill Umanmielen (early enrollee), Riley Van Poppel, Vincent Carroll-Jackson, Sua Lefotu, Cameron Lenhardt, Jason Maciejczak
It's been suggested that Raiola didn't get a fair shake under his former boss, and fortunately, he has an immediate opportunity to prove skeptics wrong. Ben Scott gives him an anchor at center along with providing an interior swing player in case of emergency. Nouredin Nouili and Ethan Piper both offer experience on either side of Scott while Teddy Prochazka has shown he has what it takes to be a starting Big Ten offensive tackle.
The biggest challenge for Raiola is finding another proper tackle opposite Prochazka. With an excellent showing, early enrollee Gunnar Gottula can make a statement the role should be his, while Brock Knutson and Mason Goldman show up in the fall to make cases of their own. That said, Nebraska taking a peek at a post-spring transfer portal roster for an experienced starter shouldn't be ruled out. Sam Sledge also signs up once fall camp kicks off to offer an alternative to Nouili and Piper, if necessary.
Defensive line coach and eight-year NFL veteran Terrance Knighton inherits Nash Hutmacher and Stephon Wynn Jr. to go along with the savage Ty Robinson. In addition, he's the beneficiary of an immediately eligible 2023 class crown jewel in Princewill Umanmielen. The four-star prospect joins Husker legacy Maverick Noonan in getting familiar with their new coach's teaching style early.

Vincent Carroll-Jackson, Sua Lefotu, and Cameron Lenhardt will arrive on campus later this year with hopes to fill any cracks in the depth chart. Be sure to keep an eye on Jason Maciejczak come August, an athlete with the skill to play either side and one sure to cause a tug-of-war between Raiola and Knighton.

Any chance the Huskers employ a 2-QB system this fall?

It seems each QB has a unique skill set and they clearly want to get Sims on the field (at least according to how Rhule described his abilities). I am not a big fan of this approach but it may be one worth exploring in this specific instance. I still think Casey Thompson can be quite a stud given time and a better scheme to operate in.
