Two words: Overhead Squat

I’m not talking about P5 and such, but lower level D1, FCS, DII.

They are going to make a kid do an overhead squat with just the bar. Great measure of if the kid is an athlete who can bend, and therefore an athlete that can get better with real body strength, flexibility, and functional movements.

Edit: I’m not talking about a lift to do everyday or trying to turn this into the best lift for athletes thread. I’m literally saying that these schools will make the kid do an overhead squat in from of them with just the bar, then will cross the kid off their list if he can’t do it.

Core Jackson could be back as soon as Wednesday.

Jake Bunz is playing catch and has thrown a couple bullpens.

Colby Gomes has not got back on the mound at practice.

Kyle Perry is scheduled for surgery on the 19th.

Today, we got our first of four open practice windows of the spring. Here are some quick observations from the defensive side of the ball Thursday.

McGahee told me his overall thoughts on the visit.

"I loved it," McGhee said. "The staff showed us a lot of love. The facilities are the best I’ve seen in country. Love the coaches up there."

Nebraska's defensive staff told the Florida native they want him to play the Jack in their defense. That's a hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker spot and they told him that the defender reminds them of Hassan Reddick. McGahee loved that and how much the Huskers could feature him in their defense.

It helped that Nebraska already has a couple players that he's familiar with. They were in his ear during the visit.

"I played with [Dwight] Bootle and [Corey] Collier in high school. I got to hangout with them while I was up there. They were trying to get me to commit."

Things went well enough for McGahee to set a quick return visit for Nebraska's spring game on April 22. He was pleasantly surprised by what he found in Lincoln. Nebraska is now squarely in the mix for him.

"At first I didn’t even want to visit because it was so far and so cold," McGahee said. "After Monday with all the love the coaches have shown and how crazy their fans are they definitely one of my favorites right now. The plans they have for me in their defense is the main thing that puts them up there."

Class of 2024 three-star ATH Caleb Benning has finalized his spring visit schedule. Here's the rundown for the Omaha Westside star, who is the No. 6-ranked Nebraska player in a class that is pretty stocked with in-state talent:

March 15 or 17: Minnesota
March 21: Kansas State
March 25: Nebraska (continuing to shape up as the Huskers' monster spring visits weekend)
April 4: Iowa State
April 6: Wisconsin

*Planning to visit Vanderbilt and Iowa, but dates have not been set yet

I am looking at going to a practice round so I can take some pictures. If anyone has gone and has any tips I am all ears.

Loved his answers in his interview.

"I'll put my dog out there if he protects the ball and wins us games!"

He wants to run an offense that highlights the players he has.

These are the answers that make a great coach. Don't box yourself in. Work with what you got and be flexible. All offenses work but you need to mold them to your team and then they should continue to evolve.

Less than 15 minutes away from Nebraska (18-14, 8-10) taking on Kansas (21-11, 9-9) in Lawrence in the WNIT Super 16. The Huskers took down the No. 20 Jayhawks in December of 2022 85-79 in 3OT.

Game can be seen on ESPN+ at 6:30 p.m.

This is one of the biggest matchups in the WNIT, even if it is only the Super 16. Kansas and Nebraska are the No. 2 and No. 3 NET teams in the tournament, trailing only No. 19 Oregon. The Huskers came away with a 74-65 win over Missouri State in the first round and followed up with a 77-57 killing of Northern Iowa on Sunday at PBA.

Kansas took care of Western Kentucky 86-72 in the first round before defeating rival Missouri 75-47 last Friday at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Huskers are set to host one of the biggest recruiting events in years the weekend of March 24. Matt Rhule and his staff are loading up that weekend with top targets in hopes of kickstarting the 2024 recruiting class.

Now that we are under a month until that event I am going to use this space to keep a running list of players we have confirmed here at Rivals.

There will be plenty more players added to the list and I continue to reach out to prospects and speak with sources.

Boganowski's stock is rising and he was offered by Tennessee on Monday. He's excited to get to Lincoln: "I'm ready to check out the facilities a little bit more in depth and be able to talk with the coach in person."

March 7 UPDATE

>> One of Nebraska's top running back targets for the 2024 class will be on campus March 24 weekend. Virginia RB Peyton Lewis let me know that he will be in town. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound running back is a reigning state champion on the track and is hoping to repeat this season in the 55- and 100-meter races. During indoor track, Lewis also runs in the 200, 300 and 4 by 200 meter races. That kind of track speed is something that Rhule and his staff covet.

"I'm looking forward to getting to meet the coaches and build a better relationship with the people i’ve been talking to."

>> Finally heard back from Missouri defensive end Williams Nwaneri. He confirmed that is he is visiting Nebraska March 24 weekend too. He's definitely in discussion for Nebraska's top defensive target this cycle.

Interestingly enough, he will be at UGA this weekend along with Dylan Raiola and Ryan Wingo.

We are headed to Terry Peak tomorrow for the first time . We have been going to Keystone and Copper forever but getting tired of the lift ticket prices for family of 7. Figured we’d give this a try. Not expecting it to be anywhere close to as good as Colorado but if you’ve been there and have some tips or dos and donts let me know. Thanks!!

Nebraska will hold its Pro Day tomorrow. The sessions in the weight room will not be available to the media. Then, the portion that we will be able to watch beings around 10 or 10:15 a.m. featuring the 40-yard dash, 3-cone drill, 20-yard shuttle, long shuttle and position drills.

After all of that wraps up, participants will be available to the media for interviews at their own discretion.

We do not have a list of players who will be participating.
