Husker History: QB to WR/DB

Below is an incomplete list of players that were recruited here to play QB and finished their Husker days at a different position. Please let me know who I am missing . . .

McCathorn Clayton: DB 1988-89
Tony Veland: DB 92-95
Frankie London: 1998-1999
Bobby Newcombe: 97-01
Mike Stuntz: 99-02
Zach Darlington 12-16
Heinrich Haarberg? 2020- WR/TE?
Jeff Sims? 2023- DB?

Husker Athletics goes 0-for-3 on Black Friday

Today started off so promising. Nebraska FB on the verge of a bowl game, VB with an undefeated season still alive, SOC in the Elite Eight. All three lost despite each having a good-to-great chance to win at the end.

FB = missed go-ahead FG, game-losing interception (again) leading to FG as time expired
VB = Led 19-18 in Set 1 and 22-19 in Set 2, lost both sets and got swept
SOC = tied game w/ three min left in regulation but allowed an OT goal to Stanford and lost 2-1

Not trying to twist the knife, not trying to be an ass. It just sucks. All of it. Time to regroup and rally.

Talk about fake ID, that is the worst 10-2 team ever.

And the coach is crying like a bitch about one questionable call. They are better than the rest of the west by the most razor thin margin. And by nearly all accounts, the west is the worst division in power 5 and probably all of D1. I'm looking forward to the ass kicking they will get when they play a good team for the 2nd time this year and get exposed as the absolute fraud that they are.

Football Postgame Notes: Iowa at Nebraska

Postgame Notes: Iowa at Nebraska

- With the Iowa win, the Nebraska lead in the series is now 30-21-3, including 15-8-1 in Lincoln. The Hawkeyes lead 9-4 since Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011, and Iowa has now won six straight in Lincoln.

- Freshman receiver Jaylen Lloyd had a 66-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter. It marked Lloyd's third TD catch of at least 58 yards this season. He joins Ohio State's Marvin Harrison Jr. as the only Big Ten players with three catches of at least 50 yards this season

- Lloyd caught a touchdown pass in consecutive weeks, marking the first Husker true freshman with a touchdown catch in consecutive games since tight end Matt Herian in 2002

- The 66-yard touchdown pass was the longest play Iowa has allowed in 2023

- Defensive end Ty Robinson and nose tackle Nash Nutmacher each blocked a field goal in the first half, marking the first blocked field goal of their careers for both players. It marks the first time Nebraska has blocked two field goals in the same game since a 7-6 win over Pittsburgh on September 17, 2005 (Zach Potter, Adam Ickes).

- Nebraska has a total of four blocked kicks this season, including three field goals (Elijah Jeudy vs. Purdue) and one blocked punt (Blaise Gunnerson at Illinois)

- Quarterback Chubba Purddy made his second consecutive start, giving Nebraska three quarterbacks with multiple starts in 2023. This marks the first time in at least 50 years Nebraska has had three quarterbacks make multiple starts in the same season

- Linebacker Luke Reimer had a season-high 10 tackles to increase his career total to 293, moving him into third place on Nebraska's career tackles list. Reimer passed Dedrick Young (284), Lavonte David (285), and Mike Brown (287) in today's game. Today marked Reimer's 10th career double-digit tackle game

- Offensive tackle Bryce Benhart started at right tackle, marking his 41st career start. He his now tied with Jeremiah Sirles for the most starts by a Nebraska offensive lineman in a season. Benhart was the only other Husker offensive lineman to start all 12 games this season.

- Safety Isaac Gifford made a career-high-tying 11 tackles in the game, matching his 11 tackles last season against Georgia Southern. This marked his ninth game with at least seven tackles this season and third career double-digit tackle game.

- Gifford increased his season tackle total to 86, becoming the first Husker defensive back with at least 80 tackles since Nathan Gerry in 2014.

- Safety Phalen Sanford finished with a career-high nine tackles, all in the first half. His previous high was six tackles against Purdue and Illinois earlier this season

- Nebraska held Iowa scoreless in the first quarter, marking the eighth opponent Nebraska has shut out in the first quarter in 2023. Nebraska finished the regular season, allowing only 23 first-quarter points

Bummer of an end to the season

But great improvement on the defensive side of the ball this year. If we get our offense (staff and players) to focus on the details, we can do something.

Lots of sour grapes and drunk keyboard tears today- I know I’d be there if had another IPA, but all in all, I’m weirdly pleased with the overall direction of this team.

The physicality will pay dividends in years two and three. Frankly I’m surprised it was as impactful as it was this year, year one.

The lack of ball control is absolutely baffling. The clock management was cringeworthy. But core physicality at the point of attack was outstanding. The constant supply of new players stepping up into the limelight was fantastic.

I’d love to see us trade our TE coach for a qb coach (sorry Josh. Maybe you are great and I’m highlighting my lack of knowledge here) but it seems like we do need to tweak a few things at QB.

But overall, great to see the blackshirts back. And for those crying, thinking this train isn’t heading in the right direction, sober up and hop on board the bandwagon. Now or in October. There is plenty of room.

Pot Roast

We can talk all day long about Coach White, but IMO the 2023 defense was what they were because of the dudes up front. It wasn't just the starters either, he quietly built some serious depth that we're going to enjoy for the next couple years.

Robinson & Hutmacher went from guys that hadn't reached their potential, nor did they come close then BOOM - both had big, breakout seasons.

Tip of the cap to this cat, he's earned every penny - and some - from his contract.

Major Props to Us

Let’s give a hand to us Husker fans who endured this chaotic shit show for the last 13 weeks. We kept tuning in to the fumbling bumbling mess that has become Nebraska football.
Clock mismanagement that you would expect from a junior high coach, to inexplicable fumbles or interceptions that defy logic, to penalties and special teams blunders at the most inopportune times, we pulled it off.

We saw it all and we’re still here.

See you in 2024!
