RVP, James Williams, and other observations

Just a couple of thoughts. It was interesting to see Van Poppel play. That's his 3rd game, I believe. I was surprised to see him, but they must have made the decision that they needed to play him in this game against a good running offense to shut them down and get this win.

James Williams is an awesome story. I don't know what happened to his family, but the interview after the game was pretty intense. It's impressive what he has done. He's a sophomore and is the best pass rusher we've had since Randy Gregory. He's going to make serious waves by the time he's done at NU.

No Carter Nelson was a surprise. No Gabe Ervin, that I saw. I actually liked the RB rotation, for the most part, for just about the first time all season.

Special Teams need a new leader. The punt protection team and field goal team are bad. The coverage teams are average. Return teams are very average. Foley needs to go.

Football Nebraska's defense came to play Saturday against Rutgers

"I thought it was as great a defensive performance that I've been around," Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said postgame of his defense, which held its fifth opponent in the past six games to 10 or fewer points.

Recruiting Couple recruiting notes coming out of the visit weekend

I've been gathering reactions and interviews from recruits today, look for that piece either tonight or tomorrow morning on what some of the top recruits in attendance had to say about their time in town. For now, here's some notes on a prospect that didn't make it into town and some surprise visitors that made it into town.

- First off, check out my story on 2027 four-star QB Trae Taylor, who was offered while in town yesterday. Nebraska's going to be a serious contender there moving forward.

Login to view embedded media - 2026 Jackson (Minn.) County Central athlete Roman Voss made the trip down with his parents and coaching staff to see the game on Saturday. He's got offers from the likes of Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and Kansas State to date, Nebraska could join the mix soon. A source close to him believes the Huskers would "definitely be high on his list" if they were to offer

- 2026 Derby (Kan.) three-star offensive lineman Maxwell Robinson didn't make it into Lincoln yesterday. Huskers are monitoring but they haven't offered yet and I'm not sure if they will.

Login to view embedded media - 2026 Prior Lake (Minn.) High offensive tackle Ethan Beckman, a gargantuan 6-foot-5, 330 pound prospect made the drive down to Nebraska. He's on the Huskers radar with offers from Kansas State and Iowa State to date. Name to keep an eye on. Wasn't on the initial visitor list, bit of a surprise he made it into town.

Login to view embedded media - 2026 St Louis (Mo.) Christian Brothers College athlete Nick McClellan, brother of Oregon freshman WR Jeremiah McClellan, made the six hour drive to see the Huskers on Saturday. Young McClellan could play wide receiver or defensive back at the next level with offers from Missouri and Kansas State to date. Huskers are monitoring.

Login to view embedded media - 2026 Greenwood (Ark.) three-star athlete Champ Davis popped up on the sideline before the game. He started his career at Omaha (Neb.) North and landed an offer from Nebraska while there, communication has dropped off a good bit between both sides, but he felt right back at home yesterday and was welcomed in. We'll see how much the Huskers engage moving forward but good to see a former local prospect pop back up in town.

Login to view embedded media - 2027 Clear Lake (Ia.) athlete Jaxson McIntire projects to safety at the next level, he's on the radar of programs like Iowa, Kansas State and Nebraska, with an early offer from Iowa State. He made the drive into Lincoln to see the game, I believe his first at Memorial Stadium. Another somewhat surprising visitor, but one the staff is keeping an eye on.

- Nebraska had a couple intriguing 2028 prospects from the Kansas City area. Lee's Summit (Mo.) West offensive lineman Brock Barrows, a name I mentioned way back in the spring as a young prospect to get to know, he stands 6-foot-3, 270 pounds as a freshman. Raymore-Peculiar (Mo.) wide receiver Jeremiah Hull stands 6-foot-5, 175 pounds as a freshman (!!!) and could eventually grow into a tight end or stick at wideout. He looked every bit of his size on the sideline. 2028 Blue Valley (Kan.) Northwest athlete Baron Marshall already holds an offer from Auburn and made the trip into Lincoln. Good crop of young talent the Huskers are in on already.

Welcome to Rutgers Week

Rutgers, coming off a hard fought 21-18 victory over Washington, is well positioned for success.

Kyle Monangai is our primary running back and has been mentioned as a possible Heisman Candidate. He is supported by Sam Brown, who is a bruiser. Monangai had 132 rushing yards vs Washington and Brown had 44 yards rushing with a 37 yard burst for a touchdown.

The OL and running back are the heart and soul of this team. LT #72 Hollín Pierce is an All American Candidate. LG #65 Felter is an All Conference Candidate as is C Zilinskas. Not a coincidence that our biggest runs have been towards the left side of the line or up the middle. RG Kobe Asamosh has played some, but is going to need time to acclimate, but will be a good player someday. RT Robert Needham is a Monster Right Tackle, who has bolstered our run game, while providing better pass protection.

The quarterback, Athan Kaliakmanis, is capable of throwing accurately and making the easy throws. I’m looking for a 58% completion percentage from him with 20TDs and 7 ints. Thus far, he is over 60%.

He will be supported by an exceptionally talented WR Corp. Dymere Miller is a true WR1, is fast and has exceptional hands. Ian Strong is a future Superstar, capable of dominating opposing DBs. Chris Long has had issue with injuries, but has demonstrated big play ability when healthy. 6’6” Korey Duff is a True Freshman acclimating to this level of play.

TE Kenny Fletcher will be the primary tight end, and has been productive, leading all receivers with 16 receptions. The rest of the tight ends are a question mark, but hopefully some emerge. Konopka has been used in situations where a 2nd TE was needed.

Rutgers Defense has limited opponents scoring to 23 points or fewer.

Malcolm Ray is the Nose Tackle, and he is backed up by 315 lb NT Zaire Angoy, anchoring the middle of the defensive line. Ray is complemented by future NFL starter, DT Kyonte Hamilton. They are sandwiched by a pair of All American potential Ends in Aaron Lewis and Wesley Bailey.

The Linebackers are the heart and soul of the defense. Tyreem Powell is an All American and Butkus award Candidate. Lost to injury is Mohamed Toure, who was very productive last year. He is replaced by Dariel Djabome. Desmond Igbinosun plays a hybrid LB-DB position and was exceptionally productive last year, with 64 tackles and 6.5 tfl.

The secondary could also be the nations best, with Flip Dixon and Shaquan Loyal vying for All American honors. As will Robert Longerbeam, who has slowly but surely built himself into one of the best DBs in the game. The other CB is Eric Rogers, who has played very well this year. Bo Mascoe is the nickel back.

Jai Patel is the Kicker and Jakob Anderson is the Punter.

Last year, we had too many deficiencies. This year, there are few, if any. Looking forward to our game Saturday.

2 more wins on the schedule

If this is how the defense will play, I only see 2 more wins. Purdue and UCLA are wins. tOSU and USC losses. Everything else are toss ups and if the defense implodes like it did tonight and last week, mark the rest as losses. Not panicking about 1 game, but the last 2 games the offenses dictated to the defense and picked them apart. Tony needs to rethink his approach, he had no answers for what was going on and out coached the last 2 games.

Tony stunk up the joint tonight. I think Altmyer was 21-26 and 3TD's. Gonna be a long conference schedule.
