Danny K to the portal

Bummed about this. I was hoping we had a guy that in DK that was willing to bide a bit of time and be ready to take the reigns as a RS Junior.

Doubt that will happen much any more.
Can’t blame him I guess but I think he could learn a lot from Dana.

The portal is going to make it hard to stack talent via the traditional recruiting route. A kid like Kaelin can compete for a starting job at a lot of schools this coming year and next. He'll probably play a year earlier somewhere else.

Agreed. Similar to Malachi if you are the big time QB that you think you are, you should tear up Nebraska Football. Was a decent player, but didn't ever set the world on fire. MACtion is probably where it is at.
He had offer to Mizzou that he committed to first, I think if he goes to MAC or CUSA or AAC he will end up back at a higher level

Maybe I honestly know 0 about his talent and readiness

This is why in my opinion every year you recruit 1 qb and 1 rb no matter what. If you find a diamond then it can change your program. But most QBs aren't staying there more than a year or two. And when you find a special RB they can start almost immediately.

Too bad. He would have been a good fit in DH's offense. But I'm sure he wants to play now.

Disappointed by this one more than the others. I have assumed with the redshirt he was in line to start at least two seasons if his development went as planned. I thought he would at least wait until after the spring to see where he was on the depth chart.

he progressed in practice this year, and this is simply a matter of not wanting to wait behind raiola for at least 2 more years. He may go somewhere to wait a single year or compete for a job. He knows he cant compete with raiola, thats no knock most QBs cant.

Raiola is staying. I was wrong, but you can also thank me for my reverse jinx haha.

This is the new normal. Honestly, no one should get excited about freshmen QBs. Few will stay at their schools and develop for 3 years and start as seniors. But this is also true of coaching staffs. They are going to look in the portal more and more for qbs. Its an interesting dynamic going forward.

What was a bigger surprise to me than his portal announcement was reconfirming to NU again after Raiola committed and he announced he would be reopening his recruitment. Either the gap between him and Raiola is bigger than he thought, or he overestimated his abilities to compete and earning playing time. Did he really think he wouldn't be riding the pine for at least a couple of years when he recommitted?

Assuming Raiola sticks around to see what Holgerson cooks up, Kaelin is mop up duty for at least two years, and then he gets to compete with Lateef and a QB Dana lands next year. He must’ve decided he didn’t like his chances.

Honestly know little about the kid or his talent. I mean he was a true freshman on the bench. And was never likely to unseat the golden child. The biggest sting I think is I'd like to see Haarberg move full time to TE.
