We need Trev as our AD. He gets it. Nebraska football needs to get back on the right track. I can't imagine Trev as are AD today or for that matter Iowa he would of went nuts. This is Nebraska and totally unacceptable

What he did to the wrestling program at UNO was shady. Too shady.

I'm not a fan of Eichorst, but we don't need a "Nebraska guy". Steve Pedersen was a Nebraska guy, and that didn't turn out well.

Getting into the Summit and having a shot at the NCAA basketball tournament was bigger than keeping a non revenue Wrestling program, that is why they made the move.
It's not so much that he got rid of the wrestling program. It's how he went about it.

Only if Trev promises to immediately fire all the carpetbaggers and hire Scott Frost as the head FB coach, Eric Piatkowski for BB, Rulon Gardner for wrestling and Sarah Pavan for volleyball. Erstad? He can stay.

And he should create a varsity bobsled team and make Curt Tomasevicz the head coach.

The summit does not outlaw wrestling, especially a powerhouse that was winning multiple national championships. The wrestling program was not costing uno a dime. I sorta get dropping football, maybe, but what he did to Denney and Company was beyond criminal.

I have been a life long Husker fan, but if Trev ever takes over I will never spend another dime, or watch another Husker activity.

The Husker wrestling team had a great day today... I will write a summary in the next day or two.

As I read this thread I come to several conclusions:

1. We don't need to hire a former Husker as an AD.

2. We do need to hire a former Husker as an AD.

3. A former Husker coach got us into this mess.

4. A former Husker coach was wildly successful and we should follow his blueprint.

5. We need to fire the current AD because he isn't dedicated to winning enough.

I am sure I am missing something somewhere.

How about we keep the AD we have? I rather like him. Our former AD hired Pelini. Our current one fired him. Hmmm... who made the better choice?

The verdict on Riley is still out. But how about we wait and see what he can do over the next 3 years before we start rolling severed heads down the temple steps again?

Didn't Trev get rid of football at UNO? No way he would do that at Lincoln? (Just kidding)

Yeah, like Trev actually made all those decisions he's being blamed for here by himself and carried them out, by himself.

I'm sure he wasn't hired to do exactly what he did.He just decided to kill those programs off all on his own because he's such a jerk, Riiiight.

Can't have both, simultaneously, man.

This is just my opinion, but after next year (and next recruiting class), Riley will have shown me what he can do. Unlike Pelini, we have nearly three decades of head coaching history to utilize as well. Last season and this season are certainly consistent with his historically erratic trend.

I think you can have both... for now. It is just waaaay too early to pull the plug on Riley, no matter how many doubts you and I share about him.
I am anxiously waiting to see how our recruiting ends this year. Riley has now shown, both here and at OSU, that even if he is a good coach, he is not the kind of coach who can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. He needs better talent in order to get us over the hump. Sooooo.... recruiting is EVERYTHING. So in my view his future here will rise or fall based on how well he can recruit

So long as you are asking for me (or other posters) to judge whether Eichorst or Osborne made the better choice, we cannot do so if the jury is still deliberating on Riley.

On the field, Riley has done nothing yet to impress me. 6 wins. 9 wins. Recruiting stagnating. I'm sorry that I cannot be a rah-rah supporter. I measure the efficacy of a coach on wins and losses.

When rating a head coach, I care about the results on the field - not whether they or the players smile more and volunteer at Matt Talbot's soup kitchen. We've had innumerable injuries, an academic suspension (from a team captain, no less), off-the-field incidents, etc. But the clan that rules this board blames it all on Riley's predecessor.

You know, I may be more rah-rah if it was apparent we were doing something to resolve the issue of talent deficiency, and, yay, we had a bunch of high-rated recruits visit Lincoln. Yet, few have signed or likely will sign with NU. That's a problem.

I agree with almost everything you say here. But I disagree with you linking together the Pelini firing with the Riley hiring. Two separate issues. Firing Pelini was, in my view, absolutely the right thing to do. But hiring Riley? The verdict is still out. I was disappointed when we hired him. Then grew to really like him and his hiring. I still think he needs more time before we can judge him. But... I totally agree with your fears concerning recruiting. Very worrisome

No doubt-- he's responsible for Solich and Pelini
Not saying either are our benchmark - but going off average wins (and the fact neither Solich or Pelini were HC prior):

Solich: 9.6 wins/season
Pelini: 9.6 wins/season
Riley: 7.5 wins/season at Nebraska; 7.75 wins over 12 seasons at Oregon State

At the moment, who looks worse? Osborne or Eichorst?

And you keep leaving out that solich was gifted a national title team and many quality players. Bo was gifted many NFL players and the greatest defensive player in NU history from Callahan. Riley was gifted Bo's lazy recruiting efforts. Factor that in your wins and losses.

unbelievable.. from the guy who brought you 3 national championships
We ALL honor and respect what Dr. Tom did here as a coach. He was one of the all time greats like Bear Bryant and others. But being a great coach is far different from being a great AD who knows how to pick head coaches. You would think a great head coach would have an eye and a talent for picking other great head coaches. But he clearly does not. And in the case of Solich I think what we saw was friendship and loyalty and a desire to keep the coaching staff intact, trump his better judgment.

Nebraska's football program would have changed and probably got to this point no matter who was named HC after Osborne retired, and that's evident by many programs who lost a great coach and then went on to be good for awhile, then average.

Honestly don't know if in 1998 there was a coach out there you could guarantee Osborne like results for a decade or more had another coach been hired at UNL. In some ways, Nebraska's biggest fault under Osborne was the massive success in the 1980's and 1990's, a hard act to follow that most coaches couldn't come close to replicating. And no one of substance really wanted to take a stab at it after Solich was let go.

Some day, Nebraska will get "that" coach again, until then, we have to hope Mike Riley can keep this team in the 9/10 win zip code and build more quality depth and get a few difference makers along the way. Year three with Riley is going to be interesting to say the least, this is where the rubber truly meets the road in 2017.

Respectfully disagree. In 1998 Nebraska was coming off of the greatest five year run in the history of college football. We were the undisputed kings of the sport and the envy of every other program in the country.
We could have had ANY coach we wanted from the college ranks and probably even some very good pro coaches.

Osborne deliberately cut the AD out of the process by preemptively announcing the Solich hire as part of his retirement announcement. Osborne did NOT want a national search for the best coach. He did NOT want to run the risk of having the AD pick an "outsider" who would bring in his own staff and let go the current staff. For Osborne it was not about finding the best coach possible. It was about loyalty and solidifying "his way" as the only way forward. It was his way of extending his own legacy beyond his retirement by picking someone who would not change a thing.

Solich' Asst were getting older and uncle Milt couldn't get on a plane to recruit.. The saying of it ain't broke don't fix it applies so Osborne having Solich to succeed him made sense..

Before TO hired Bo plenty of the Nebraska fan base wanted Peelini to be the next head coach after Solich was fired...

We're in this mess as well because of how Pederson handled his hiring choice.

No doubt the Solich downfall had a lot to do with recruiting and an aging staff. But Osborne should have seen his aging staff as the liability it became.
But yeah... Pederson is the biggest villain here
I still hold that firing Solich was a mistake, even if he wasn't the best coach we could have gotten in 98
