Trev Alberts

And you keep leaving out that solich was gifted a national title team and many quality players. Bo was gifted many NFL players and the greatest defensive player in NU history from Callahan. Riley was gifted Bo's lazy recruiting efforts. Factor that in your wins and losses.
I'm sure someone is bored/nerdy enough to subjectively factor in "gifted a national title team and many quality players," and, "gifted many NFL players." Why is there always a caveat? Wins are wins, and losses are losses. Why is it that only the previous coaches were gifted?

On a similar note, Riley was the benefactor of better recruiting classes, too. Both at Nebraska, and during his early years at Oregon State. One merely has to look at Oregon State's recruiting record during his tenure to confirm.

But wait, it is really difficult to recruit at Oregon State (not denying that), so just think of what he will do at Nebraska! Are you seeing those newfound advantages reaping any benefits as of yet? I'm not.

If we somehow manage to sign a top 15 class, I promise to ease off Riley - as the only way to overcome talent deficiencies is to recruit, yes, better talent. But a top 15 class likely will not happen.

And many on this board will somehow, somehow find a way to blame it all on Osborne, Solich, and Pelini. Are you serious? How delusional are you?

How about we keep the AD we have? I rather like him. Our former AD hired Pelini. Our current one fired him. Hmmm... who made the better choice?

I agree with most of what you post, but not this. First, SE fired Pelini because he had no choice, the fans and boosters were done with the Pelini Circus. More importantly, SE's hire of Riley was not based upon an in-depth evaluation of candidates and selection of an individual most likely to have success at NU (which you would expect of a guy paid $1 million a year solely to hire quality coaches). It was based upon his desire to hire the opposite of BP so that he wouldn't have to wipe spit off of his desk after each sit-down meeting. The purported reason for Riley's prior five-year record of 29-33 was the result of Oregon State's poor facilities, but that was nothing more than speculation, it may have just as easily been the result of a staff that couldn't recruit or coach.

I hope that Riley succeeds and he should be given some time to bring in his recruits and implement his system, but I am not optimistic that he is the guy.

I am not on the "fire Riley now!" Bandwagon. I really, really want him to succeed and think we should give him time to do so. Coaching carousels are a bad thing and I am looking forward to next year. This year is done.

That said... I am also tired of the "it is Pelini's fault" crowd and their endless excuse making for this staff. No, we do not yet have top tier talent. And we have some holes in our roster (DE). BUT what I saw yesterday and against Iowa was a very poorly coached football team that is very unsound in fundamentals.

Our linebackers were just horrifically awful. Beyond wretched. Their talent level may not be great, but come on folks... I have seen 2 star Juco players starting for Troy play better than that.
And what can you say about the coaching on our offensive line when we can't manage shit in our running game against a historically hideous Tennessee rush defense?

So what gives? Are our coaches doing a great job but the players are still so filled with Pelini's botulism that they don't care? I ain't buying that trope anymore.

In other words, as I peruse this board I see two camps emerging. Those that defend Riley and blame our struggles on Pelini. And those that are critical of Riley and seem unwilling to cut him any slack at all.

I find myself in mild agreement with both camps. But mostly I am just confused and sad. The program I grew up watching has vanished. Now I find myself happy in big games so long as we don't get blown out. Gone is any hope that we will be a real contender for any kind of title anytime soon. And currently our recruiting is looking pretty iffy.

I have no idea what the future of NU football is at this point. None.

So I just have to hope that Riley really will turn this around. Hope that next year and beyond will be better

Good summary. I hope MR gets us to championships, but I'm not accepting excuses.

Hurts to admit it, but this is a good description of the current state of the program.

I think the vast majority of fans are in both camps. Not really sure I know anyone that thinks Riley is doing no wrong and it is all Bo's fault. I think most fans realize there are still problems from when Bo was in charge that resonated through this year.

I really wish some people would quit polarizing this stuff and realize only the nuts are on the far fringe and those are the ones the most vocal.

No doubt the Solich downfall had a lot to do with recruiting and an aging staff. But Osborne should have seen his aging staff as the liability it became.
But yeah... Pederson is the biggest villain here
I still hold that firing Solich was a mistake, even if he wasn't the best coach we could have gotten in 98

Solich slowly made changes and should have made them quicker but it's hard firing people that made this program so successful. Firing Bohl and hiring Pelini was one of his first big hiring he made.

Nebraska might not have won a conference CCG with Solich, we won't know but I can guarantee you we would have not had 2 losing seasons of the 4 years Pederson's Cally was here.

I realize that you are just looking for someone else to argue with, but if you really believe that then watch this interview with SE after the hire.

Not looking to argue with anyone. I'm aware of his process, and the diligence behind it. You're speculating, based on a video, from a preconceived notion.

What he did to the wrestling program at UNO was shady. Too shady.
But wasn't that part of an aggrement with Osborne to also cut the football program, in return for Nebraska not starting a hockey program? That's what the old "insiders" here told me.

Then please fill us in on the other candidates that SE evaluated and interviewed.

Only if Trev promises to immediately fire all the carpetbaggers and hire Scott Frost as the head FB coach, Eric Piatkowski for BB, Rulon Gardner for wrestling and Sarah Pavan for volleyball. Erstad? He can stay.

And he should create a varsity bobsled team and make Curt Tomasevicz the head coach.
Really the only way to success

I've heard that too as a possibility....

UNO should have a football program and it would be awesome to have a B1G hockey program to play in the vault.

Yup. It's true I tell ya. I totally believe that's what happened.

This is all 20/20 hindsight and a bit hypocritical on my part since I was happy at the time when Solich got fired, but I think the biggest value in keeping Solich and just asking him to revamp his staff, was that it would have kept our offensive identity intact. To me that was the biggest loss in all that has happened. We went away from our unique identity and our style of smashmouth, physical offense

Not disagreeing with you, because there is no excuse to not have a Hockey team except for women's sports to make up for Title IX.

Eichorst has really had no successes in his tenure. Our next AD needs to at least be familiar with the challenges of building a program with the challenges NU has. Don't care if he's a alum or not.

Riley needs 3 more years (barring a meltdown), but with an 8-4ish record next year Eichorst will be dead man walking.

I've had the same evolution. We threw the baby out with the bath water.

What I can't figure out is why a great coach and mind like Osborne would need to partner with Alberts. Was he afraid of UNO football overtaking the Huskers, and willing to sacrifice a hockey team because of it? That is the only logical reason there had to be a deal. And a deal it was.

one could easily say the exact same thing about Osborne's hire back in 2007.

Exactly. When are we going to get an AD who actually does his job and does frequent evaluations of potential replacement coaches and has the expertise to conduct an effective coaching search? Hiring a coach because you met him and liked him 10 years ago is no better than what we saw from TO and SP.

It's obvious to me Eichorst is that AD. Whether his hire gets the job done is remained to be seen.

People are already demanding and hoping that the exact process that everybody bitches about takes place with the next hire. For the life of me I cannot figure out why people refused to give this regime any semblance of support.
There have been stupid claims about the regime being "sent to ruin the program" from day 1. For God's sake people. Grow up. Use your brains and think for once. It's been 2 seasons full of people (and some of their own players) being against them.

Let's face it UNO needed Hockey revenue in a big way for their Athletic program to survive and UNO football program possibly would take away from Nebraska walk on program....

That is how I see what happend and why they made that deal.

I guess a deal is a deal. Gotta stick to the deal.

Pederson made two hires Callahan in football and Anderson in baseball.
Osborne hired Pelini for Football Erstad for Baseball and Smiling Miles for Basketball..
Eichorst hired Riley in Football and Amy Williams in Women's Basketball...

We will know in the next 3 years if Eichorst hires were successful and better than Osborne hires were.

Respectfully disagree. In 1998 Nebraska was coming off of the greatest five year run in the history of college football. We were the undisputed kings of the sport and the envy of every other program in the country.
We could have had ANY coach we wanted from the college ranks and probably even some very good pro coaches.

Osborne deliberately cut the AD out of the process by preemptively announcing the Solich hire as part of his retirement announcement. Osborne did NOT want a national search for the best coach. He did NOT want to run the risk of having the AD pick an "outsider" who would bring in his own staff and let go the current staff. For Osborne it was not about finding the best coach possible. It was about loyalty and solidifying "his way" as the only way forward. It was his way of extending his own legacy beyond his retirement by picking someone who would not change a thing.

I think you give Nebraska too much credit, and there's NO guarantee that whoever the "ANY" coach Nebraska could have gotten was going to continue the enormous success that the 80's and 90's had produced. And there are plenty of examples of damn good coaches who left a successful program for another only to land with a giant thud.

You think the AD at the time Osborne retired was capable of picking THE coach? Maybe he could have, but I sure as hell don't think he would.

Actually, Bill Byrne hired Mike Anderson.

Then he went to Texas A&M and hired the right guy.
