If we can keep DH, I think our offense looks kinda fun to be a part of.Now, before the end of the season, would be a great time to announce a multi-year deal for him. It would help with recruiting.

Ummm. DH is 53...That's Gen X buddy. Boomers don't hold a candle to us bad asses. You want a scary corollary?
Satt did not seem to be a ball-buster with his offense. A baby boomer comes in who gives zero shits about anyone's feelings, and BOOM! instant improvement.
Here's the corollary that should scare all of us: in the military basic training DI's would scream, insult and harass recruits to make them willing to charge up a hill under fire. Not now. In basic/boot, the recruits are able to report a DI who is demeaning to them, and the DI gets counseled and told to back off. God help us all.
I've posted this before, but I listened to a former NFL head coach comment on why coordinators kept getting recycled after being fired from jobs. He said, "calling plays is a unique talent that few coaches have" so guys who can do it get rehired. When you get to the NFL level there's quite a few who can do it, but they don't all have the same weapons as the other guys. In college there's a lot of guys who are calling plays that are just calling plays. Osborne was manipulating the defense with his play calling.I have more faith that McGuire can learn to be a good OC. Than Satt.
I’ll be sure to Google him.this is why I believe Troy Dannen might be our very own General von Steuben.
look him up, kids!
Holgerson is GenX.You want a scary corollary?

Probably true, but if you have a guy who has relationships with our WR recruits and current roster AND he now knows how you want them coached, it might be okay to keep him on board. I'm not invested in him staying or going. I'm just offering a different view.Usually you would babysit the GA's, not the position coach.
It’s less about what Holgerson wants, as anything NU pays Houston doesn’t. It’s really more about wants to do. Given the young talent, NU has a good chance of keeping him in Lincoln should he want to go big conference OC to re-enter the coaching ranks. They wanted him out of WVU a couple of years before he left, and Houston was a flame out for him. He probably isn’t a big program HC.For next season, the TE group will have Flint and Ingwerson added to the mix. WRs will hopefully add Bell from his injuries, along with Hall, McMorris, Lloyd, Keelan, Jacory, plus maybe a portal WR or two.
I do like the potential, especially if we keep Holgorsen.
after the bowl game the primary focus should be in retaining DH and giving him whatever he wants. Frankly, we can’t afford to lose him… as some have mentioned, I don’t know if we will get so lucky the next time around
What a calming influence DH has been to our fanbase.
WR coach had to go. RB too. OL can go to, since DR may not be all that.
Now it’s like, if DH is cool with it, then I am too.
Garrett let Neyor and Banks dominate the playing time without expectation of sharp routes and blocking on the perimeter. In steps DH, and that changes in two weeks. We need a real coach there, not a cheerleader.Probably true, but if you have a guy who has relationships with our WR recruits and current roster AND he now knows how you want them coached, it might be okay to keep him on board. When you tell them if you don't block, you don't play. Exhibit A. Thomas Fidone.
Apparently Banks likes to play. LOLOn a related note. I thought Banks blocked his ass off on Saturday.
Here's a good example.

Even when they don't make that great block, there will always be something to say about giving a maximum effort. DH is instilling the right frame of mind.
Unrelated, but even on that early swing pass to Jacori, Scott at Center fires off the ball and just misses blocking the LB on the backside, but continues to sprint upfield and still become part of the play. We haven't seen that kind of effort in forever. It's a mindset now.
He seems like a guy that goes balls to the walls weeks on end and then crashes. We need to give him plenty of time to decompress at strategic times during the year to avoid burnout. On a lighter note from 35:00 on Husker Onlinewe can keep DH, I think our offense looks kinda fun to be a part of.
Not disagreeing. I’m just saying that the new OC has set the standard now and he may like how our WR coach and his charges have responded to his demands. There’s lots of employers who are happy employing young people willing to accept how they want things done (me for one). The worst professional I ever hired was a guy with a doctorate who played guard for the ISU football team. He had been out of school a for about 5 years and thought he knew everything and could do whatever he wanted. Awful. He cost me tens of thousands of dollars. His wife who also worked for me finally said they had to quit because she couldn’t work with him…. He was an imbecile.Garrett let Neyor and Banks dominate the playing time without expectation of sharp routes and blocking on the perimeter. In steps DH, and that changes in two weeks. Sounds like he was overeducated for his intelligence. Not disagreeing. Make Dana the highest paid offensive assistant in college football and we make that decision a lot harder and perhaps hold off the desire for him to pursue a head coaching position. It also makes the position much more attractive for potential suitors should there come the need.Bolded. I've been thinking of this. IF/When DH moves on, does Rhule's rolodex come up with someone comparable, or a Satt clone? Things that make you go hmmmmm.
OL is a unit that's impacted by coaching more than any other position group. In most circumstances, the expectation should be that assistant coaches get 2 years to prove they're worth a shit.3 years with HIS recruits means you're not going to judge him until after he's been here for 4 years (following the '25 season).
because he, of course, didn't sign a single kid in his first year on the job.
maybe that's fair.
Right, when I mean whatever he wants… that means non monetary. What we actually pay him is meaningless really since it just offsets what Houston pays him. It’s less about what Holgerson wants, as anything NU pays Houston doesn’t. It’s really more about wants to do. Given the young talent, NU has a good chance of keeping him in Lincoln should he want to go big conference OC to re-enter the coaching ranks. I think it proves Holgersen is an offensive genius more than anything, while Donovan is a mediocre assistant who is only as good as the guy above him. The offensive line has looked light years better the last two weeks. That's completely due to DH's influence.I get what you're saying, I really do, and I think that while the line has improved in pass pro, it sucks balls in the run game. Part of my point is that in two games DH has game planned/raised hell with all the offense, and the line has looked better since he arrived. It's too early to tell if his presence on the team and his play calling has improved the line. But if the line looks really good the next two games (and this is the point I was trying to make) then you could argue that the mediocre line play was due to Satt's game plan and in-game play calling, not Donovan's coaching.
I've flipped on Uncle Donnie. I think he's shown enough to stay. The WR and RB coaches I'd rather see go, but like you said, I'll defer to what DH wants. What a calming influence DH has been to our fanbase.

It was always there. Dana said right away after a few practices that he was pleasantly surprised with our O line. He liked their pad level and technique. I’ve heard zero criticism from him about the O line other than the screwed up snap counts which it sounds like we’re on our center. On the other hand he has had lots to say about routes, perimeter blocking and hitting holes.I think it proves Holgersen is an offensive genius more than anything, while Donovan is a mediocre assistant who is only as good as the guy above him. The offensive line has looked light years better the last two weeks. That's completely due to DH's influence.
Banks had the most important block on that play. Which proves that the guy can block, it only took 10 games and a DH kick in the rear to make him do it. Which is why I don't understand why you would want to keep the guy around who couldn't get him to play worth a shit when he was an all-conference type player at his last school. On a related note. I thought Banks blocked his ass off on Saturday.
Here's a good example.
It’s not about what we want. It’s about how he’s coaching now and whether or not Dana likes the job he’s doing now. What came before Dana got here is now irrelevant if Dana stays.Banks had the most important block on that play. EJ did just enough to spring that. It's the little things that make a huge difference.Check our EJ's effort on that same play. This was the play after he had a long run on the screen pass.
I've already said that. Whatever Dana wants I'm good with in the end. But given the disparaging marks about our WR and RB play, I'd be surprised if Dana actually wants those position coaches to stick around. It’s not about what we want. It’s about how he’s coaching now and whether or not Dana likes the job he’s doing now. What came before Dana got here is now irrelevant if Dana stays.
If Dana stays, I'm on board for whatever coaches are retained. Maybe Dana loves that total hands on approach as a OC? It looks like those coaches are gonna comply (or try) to comply with whatever Dana is demanding. It definitely looks like a lot players have bought into Dana's method of teaching and expectations. Those players that haven't bought in, or lack the physical/mental ability to do those things Dana expects will be passed over. As it should be.It’s not about what we want. It’s about how he’s coaching now and whether or not Dana likes the job he’s doing now. What came before Dana got here is now irrelevant if Dana stays.
The coordinators and the head coach have a big impact on how well assistant coaches perform, that's absolutely true. But if your unit has straight up sucked ass for 9 games, and going into last year too, I don't believe that warrants a fresh start with two games left to evaluate. The major reason I support keeping Donovan around is his unit was actually showing improvement before DH even got here. This isn't a program where subpar coaches should be cutting their teeth. All of the assistants on that side of the ball have been here for two years and that was plenty of time to show something by now if they were actually worth keeping around. The OC needs to be the big picture guy that sees how the pieces come together. He needs to direct his assistants, not defer to them. Otherwise, everybody can look bad. So I feel like the assistants should get a fresh eyes evaluation just like the players.
After Iowa, DH gets 15 bowl practices to learn which coaches/players are rising to the occasion. Hopefully that’s all the coaches and all the best players. I am hoping we that we look impressive offensively in the bowl game.
I tend to agree. DH critiqued the WR and RB room specifically, so they could be on their way out.The coordinators and the head coach have a big impact on how well assistant coaches perform, that's absolutely true.
