Portal news thread

I believe we’re going to start seeing consequences.

Hope so, but if the consequences are a slap on the wrist. Losing a handful of scholarships, coach suspended for a few games or god forbid a public reprimand… Nobody will stop or change a thing.

Seems like every other team in America has players announcing they are entering the portal. Curious why nothing for NU?
The issue perhaps is that Rhule has done a good job of telling guys to look before you leap. I was listening to sports talk this week and the guest indicated the number of players who enter the portal who draw no interest or who end up actually downgrading their opportunities. Hausmann went to a better team but played less than he would this year. Myles Farmer left and played less and is back in the portal. Say what you want about the quality of play in the past year, there are not alot of guys on this roster who seem bent on ego chasing.

There SHOULD be some guys leaving because they will get told that they are not going to play so they will (possibly) want to move on.

when corporations have voluntary severance packages, it's generally the good people that leave because they have someplace in mind or solidified. the underperforming seldom leave.

THIS could get interesting. There’s enough have not schools pussed about losing their top players to tampering schools that I actually think the NCAA is going to be forced to rein it in. That usually involves making an example out of a few over zealous programs.
If the NCAA doesn't come down hard on MeCheatin, then we should disregard the rules as a program too.

Do we wanna win? Or just be "good citizen" type of program?

I'm guessing we haven't had anybody hit the portal yet because most of our players aren't good enough to play at another Power 5 program. Rhule is going to have to tell some of them to move on.

OR maybe guys who are contributing enough are already getting paid enough to keep them. The guys I worry the most about are true freshmen.

Good point, but also, there is another portal season in the Spring, though that’s the lesser one. Either way, we need 20 guys to move on… that’s a lot

Most likely because they are/were waiting for their post season meeting with the coaches to be completed. And it's not December 4 yet.

I believe some of the meeting were today. Hundreds of players have already announced their intention to transfer so not sure why December 4th would matter.

FWIW, I heard the President of Michigan University speak on the radio today. He assured the people in Michigan he had spoken with Harbaugh and Harbaugh told him he had nothing to do with it and no knowledge of it happening. The president said he fully believes Harbaugh because he's a very honest and upstanding person of integrity. So there you have it from the Michigan brass. :)

We'll see how it shakes out for Nebraska but I do think one of the advantages Rhule brings is that kids actually like playing for his team once they're here. In contrast Coach Prime is all flash so he starts off fast in the recruiting trail but then they're disillusioned once they get on the team and find out how he does things and can turn around and throw players/coaches under the bus and run them off. Culture matters and it's become far more important in the days of the portal.

I guess good for him, but this is getting stupid. It's college football. The average age of an NFL player is just over 26. I hate this.
He should be completing a Ph.D. next season. Only slightly kidding. It will happen someday soon.

It’s only a matter of time before someone sues to keep playing college football you Can play as long as you want
And this is why, although I am a free market lover, the rules for the free marlet dont really apply here altogether. Essentially the NCAA is the business, and as the business they get to set parameters, requirements, and pay scales. You cant just gp get anyone to play quarterback, they have to be accepted and enrolled students.

What’s his price tag? NCAA has to do something with this. I’ve read where NILcollective donations aren’t tax deductible but I imagine companies that hire players for promotions are deducting this as marketing expense. The IRS could slow this down by disallowing or limiting expenses for businesses making direct payments.

Probably wrong but I thought NIL donations couldn't be used as a tax write-off.

Collective donations can not. A business though that hires a guy to do promotion work can probably deduct it. The HVAC company in Omaha that hired Decoldest and now Nash to do radio ads should be able to deduct that as a legitimate business expense. Some company giving a QB a million and the kid doesn’t do anything for the money is probably going to get their tit in a wringer with the IRS. Expenses have to be normal and reasonable.
