Most Improved OL's

I mean, one could look at it that way and the logic is pretty sound. But it really doesn’t account for the fact that our NFL caliber starting QB is also his(Donnie’s) nephew. If there wasn’t strong connection between our best player and our O-line coach your logic would be a lot harder to poke wholes. JMO
Did being Uncle Donnie help with the retention? Sure. But when he retained Raiola, he said Donnie just kept coming into work while the others were at home waiting to be fired and that he and Raiola have the same approach and philosophy to coaching OL. If Rhule has a competent line coach who he is sympatico with in terms of coaching approach, that stands on its own. That he is the uncle of two very good young QBs had something to do with him being in Lincoln in the first place, and advantaged him in being retained during the coaching transition. And rather than there being something wrong with that, it’s actually a bonus for the program.

Celebrating 4th place, what a winning attitude.

When your son tells you he was some gals 4th choice to go to prom with, I’m sure it will be a family celebration.
4th place with 18 teams. So you don’t want a top 4 OT in the conference at his position? Admit you enjoy a shitty football team. It explains why you’re pathetically bitter all the time. And even if my son gets to be the 4th pick for prom, it’s a better result than the dude you chose to bring that bent you over that night and left you with his cum seeping out of you on your walk of shame home so your dad and uncle could get their 2nd round of the day on your freshly lubricated booty hole.

hilarious from the guy celebrating mediocrity.

I bet the 4 pt loss to Ohio State was your favorite game this year
Never celebrated. You couldn’t find me celebrating it if your life depended on it. Pointed out the fact he’s a 2x HM All-Conference player. Sorry it hurts you so much to see a crappy player get selected for it. Makes you feel even worse about yourself.

Yes, losing to rivals because of complete breakdowns doesn’t feel good to me.

Guess I’m just a more invested fan than you.

Sure, let’s not celebrate and acknowledge the VERY FEW people who even get HM all conference selections from our terrible offense, let alone the team of overall. Sounds like you’d rather us have no HM at all. Makes a lot of sense. I’m not here toting them to be 1st round picks, but the negative pricks like you want to discredit ANYTHING remotely positive. So really, I’d say it’s you that’s a wimp and I’m laughing at you.
This thread is about how amazing of a coach Donnie is and he’s just not. There’s no need to be negative but there’s no reason to lie either. Let’s not blow smoke. So let’s not brag about a jump when the bar is low and continues to be low. Let’s not brag about HM “because very few people get that and it’s weally, weally , hard to do dat?”

Very few people get a chance to play college football, doesn’t mean I can’t criticize. Crap, does your wife always keep your balls in her purse or do you get to use them on holidays.

I’m not the one claiming there were 10 OT recognized as HM. I figured you wouldn’t back up you claim with facts.
1. Melvin Priestly, OT, Illinois
2. Carter Smith, OT, Indiana
3. Beau Stephens, OT, Iowa
4. Mason Richman, OT, Iowa
5. Myles Hinton, OT, Michigan
6. Luke Newman, OT, Michigan State
7. Caleb Tiernan, OT, Northwestern
8. Josh Thompson, OT, Northwestern
9. Josh Fryar, OT, Ohio State
10. Josh Simmons, OT, Ohio State
11. Anthony Donkoh, OT, Penn State
12. Marcus Mbow, OT, Purdue
13. Elijah Paige, OT, USC
14. Jack Nelson, OT, Wisconsin

15. Bryce Benhart, OT, Nebraska

you were right, @OzzyLvr. there weren't 10 honorable mention OTs in the B1G. there were 15, including Benhart.

thanks for keeping me honest

Did anyone say Raiola is an amazing OL coach? I didn't. Tenopir and Callahan were/are amazing OL coaches. What are the opinions of Rhule and Holgerson regarding Raiola. Rhule and Raiola come from the same approach to coaching the OL, and Rhule has stated publicly that he values Raiola as a member of the staff. Line play under Raiola has improved.

Some young guys poised to make a move. Brix, Taumua, etc
M*A*S*H* unit

Corcoran’s hamstring injury “never quite healed” which led him to have surgery from a specialist “a couple weeks ago.” Rhule said “we’re hopeful he’ll be back at some point.”

Prochazka, who tore an ACL last August and has had three season-ending injuries in four years, is “right on pace."

Gottula, who stepped into the Big Ten fire as a redshirt freshman and started nine games while not appearing to be overwhelmed, “had his shoulder done.”

Along the interior, Henry Lutovsky, who took over for Micah Mazzccua at right guard and made 11 starts, “had surgery.”

Rhule also mentioned Tyler Knaak, a lineman who can play both guard and tackle, had surgery, too. In this case, Rhule was willing to say Knaak “should be back for the spring.”

We don't quite know much about how Taumua's 2024 went as he spent parts of it injured.

And if they make that move some on here will find reasons why Donovan had little to do with it. Group think at its finest.
Convinced that Raiola is no bueno and if only they would hire (never coming to Lincoln/has an Oline approach not sympatico with Rhule/not as good as they think he is). Fun fact - Milt Tenopir began coach Oline at NU at age 34 and it was several years before he began building the legendary lines that NU is known, even though I'm sure he was a very good coach from the beginning of his tenure. Tenopir's coaching experience before that? High schools in Kansas.

Matt Rhule is 70-83 which = .4575 winning percentage. That’s over 12 years as head coach. He’s made a lot of mistakes to get to that mark. Please explain to me again that Matt Rhule is perfect and he couldn’t possibly be making a mistake with Donnie. I mean we’ve seen how awesome the other offensive coaches have been.

By the way my puppy just pissed all over the floor. I am so happy, he used to piss on the couch. What an improvement!!! 😒

Rhule corrected some mistakes this past season. He values Raiola as a coach and has said that several times. You think he’s mistaken. Why would I substitute his judgement for yours?

They absolutely improved in pass pro. Not sure how that can even be questioned.

Too many variables to actually know this...Dylan rarely stayed in the true pocket, and rarely had a conventional drop and throw, almost as if he was trained to be aware of pass protection problems and to throw off of his back foot and to short yardage check-downs. We had a terrible offense, and no deep passing game...only on pass protection breakdowns when Dylan was able to elude rushers and he threw up lobs did we complete deep balls. When you have a bottom 100 offense it makes no sense to look at individual areas because they were all bad...especially when you have one of the most talented Qbs in the nation.

Yeah we can definitely agree to disagree. I trust my eye test from what it looked like previously to last year and quite honestly it's pretty obvious to me. We are entitled to our own opinions of course.

Yep he corrected “some” mistakes. The word “Some” we can agree on.

Hey maybe we can reach a top 90 offense so we can brag about “more improvement”

And how can I argue with Rhule offensive genius, he hand picked Jeff Sims to be our QB

It’s fine to mention Sims so long as you also mention that he flipped the #1 QB and highest rated recruit ever at Nebraska.

That's fair. He deserves the shit he gets for Sims. He has to own it. But the same way we criticize that we have to give credit for the Raiola flip. I'm not sure what's so hard about that when we are fans. Everything has to be so one sided when generally it's usually in the middle.

I'm a Rhule guy and I give him props for all the changes he has made this off season. That said he has to wear the worse hire of the bunch to me in Satterfield. Horrible hire from day 1 imo and I said as much then. But you damn well have to give him credit for going and replacing him with Dana. Same could be said about WR coaches.

I'm hoping like hell he gets it all right but the first group of hires were kinda rocky minus about 4 coaches.

Yep

Dana did everything he could to scheme around our glaringly weak OL

Got the ball out AFAP, protected with 6+, went with much more heavy personnel.

Viola - “improvement”

Donnie has been here 3 full seasons, once again ZERO projected draft picks out of his room

Nobody ever gets better.

I think you will se a faster paced offense from Holgersen in 2025. Not so much from snap to snap and using less of the play clock but more quicker short yardage throws with 4 wide and quick hitting run plays out of 4 wide. Scheming a much more productive run game. Then taking the top off after the short and intermediate pass game and quick hitting run game brings the DBs closer to the LOS. It helps make the OL look a lot better.

Raiola needs to make quicker decisions and trust the play calling. It will help with Holgersen calling plays that are designed to get the ball out of his hands quickly.

Satterfield was a predictable play caller and things froze up against the better B1G teams. Holgerson has supreme confidence as a play caller and was able to squeeze enough out of the existing playbook to get to a bowl and win it. Now he gets to add more of his stuff and keep the stuff that is already working.

The only things that will be remembered from Rhule regime when it ends December 26' is that he hired his buddies, and when he didn't he hired the most important position coach for four years just get his nephew at QB. Team is dead in the water, the only question is whether he gets 1 more year or 2 more...thank gawd we live in a time that you can build a good team in one off-season. Next coach needs to be at least a good position coach, play caller, coordinator, or recruiter and not just "ceo".

Dont disagree with anything you said here.

I think Nebraska really got into a rut playing Benhardt, Corcoran, and our 6’10” injured reserve regular over the last few years that it really kept us “status quo”.

If there was any weakness in your statement about Raiolas lack of anyone getting drafted it’s because he’s had mostly the same starters for years. Cam Jurgens is one of the only starters that has been drafted recently. Lots of 6th year players in the group

I think they fell in love with their size and their status as starters and didn’t even consider other player might actually be better.

I really loved Tyler Knaaks film and felt he was the best OL in the Utah spring game prior to coming here. Yet he has never got a run despite shaky OT play at times.

I always felt he was a victim of our two tackles having years as starters and Raiola never considering someone else prior to Corcoran or Benhardts graduation.

If Raiola has a weakness I think it is lack of ability to re-evaluate the line execution. There have been a few times where we had an injury and the backup looked better frankly.

It’s because - after 3 full years - uncle Don can’t replace those 6th year frost guys

Yuck

Some of us think the back ups always look better . WRT Knaak, there have been several threads on spring game warriors. Also, Benhart has been one of the 5 best Olinemen for several years. The hope for Corcoran has always been to get him inside and that plan just has never worked out.

People clamor for backups when things aren’t going well. But honestly, I think if you went back and watched film when a starter got injured and a backup came in - there wasn’t much difference and in some cases, I think the backup played better.

Speaking to the O Line specifically.

I think Teddy P has been sub par his whole career. Just to injury ridden to be effective. Not his fault necessarily but is what it is. He would come back off major injury and would go right back to starting or major minutes and never looked great.

Looking forward to watching our two new OL transfers. Kind of forces us to break up the “same old same old”

With Ben Scott gone, it might force a guard to move to center. But with empty holes all over the place the “try someone new” can only lead to fresh eyes.

And honestly, Dana will have his eyes all over it. If he sees someone doing something he doesn’t like he will tell Raiola who try. That’s the beauty of Dana - he knows exactly what the puzzle pieces should look like to do what he wants to do on offense. And isn’t afraid to let the position coaches know.

We are BLESSED to have Dana H. He is literally like a head coach that controls and has say over everything on offense.
