Marcus Newby

If you're in a base defense, or even nickel where you need an outside linebacker in coverage, you are basically asking for calamity if you fail to use your OLB with the best coverage skills.
If you move him up to the LOS, as a DE, you're basically weakening two positions. Nebraska will utilize Alex Davis as a pass rusher with the #1's in clear cut 3rd and long Nickel and Dime situations.

A lot of people are really concerned about the pass rush, and I think its viable, but I also know Nebraska will present a very diverse and multiple schematic look this year on defense. I've even heard the potential of a 3-2-6 look vs. Spread teams. They will be doing a lot of things to help manufacture pressure on the QB.

3-4 BABY!

Not getting a ton of pub here, but I think he is going to start, no matter if MRI is healthy or not. It's good that we are going to be able to rotate, but I think Mr. Newby has elevated his game this fall.
Good call Leodis, says he is indeed starting per the depth chart thread.

Eh, not really that hard with deductive reasoning. He had a good spring, did the work during the summer, had a great fall camp, and couple that with MRI sitting on major scrimmages. With that said, I've loved this kid since he came to NU. Always shook my head during the Pelini times. It's like how is a big kid like this, that can run, not getting any PT? What's funny, and not to get off into a Pelini rant, but I remember when Pelini was doing a little bit of the same to Lavonte David at first. If you have playmakers, get them on the field. Sure they will make mistakes, but their playmaking will trump their mistakes, IMO.

Or go back to 2009 and you have a stud like Dillard riding pine for several games

Newby has rather quietly risen to being a high quality Backer. He has a knack for pass coverage and is a decent closer in run D. When he is healthy it'll be hard to keep him off of the field.

I always thought it was kind of the opposite. Brings the Thunder in the run game and improving his coverage ability.
