Barthel comes in for a lot abuse here and of course several board members like to be snide about Rhule, but as I’ve wondered through the comments, Holgerson is absent. I’m sure Dana would be pushing to get to the front of the line on this kid if he thought the RB room was shaky and this kid would be a substantial add. He apparently doesn’t.
Wait, what? We're outspending Ohio State by almost $5.5M? And we still have that big of a talent disparity? Yikes, if true.
Only conclusions to draw are...
- We've got way too many eggs in one, or a handful of small baskets. Meaning we're paying one or a handful of guys way too much with not enough left for other positions. Dylan?
- Our talent evaluation sucks. I thought that was supposed to be one of Rhule's big strengths. Finding diamonds in the rough and all that.
- We're having to overpay just to get players to NU. That might be a harsh reality until we're back to being relevant again, I guess.
I like EJ. He's a nice back. The problem is that Barthel and Rhule have spent the last 2 years trying not to play him. So, how much do they really love him? I'll believe Ives is the real deal when I see it. I think Booth had or is having surgery? So Parker is going to have to be ready and stay healthy.
That is my main interest in Brown. He's at least been through a full season of CFB, and played well enough to attract a list of suitors.
Definitely not a can't miss prospect, but a very intriguing prospect. He held up for an entire season through the playoffs, but is also a freshman. So, one could assume he has room for improvement. IMO we are 2 deep at rb, EJ and Parker. Neither has held up to an entire season of carries as the main rb in college. Brown would be a nice insurance policy. A nice, young, insurance policy.

For now Ives seems like he has taken a step up from last season and we don’t really know yet about Parker and Booth development.
I wouldn’t say our running back room is completely bare.
Seems like a lot of guys take a step up from last season in the off season every year.
It’s kind of how college football works with normal development. Players should get better until they reach their peak.
I’ll believe it when I see it re: Ives.
We need better if we’re going to gain 800 more yards on the ground this year like Tuco says (will also believe that when I see it).
I believe that Rhule has given Holgersen carte blanche with regards to the offense. He was able to eventually rid himself of McGuire as WR coach and bring in his own guy. If he wanted to bring in another RB he would have, especially after losing Ervin and Dowdell to the portal.
800 more rush yards this year?
Believe that when I see it, too. Even with our cakewalk schedule.
This will be a season where we learn if Dana has discipline required to commit to the run or if he can’t help himself & we throw throw throw (my expectation).
