CharMar Brown. RB

Because he is 20 months removed from being basically unrecruited by every power 4/5 team in the country. He sits out a year, then is one of 2 running backs, a team with a running QB, on the FCS national championship team. They played in 16 games and while his 244 carries and 1181 yards looks impressive, it is literally 15 carries for 73 yards per game and 4.8 ypc. Emmitt Johnson in the last 3 games of the regular season and the bowl game rushed for 314 yards on 59 carries 5.3 ypc. In the last 4 games, the FCS playoffs, Brown had 55 carries for 216 yards, 3.93 ypc and 1 TD.

I don't necessarily have anything against this player, I just don't believe he is the difference between 7-6 and 9-4. I definitely do not believe he is worth getting into a bidding war. And if he wasn't a local kid, no one on the forum would be concerned at all about this guy. Everyone on here, myself included, complains about not winning games yet when it comes down to picking up a transfer player or a HS recruit, it appears it is more important to overpay for a local player than to go all in on a national recruit.
Well said Taco.

Barthel comes in for a lot abuse here and of course several board members like to be snide about Rhule, but as I’ve wondered through the comments, Holgerson is absent. I’m sure Dana would be pushing to get to the front of the line on this kid if he thought the RB room was shaky and this kid would be a substantial add. He apparently doesn’t.

There indeed may be budget constraints.. we blew our wad it seems:

just to add, this I don't think includes NIL? I am not sure.. maybe the current regime is raping the program, I don't know what conclusions to draw from this.

Wait, what? We're outspending Ohio State by almost $5.5M? And we still have that big of a talent disparity? Yikes, if true.

Only conclusions to draw are...
  1. We've got way too many eggs in one, or a handful of small baskets. Meaning we're paying one or a handful of guys way too much with not enough left for other positions. Dylan?
  2. Our talent evaluation sucks. I thought that was supposed to be one of Rhule's big strengths. Finding diamonds in the rough and all that.
  3. We're having to overpay just to get players to NU. That might be a harsh reality until we're back to being relevant again, I guess.

If EJ wasn’t hired at Nebraska, Ives would be at Monmouth right now and no P 4/5 offers. And correct me if I’m wrong but Nelson would have taken a post grad year at a prep school with no P 4/5 offers. The staff might like those two but they are very unproven backs in their own right. And Brown now has more P 4/5 offers then those two

And for those that say they like Ives. Kid has 7 yards on 6 attempts. And that includes 4 yards on 3 rushes against UTEP the #102 rushing defense in the nation last year. It’s not crazy that Husker fans don’t have a lot of faith in him. All our other backs ran well in that game. Maybe he’s changed or maybe EJ is willing to die on the hill. Time will tell
I like EJ. He's a nice back. The problem is that Barthel and Rhule have spent the last 2 years trying not to play him. So, how much do they really love him? I'll believe Ives is the real deal when I see it. I think Booth had or is having surgery? So Parker is going to have to be ready and stay healthy.

That is my main interest in Brown. He's at least been through a full season of CFB, and played well enough to attract a list of suitors.

So you think Brown is a can't miss prospect?
Definitely not a can't miss prospect, but a very intriguing prospect. He held up for an entire season through the playoffs, but is also a freshman. So, one could assume he has room for improvement. IMO we are 2 deep at rb, EJ and Parker. Neither has held up to an entire season of carries as the main rb in college. Brown would be a nice insurance policy. A nice, young, insurance policy.

Would you pay more to get Brown than EJ is currently getting?

We need help at RB

Which national prospect should we be going all in on?

Cupboard is bare, so is the portal

For now Ives seems like he has taken a step up from last season and we don’t really know yet about Parker and Booth development.

I wouldn’t say our running back room is completely bare.

I’ll believe it when I see it re: Ives.

We need better if we’re going to gain 800 more yards on the ground this year like Tuco says (will also believe that when I see it).

I believe that Rhule has given Holgersen carte blanche with regards to the offense. He was able to eventually rid himself of McGuire as WR coach and bring in his own guy. If he wanted to bring in another RB he would have, especially after losing Ervin and Dowdell to the portal.

800 more rush yards this year?

Believe that when I see it, too. Even with our cakewalk schedule.

This will be a season where we learn if Dana has discipline required to commit to the run or if he can’t help himself & we throw throw throw (my expectation).

It’s kind of how college football works with normal development. Players should get better until they reach their peak.

Uh oh, Confirmed about 30 min ago, Brown is coming to watch a "physical practice" tomorrow in Lincoln, then getting on a plane to Berkeley for a weekend trip to Cal.

“Competition remains fierce for the Omaha native, but the #Huskers have ramped up the effort “

Keep California dreaming Boomer… Kid doesn’t need to see Nebraska that long . He’s seen it plenty. It’s a business trip. See how the widgets are made. Don’t need the dog and pony show here.

But some of the other message boards are saying he never visited Nebraska, because Frost blew him off, and this is his first time meeting Rhule.

Talked to a cousin that lives in Moorhead and they’re very disappointed that he leaving the Bison. Said if we land him, he isn’t coming here not to start, I told him he will have his work cut out for him beating out Emmitt.

This would be a great get if Rhule can land him.

That’s why I feel he ends up at Cal. It’s the only school that doesn’t have anyone in place.

Honestly, I wasn't that impressed with him the few times I watched him. I didn't think he had very good speed and lacked vision. I'm sure Rhule feels pressure to recruit the kid. IF we get him, he'll provide a change of pace and depth. I have no idea what kind of pass catcher he is out of the backfield.

Yep the few times I watched NDSU it was pretty obvious the QB even in running was the main focus of the D . He benefited greatly from that. Don’t get me wrong the kid was the top freshman in FSC and Miami offered. But I agree he would be good depth .

Well guys do usually get better as they get older in the system that they are playing in.

Then why mention it as some kind of selling point? Isn't that just overstating the obvious if that's the case? In fact, if that's just how college football works, wouldn't that be the case with just about every single player on every team? Including the defenders he's running against? And other RBs he's being compared with? Wouldn't that just make it all a moot point? Or, perhaps you're just missing the point altogether?

So... That's just a picture of him "watching practice". Right?
How things ended up on Thursday and where things were even as late as Wednesday morning were very different. Nebraska decided to show more interest, but only because Brown kind of pushed the issue. Nebraska's financial package is not going to be the most lucrative.

IF Brown decides to go to Lincoln, he will be betting on himself and future NIL earnings, especially local NIL stuff that he wouldn't get in Miami, Manhattan or Berkeley.

I am telling you though that Nebraska did not really have a lot of interest in Brown until later on Wednesday. Perhaps it was the lure of playing close to family and not chasing the bag and his persistence in making the trip to Lincoln to watch practice that swayed their change of direction.

But I stand by what I was told initially about Nebraska's interest and them not really having a visit set up for him, like they have for other transfer recruits, especially early in the week when I posted what I did. about it not being set in stone and it being only to watch practice.

For the record, there are other sites that had similar information that put their stories up late yesterday.
