Are we really "scrambling" for recruits now?

There has been a lot of talk on here today about how our coaches tried really hard to land some of the guys today but failed. And I agree that our coaches tried their best to get these guys to Lincoln, really wanted them, and pulled out all the stops.

However, there is also now a lot of talk on here about how we will now be "scrambling" for recruits just like Pelini was at the end of most recruiting cycles. The inference is that Riley is no better at recruiting than Pelini was.

I reject this thinking. For starters, most of the hype with regard to the guys who we wanted today was generated by boards like this. All kinds of posts about crystal balls, and top 15 classes, and this guy or that guy as "must get" recruits, with post after post after post breathlessly following every tweet and message.... So there was an air of expectation that we really were going to get some of these guys, but it was an air of expectation built on hype from these very boards. One wonders to what extent our coaches were also hyperventilating over this? I doubt they were at all. My guess is they knew all along that these guys were a reach, a stretch and so on, but thought "what the hell, let's go get em if we can". But nowhere along the way did our coaches most likely think that we were going to get most or any of these guys. So while some on here are panicking, my guess is the coaches are not. In other words... they were not caught by surprise.

Second... this is not similar to Pelini. Pelini's recruiting was a train wreck from top to bottom. Poorly organized and focused without an eye to roster management. This coaching staff is far more organized and is well aware of what needs to get done. They are not in full panic mode right now nor are they going to "scramble" for recruits. My firm conviction is they have a plan in place and are going to follow it right up until signing day. No scrambling, just a calm determination to go after the best guys they can find. They, unlike members of this board, never bought into the hype machine and are therefore most likely not back in their rooms crying and sucking their thumbs.

Third, there is still a lot of time left to recruit. All we need are about 7 more guys for a decent class. You don't think our coaches can identify 7 football players somewhere in this country who can be real gamers and ballers for this team? I think they can and will.

Honestly, we had ONE recruit we thought we would get today commit to another school. The whole sky is falling, scrambling to put together a class narrative is silly at this point.
Could not agree more. I am sure our coaches were disappointed by Calvin's decision. But hey, he isn't the greatest receiver in the history of the universe and the coaches know it. They will find others....

We'll find out now how class B is going to be successful for them...

Regardless how this class pans out this staff has to coach them up to the potential of winning the B1G West... After all that is what Iowa staff does from time to time.

Yep. Coaching is going to be critical. As it always is

Definitely agree with the OP points, though there are concessions that are made, i.e. slow playing one recruit for another etc., that occurs in these circumstances and only the coaches know if they may have missed out on one recruit or another for that reason. That said, with the way this staff approaches recruiting, I feel confident that the wins and losses in this recruiting cycle will help to shape how the staff moves forward in the future.

Play the hype machine and be bitterly disappointed. A couple of board residents have spun this into an existential crisis. The straight up reality is that we had one kid we thought was a strong lean and one kid who was a maybe. Both decided to stay on the left coast. Disappointing, yes. Cause for concern, not even. The coaches will continue to work their prospects and get kids in who they think can help the program. We have a good group of commits already.

It "appears" to be similar to the past regime when we approach the end of the cycle - not all spots filled with great talent and others left open. This is year two for these coaches and even at that there have been changes in the staff. I am not one to get my panties in a wad over something I cannot control. By all appearances, the AD has provided ample resources to recruit and there is an organized effort by the staff. Are all staff pulling their recruiting weight - I don't know how to answer that. I am not a "sky is falling" guy as I have worked with teens for many years, so they are hard to predict but easy to predict at the same time. They all want to win.

It should be obvious that many of these highly rated kids are not afraid to go to a school that already has plenty of talent - see Alabama and tOSU and others. These kids want to play for winning programs and winning coaches. Texas kids going to tOSU for the scenery? I

My thought, and it was the same one I used when hiring HS coaches, was to give them all the support they need to succeed (there are limits) and see how they develop their system and kids. I think it is the same with Riley on a much bigger scale obviously. He has to show he can develop the talent he has and continue to attract better talent. If the results are not there in a few years then you know his system was not built to work. The system gets better and better and eventually you hope to reach that point where you are reloading every year with great talent to plug into those spots left open. We have a long, long ways to go to get to that point.

What I don't buy into is all of the over the top bashing that goes on. The kids, the coaches, must have top 15 class with no excuses, we are Nebraska, the kid we got is not even a plan B, if we are going to compete we have to start being crooked, kids are trash if they decommit, etc. etc, etc. It is life in football and Nebraska has lost the luster it once had - that is a glaring issue that will take time to remedy. Even if we got a top 15 class, we likely would not see the impact immediately, it will take years. I am old and patient - when I see the effort on both the administration and coaches slack off and the effort of players is not there, then you know there is a systemic issue.

OK, pennsy, how do you have time to type all of these posts? :)

You'd think Sarell would have informed Cav quite a long time ago based on their history and out of respect. Foster seems like a great kid and I doubt he'd string Cav along in this process if he knew in his heart where he was going. The offer to the Lincoln kid seems weird this late in the game though. Who knows what was going on with the other kids? If we have to finish with low 3* guys, I hope they at least have some serious speed and athleticism and can be coached up within a few years. We can't afford more scholarship benchwarmers on this roster.

I agree with most of what you say, especially the stuff in bold. Thanks for taking the time to write a long and well thought our reply to my post.

My posting ebbs and flows. And it depends on how busy I am here on the sheep farm. Right now is a slow time for me. I am also even slower than usual because I am recovering from a double whammy surgery: I had a fissure repaired in my ass (ha, yes, my ass had a fissure caused by lifting too many heavy objects) and I had double hernia surgery (hernia caused by same heavy objects). We were removing not one one, not two, but three old cast iron coal stoves from the back of our barn to sell for scrap. I don't have to tell you how heavy cast iron coal stoves are. I did it with two other guys, both of whom were in their 20's. I forgot I was 58. Hence... anal fissure and double hernia. lol. TMI?? perhaps.

So yes, I have lots of time on my hands right now. Too much. I am driving my wife nuts. And I am sure most people on this board want me to just shut the f$ck up.

Exactly. And my guess is they knew about the others as well with the exception of Calvin. He may have told them yesterday, but the coaches were probably counting on his commitment. I am still wondering about Keith Williams... I wonder if his DUI has not put a damper on his effectiveness as a recruiter.

Maybe some want you to shut up, but I would say most appreciate your posts.

All opinion. No facts!! Another bullshit post.

Not the worst thing in the world, but not where the program needs to be. If they want titles, multiple guys need to be N at the USAA game. Must have top-10 classes, period.

This class will not be top-10, and unless there is something wild about to happen between now and signing day, it won't be top-20 either. That's not good enough.

There is only one offer recently sent out to someone who wasn't on our radar a month ago. And he's a Rivals 250 guy that recently opened up his recruiting. I believe he's an Oregon lean but I'm not sure where he sits on their [UO] preferences.

The Lincoln kid is a definite backup plan, which I have no issues with for an OT spot.

Other than that, there's still a lot of opportunities out there and I'm glad none of the gloom and doomers showing up today aren't involved in our staff's efforts. It's beyond ridiculous to me of the stuff people have posted.

I hope Riley and crew knock it out of the park in the last 3 1/2 weeks. EVERY single Husker fan should want the same.

The important thing is this staff is willing to dance with these kids. Previous staff was not.

Sucks we did not receive a verbal today but every single person (recruit) watching today saw a Nebraska hat on the table more than LSU, Alabama, Michigan, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, etc...

We are building something here but so is every other program in the country. we can't and shouldn't expect rainbows and lollipops at every turn. I'm optimistic that MR and co. Will find great players to join this class and continue to build on what we achieved this year.

It's one day, albeit a day with "no's". It certainly changes my perspective or outlook on our chances of closing on bigger names to finish out this cycle. There is still time left before signing day though.

Awhile back I started a thread on the 500 mile radius. At that time, we had 1 out of 20 of the 4* players committed to NU. Seems like we might have better chances closer to home if we invested more resources closer to home. There were 128 3* players, and we had offered 13 of them at that time. And "no", I'm not suggesting that we just fill up early on lower rated radius guys.

Something has to change though. Maybe if or when the early signing period is voted in, it will change our recruiting.

I think we still have a chance to finish with a very solid class

Most important post of the day. The last few days people were clinging to hope, student directories, and maybe bit of intervention by Husker Jesus at the last hour to get us 3/4 commits (not too many people really seemed to talk themselves into Filiaga), but we really only lost one guy.

And we still have time to go after him, given how visibly shaken he was, I think there's still quite a bit of hope.

just say you got rekt.. that's the new lingo, so you will sound more cool than using fissure and etc.

My ass is doing much better. I will be back lifting 500 pound cast iron stoves again very soon..... Not.
I want a cast iron stove to put in my basement, but I don't know where I would run the exhaust pipe. Can't share a wood-burning stove chimney with furnace or water heater, can you?

I would not recommend that at all. There would be too much build up of soot I think in a normal exhaust system for the furnace and water heater. There is no way to run a standard chimney pipe for a wood/coal stove out of your basement through a window perhaps? I also have a neighbor who actually excavated part of his basement wall just to get enough clearance to run a chimney pipe out and up

I agree. He knew he was not going to Nebraska. Should have let Cav know weeks ago.
