Arik Gilbert’ potential

From a talent and physical standpoint, is Arik Gilbert the closest player Nebraska has brought in that resembles Johnny Mitchell ? To me Mitchell was the best tight end I’ve ever seen play at Nebraska and Gilbert seems to be a clone of Mitchell. If I can remember correctly, Mitchell had some type of issue that didn’t allow him to play his freshman year so his career wasn’t always smooth. Maybe Gilbert can follow the same path as Mitchell, we can only hope and it will be interesting to follow.

Recruiting Rhule checking in on STL 2024 five-star[UPDATE: 3:54 pm]

Matt Rhule is in St Louis today and will stop by University High School. That’s the home of 2024 five-star wide receiver Ryan Wingo. Nebraska likes him a lot just like every other program in the country.

Exchanged a couple texts with head coach Adam Cruz at University. Rhule and linebackers coach Rob Dvoracek were at the school and made a good impression.

“They were awesome I think they will do a great job in the area.”

We’ll see how it pans out but an effort is being made.

Football still making boatloads

LINCOLN — In case you’re ever curious why so much print and digital ink is spilled over Nebraska football, you can consider the history of the program — the national titles won, the trophies amassed — or you can chew on a dollar figure.
Last fiscal year, Husker football made $97,900,681. That’s according to the annual report NU sends to the NCAA in December. Reporters get the data in mid-January. Nebraska athletics had a terrific financial year between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022, making more than $143 million in overall revenue and netting a $12,241,993 surplus compared to expenses.
Husker football itself made more than $62 million in surplus. The World-Herald will have more in-depth coverage soon on how money and college sports are more intertwined than ever, but the basic figures tell you what we’ve long known.

The pigskin is a cash cow.

Baseball What We Learned: Nebraska baseball opens 2023 with its first practice

Pretty chill day out a Dan Hartog where Nebraska hosted its first practice of 2023. A lot of optimism coming from the Huskers. Hit the link for more.

Baseball Nebraska lands 2026 top-200 prospect Brody Jindra

The Huskers received more good news Friday night when they got the commitment of the Millard South product. Jindra joins Beau Peterson of Kansas and Bryce Fountain of Norris as the third member of Nebraska’s 2026 recruiting class.

Huskers coming out with another big commitment from last weekend’s prospect camp.

Football Sources: Matt Rhule has found his Chief of Staff

Sources have indicated to Inside Nebraska that Dr. Susan Elza will be named the next Chief of Staff at Nebraska under Matt Rhule. Elza has been the University Interscholastic League Director of Athletics in Texas since being hired for the position in 2015. The University Interscholastic League is the Texas version of the NSAA as Elza oversees the UIL athletic department and administers athletic activities for member schools.

Elza had previously served as the Executive Director of Athletics at Northwest Independent School District in Fort Worth, Texas. She’s also served as Assistant Athletic Director of Allen Independent School District as well as the head softball coach for both Garland and Allen. Elza received her Doctorate of Educational Leadership from Lamar University.

If hired, this is a power move for Rhule, who continues to use his connections in Texas to land a powerful figure in Texas high school sports. With his emphasis on bringing Lone Star State talent to Nebraska, Dr. Elza’s hire would be indicative of how much Rhule and his staff plan to attack the state.

Basketball Three Things to Watch: Nebraska faces Maryland in swing game for Huskers

Nebraska is in dangerous territory right now of experiencing a swoon similar to the first three seasons of the Fred Hoiberg Era.

The Huskers can stop the bleeding on Saturday against a Maryland team that has been inconsistent throughout the season and has gone W, L, W, L, W over its last five games.

I labeled this a "swing game" for the Huskers. It's not a swing game in the traditional sense of the phrase. It's not as if a win over the Terps has the potential to completely turn their season around. But a win would get things back on a good track and could definitely go a long way in helping them avoid a collapse over the final-third of the season.

Scholarship Distribution & use of NIL funds

I saw this and thought it was a very interesting proposal. Could we establish NIL scholarship funds and revamp our walk-on program for recruits/players who should absolutely be on scholly? This could help establish incredible depth across all position groups. Sure, it would almost certainly create increased attrition, but who cares if you can start over-signing every class by 10 or 20?
