WAY OT: Who lives in or near the Shreveport/Bossier City area?

I need some Hotel advice.

I am coming to the area in February just for a night. Reading the Hotel reviews online it makes it seem there is not many that are good. Of course, the weekend the rates are also jacked way up.

I want to stay out of questionable areas of course. We will be going to Margaritaville for a concert. They want $325 a night. I am not cheap but that is ridiculous looking at the rooms.

Any dinner recommendations? Better spots to gamble a little?

Any help is appreciated.

Next Shoe to Drop - Academics

Here in the south, there's a lot of talk now of not requiring college athletes to be actual students, but rather the Universities would create degree programs in the sports that the athletes play, essentially allowing college athletes to get a degree in football, basketball, baseball, etc. The curriculum would be set by the athletic department, essentially exempting the players from any of the other academic requirements of the University. The thing that they're battling with is whether this curriculum would be mandatory to play sports or whether athletes could opt to be regular students, which would place them at a serious competitive disadvantage. It just keeps getting worse, and if you don't believe it's possible, let me ask whether 10 years ago you could have imagined legitimately paying a QB 1-2 million dollars to play at your school.

D1 FBS Football Coach of the Year!

My last post before the game…..rooting for Huskers in this one, then the Badgers to destroy Minnesota next week to become bowl eligible.

Any way………

Coach of the Year!!! Who you got? I may have missed on a few but here is my list, not in any order, and with a little commentary.....

Jeff Brohm -- Louisville (Louisville alum. Rockin' it!)
Jedd Fisch -- Arizona (this dude played tennis in high school)
Willie Fritz --Tulane (keeping Tulane on the radar)
Mike Norvell-- Florida State (improved every year. In the hunt)
David Braun -- Northwestern (Damn, this guy has something going on)
Steve Sarkasian -- Texas (Improvement sans the melt down vs Kansas)
Kirk Frerenz-- Iowa -- (What can you say? The dude is 8-2.)
Dan Lanning -- Oregon (Explosive team. Sorry Deion)
Jamie Chadwell -- Liberty University (Should have gone higher profile)
Nick Saban -- Alabama (Same old. Just recruits and wins)
Kirby Smart -- Georgia (Elite program. Recruiting coast to coast now)
Chuck Martin -- Miami of Ohio (Where did he come from? Wow!
Jason Candle -- Toledo Solid resume. Great Mac Team!)
Lane Kiffin -- Mississippi 9-2 at Ol' Miss? Impressive)
Eliah Drinkwitz -- Missouri (Total solid upward rebuild. Tough team!)
Ryan Day -- Ohio State (What can you say about Day? In it!)
Kalen DeBoer -- Washington (Offensive canons! Solid D!)
James Madison -- Curt Cigetti (Give this guy a bowl game for Pete's sake!!!!)
Jim Harbaugh -- Michigan (If he doesn't win it this year....he will be in contention next year)

College Football…

What a mess. How would you even start to fix it? As Nick the Dick from Alabama said…”It’s free agency without a salary cap”. As difficult as the problem is, even if you could come up with an equitable solution, how would you police it?

Then when have a new 12 team playoff starting, and you give the top 4 teams, who likely have won at recruiting and filling in the gaps with NIL, a bye for the first round. What a brilliant idea!

College football is a great game…the guys in suits running the show are probably going to screw it up for good.

Another thing that the transfer portal and laundering booster money to players has done...

It's made the RIVALS, Scout, and any other service's team recruiting ratings obsolete. Now that teams are bringing in players for the netherworld, you can't even rate classes. Another thing, if you get a star older QB to come to your school (probably for a hefty price), that's worth 5 to 7 four star freshman coming in at other positions.

OT: Prayers for my friend Dillon

I don't even know where to begin with this. Dillon and I served together on the tech team at my former church for a number of years and you'll be very hard pressed to find a more compassionate and kind dude anywhere. He's in his 30s and he and his wife had just had their 4th child a couple months ago (at 30 weeks...so as of this post, the baby is still in the NICU but they're hoping she's released this week). He's a veteran and just the kind of guy that wouldn't hesitate to give you the shirt off his back.

About 2 or 3 weeks ago Dillon was in bed trying to fall asleep and started having seizures. They rushed him to the hospital and got the seizures under control but discovered a giant tumor in his frontal lobe. The doctors believe it's inoperable because of where it's located and what's surrounding it. They had it biopsied and unfortunately it's cancerous and aggressive (astrocytoma grade 3).

Up until now I've heard varying reports about a prognosis, but they've all be years and not decades. I know they've started a treatment plan and they're going to try to maximize as much as they can.

Mid 30s, 4 kids under the age of 9 including a brand new baby. As a father of 6 myself I am devastated for them.

On top of that, he is the primary income (truck driver) which he won't be able to do because of the seizure risk. I know he's looking for other things because he desperately doesn't want to leave his wife with a stack of bills and broke and of course who knows how hard his treatment will be.

They are staying positive and thanking God for the time they have together and trying to cherish every moment. I am praying for a miracle, I am praying for healing and for his wife and kids to have peace.

If you can join me, it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Here is a link to their story/go fund me if anyone's interested.

What you do on the field has never mattered so little

Sportsperson of the Year: Deion Sanders

CFP not taking Florida State

Never has on the field performance meant so little. It's all about the buzz, creating content, compelling matchups. Sanders went 4-8 and his team is in shambles, losing a starting OT, C and LB to the portal, losing 3 assistants. Yet he is the Sportsperson of the year, not because of the team he's built or the games he's won, but because he dominates social media, as Dan Lanning said he get clicks. Oregon beat them on the filed, but it doesn't matter, Sanders got the reward.

Florida State won every game, won their conference overcame a injury to their star QB to get it done. But it doesn't matter. Alabama will get more viewers, will provide a more compelling game. Society is headed the wrong way when what you do off the field is rewarded more than what you do on the field.
