Look at this guy already laying the ground work for his arrival:
Cliff notes:
- Nebraska has history, fan support and resources to bounce back
- It will take the right coach who can recruit nationally and get kids to leave their homes due to its location
- Time is running out, so Nebraska needs to go with a proven winner this time around who is going to get it back on track ASAP
- He loved the times he was in Nebraska and loved to be amongst the fans
- He was a fan of TO and what the Huskers use to be in his youth
- Nebraska is a job that is as good as it gets
He is pretty much saying he is the right guy for the job and would love to coach at Nebraska.
Long story below:
“Well, Dave (Revsine), you're right — especially for the older people that grew up in the
Tom Osborne era, where they were the Alabama college football,” Meyer said. “And they had great players, high draft picks, couldn't stop the black shirts on defense. You know, the corridor between the Southwest Conference, Big Eight, the Big 12 that corridor of football between Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Nebraska, in my early adult life, that was the best football in the country. National champions, Heisman Trophy winners and you just see some of this happening right now. First of all, the breakup of Oklahoma, Texas leaving, Arkansas not in that conference any more and then a school like Nebraska that’s having its recent struggles.
“So you know that they had an identity in Texas recruiting and California recruiting and when they made the move the Big Ten, you're now playing teams, obviously in the Midwest and East Coast and the families in Texas and families in California, you really don't have that much interest because you don't get to see your kids play. I know they've had success in New Jersey before but, you know the recruiting footprint of Nebraska really has to be identified and evaluated.”
“Nebraska is one the most unique fan bases I've ever experienced,” Meyer said. “One year when I was a coach at Ohio State, I asked one of my guys that worked with me, I said take me around a little bit. Let's go incognito a little bit. I just wanted to walk around and I kind of did you know? I put a hat on and just kind of was in disguise and I just wanted to watch this because I grew up watching
Tom Osborne and watching Nebraska win national championships. I was a big fan and so the fan support is as good as there is in America. They're great fans too.
“And then the game starts and they're still there. They're there all the way to the end. They're as courteous fans as you can imagine. So I would imagine that this is just one of things, it’s a speed bump. They got to get going, but you just wonder to at what point will it ever start to dissipate a little bit? I can't see it because the ones who grew up watching Nebraska and I've witnessed it first hand several times on that field, those are as good fans as there are in America.”
