Assistant Coaches/Recruits

TIPS FOR THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. Not for everyone but certainly for a lot of you.

1. Head coaches want people they can trust. Head coaches typically hire people they have worked with because they TRUST them. So shut up with the “hiring friends” comments. So ignorant.

2. Coaches. Recruits. It all makes for great conversations but the only thing that matters is the product on the field. We’ve had great recruits. We’ve had some great coaches. And we still sucked. Why don’t we let Matt pick his crew and see what the product on the field looks like before we get bent out of shape over who he gets to come here.

3. Mickey does not have to stay. In fact, staying might not be what’s best for him or NU. Would love it if they make it work but MJ staying is not the end all be all that everyone is making it out to be. He would be super expensive and wouldn’t be a coordinator. Doesn’t make a ton of sense. Plus I would assume he wants a head gig and now would be the best time for him to explore that.

4. For those that don’t like the hire, again, winning cures all. This dude could have coached anywhere three years ago. ANYWHERE. I’d say that is a win. Let him do his thing his way. Reporters need to shut up about black shirts and walk ons. Old NU is DEAD. Embrace it and move on.

5. The hire. I give it an A. Saban, Urban, Dabbo, and Lincoln are the A+ can’t misses. Everyone else has risks. His Carolina record means nothing. He didn’t have a QB. Take a look at all the great coaches w and wo thier franchise QB. It usually equates to a 20-30% drop in winning %. And his college record isn’t great because he took on an absolute dumpster fire and made them GOOD. And then moved to another dumpster fire. And made them good. His college record should not be used against him. It actually validates how good he is.

Happy Monday everyone.

Anthony Grant...

Curious to see what happens with Grant. During the first part of the season, he was an absolute monster despite some horrifically bad o-line play. As the season went on, the one thing I noticed was that he didn't have that burst of speed so that even when there was decent blocking or if he had made his first defender miss, he just couldn't get any kind of separation. Could have been injury or the dude was simply gassed after having to do so much heavy lifting during the first 2 months of the season - either way, what he put on tape for the entire year - not sure that gets him drafted. So if he is looking for one final year, does it happen at Nebraska or does he go somewhere that might be better situated for him to have a huge senior season...

Corey Campbell immediate benefit

One major positive of assistant strength and conditioning coach Corey Campbell being announced now is to get the S&C program going immediately here.

Of course we assume Jeremy Scott will be the main strength and conditioning coach but he can’t leave Carolina until their season is over.

This is not the first time this situation has happened with Campbell/Scott. He took over for Scott as Baylor's head strength coach after Scott left and prior to Campbell’s stint with Carolina (as Zack mentioned).

I just can’t wait until we see a new influence with the S&C program here.
