Recruiting Elkhorn South star Cole Ballard commits to Huskers as PWO

Class of 2023 RB/S Cole Ballard has committed to the Huskers as a preferred walk-on. Ballard is a teammate of 2023 Huskers commit Maverick Noonan at Elkhorn South.

Ballard's regular season stats in 9 games: 118 carries for 1,134 yards rushing (9.6 yards per carry), 14 receptions for 275 yards with 33 total TDs. He finished with a total of 1,625 all-purpose yards and 38 total TDs in 11 games that includes Elkhorn South's two playoff games. He also added 16 tackles and one interception on defense during the regular season.

Matt Rhule, a former walk-on himself as a Penn State linebacker, has a long-held and well-known respect for walk-ons and plans to evaluate them seriously at Nebraska.

"We will leave no stone unturned to find good players," Rhule said at his introductory press conference. "We will take the walk-on program seriously, we will take transfers seriously, we will take NIL seriously. ... We will look at everything."

It will be interesting to see if the in-state star Ballard winds up carving out a role down the road.

Below are Ballard's Rivals profile card and his senior season highlight reel.

Should conference winners be guaranteed a spot in an expanded CFP?

Say for instance Purdue beats Michigan, or sending Utah and KSU in an expanded playoff?

I wonder how this idea would play out if all P5 conference winners went to the CFP? Would the remaining spots be filled out subjectively like giving a spot to a conference runner up who’s a media darling? Or giving a Cincinnati or UCF a spot?

I guess my idea would try to eliminate subjective popularity polls that are even more obsolete given the CFP. It would be more like the NFL, which given NIL and the transfer portal it already kinda is.

Glen Schumann visits two top recruits after SEC Championship game

Georgia won the SEC Championship on Saturday. A day later, co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann went to see five-star linebacker Qua Russaw and five-star defensive lineman James Smith, teammates at Montgomery (Ala.) Carver.

Russaw has visited Athens five times, while Smith has seen the Bulldogs four times. Both took an official visit to Georgia on June 17.

Unfortunately this doesn't sound great for the chances of Schumann coming onto the Nebraska staff.

Football UConn RB Nathan Carter enters transfer portal

UConn RB Nathan Carter is in the transfer portal. Carter rushed for 405 yards on 65 carries (6.2 yards per attempt) and one TD in 4 games this year prior to a season-ending shoulder injury. The sophomore has racked up 983 yards on 190 carries (5.2 per attempt) and 3 TDs in 17 career games.

Carter was huge for the Huskies when he was available this season and was one of the top RBs in the country stats-wise before going down early against Michigan. Carter ranked third in the country in rushing yards (384) and was second among all running backs with at least 50 carries in yards per carry (6.5) before suffering a separated shoulder after six carries against the Wolverines.

There are going to be several guys to monitor under the Huskers' new coaching staff. Carter is one of them as I could see him following former UConn RBs coach E.J. Barthel to Nebraska.

Scholarship Count

Three more Nebraska guys hit the portal today. That brings the total number of scholarships to 67. I am aware of at least 2 or 3 more that will be in the portal by the weekend. So, it wouldn't surprise me to see the roster in the mid 50s after spring.

IMO this is a great opportunity to start fresh. But how much is too much? If Nebraska has 55 guys that means there are 30 scholarships available - that's a tall task for any coach. Thoughts?

Reactions: headcard

"Only Nebraska VB turns a profit"

"...college volleyball programs generally lose a lot of money, not only at the U (of Minnesota) but across the NCAA.

...Only Nebraska’s program turns a profit, mainly from ticket sales; the Huskers have sold out 303 consecutive matches in Lincoln since 2001."

Football Nebraska OL Alex Conn enters transfer portal

Huskers redshirt freshman OL Alex Conn has entered the transfer portal. Conn was in his third season at Nebraska. He is transfer portal entrant No. 9 thus far for Nebraska.
