OT - Other Family Things To Do Near Valentine/Niobrara Area

The wife and I are taking the kids down the Niobrara when we visit Nebraska in late July.

3 nights and two full-days.

Day 1 will be tubing, but we’d like to do something else with the second day in the area.

Would love any tips or suggestions given I’ve only gone down the river out there, and we just think 2 full-days of tubing will be too much for the kids (and us)…..but we already booked lodging in Valentine so we’ve got that second day to fill up.

TIA WN experts!

PS - I did already search the board for previous threads but didn’t find anything super relevant (as much as I’d love to go golfing haha).

OT - Best Diet Plan

Inflation

I've lost 15 lbs since I stopped eating fast food about 2 months ago. I stopped when I went through the drive through line at one of the big chains and ordered a burger/fries/drink "value" meal and they wanted over $13 for it. Literally, this same meal cost $8 just two years ago.

I'm sorry, but even after acknowledging that inflation in fast food has been higher than the national average because of crazy wage increases, we haven' had 63% inflation over the past 24 months. These joints are using the inflation gig to rape consumers, and as such, people like me are choosing not to participate, hence, we have a bunch of vacant fast food venues in the area.

This was predicted when they raised wages to $15/hr. Less business and less jobs, but although a bunch of fast food workers are out of a job, at least I'm 15 lbs lighter.

Basketball Nebrasketball will play Oregon State in Sioux Falls next season

Nebraska will play Oregon State inside the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, the program announced today. They'll play Nov. 18 — the same day as Nebraska's football game at Wisconsin.

Here's the press release:

The Nebraska men's basketball team is returning to the Sanford Pentagon in 2023 for a non-conference matchup against Oregon State on Saturday, Nov. 18. Ticket information and game time will be announced later.

This will be the second time Nebraska has played at the Sanford Pentagon. On Dec. 16, 2018, the Huskers defeated Oklahoma State 79-56 in front of a standing room-only crowd of 3,800.

"Playing at the Sanford Pentagon against Oregon State is a great opportunity for our basketball team," Nebraska Head Coach Fred Hoiberg said. "We are thankful to Sanford Sports for including the University of Nebraska in this game for a second time. We have a lot of alumni in the Sioux Falls area, so I expect there to be a lot of red and white in the crowd in November which will help make for a phenomenal atmosphere for a college basketball game."

Nebraska returns four players who started at least 12 games during the 2022-23 season. The Huskers finished on a high note last season, winning six of their final eight regular-season games, including three victories over teams that played in the NCAA Tournament.

Oregon State will play at the Sanford Pentagon for the first time. The Beavers finished the 2022-23 season with an 11-21 record. Head Coach Wayne Tinkle, entering his 10th season at Oregon State, coached one of the youngest teams in the nation last season as more than 50 percent of the team's points came from freshmen – one of three Power 5 teams to do so.

This will be the 11th all-time meeting between the Huskers and Beavers, as Oregon State leads the all-time series, 6-4. Nebraska won the last meeting between the teams 50-44 on Dec. 12, 2009 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Since opening in 2013, the Sanford Pentagon has hosted more than 80 Division I men's and women's college basketball games. Last December, the Pentagon hosted a rematch of the 2021 men's national championship game between No. 6 Baylor and No. 14 Gonzaga. Two weeks later, defending women's national champions and No. 1 ranked South Carolina defeated South Dakota State on Heritage Court.

Baseball Live Thread Game 43 FINAL: No. 23 Maryland 8, Nebraska 4

Today starts a big weekend for the Nebraska baseball team as the Huskers (24-17-1, 9-6) hope to bounce back from a Wednesday loss to North Dakota State at Haymarket Park. It'll be a tough task as Nebraska flies east to take on the No. 23 Maryland Terrapins (31-15, 11-4) for a three-game series in College Park. The Terrapins possess one of the best offenses in the country as they are second in the nation with over 100 home runs and lead the Big Ten in numerous offensive categories. However, Maryland is ranked 13th in team ERA, so there could be plenty of offensive outbursts this weekend.

This begins the final three-week stretch of the season for the Big Red who are currently in a three-way tie for third with Indiana and Michigan in the conference. The Terrapins enter the weekend leading the conference with Michigan State right behind with a 9-5 league mark. Nebraska really can't afford to be swept this weekend as that'll put them against the wall in terms of qualifying for the Big Ten Tournament at the end of the month in Omaha. Winning at least one game needs to happen.

Tonight on the bump we have LHP Emmett Olson (5-2, 4.06 ERA) vs. RHP Nick Dean (3-1, 4.70 ERA). Here is the full series preview to get you ready.

OT: All right…enough of the DR shit…let’s talk important stuff….your favorite tequila.

Long story long… was down in Puerto, Escondido Mexico (about 200 miles north of the Guatemala border), attempting to bail my black-sheep of a brother out of a Mexican jail.

After a long day, was patronized a small bodega close to my hotel. Was looking for some tequila to ease my stress…an old Mexican local saw me perusing the tequila selection, approached me, and proceeded to inform me in broken english (unsolicited might I add), that Patron was trash, and this was the local, high-end, “go to” tequila… half the price & far superior…

He was not wrong.…

Baseball Nebraska adds Barton CC transfer Riley Silva

Appreciate @Jaihawk putting something up early, but Nebraska received its fourth commitment in the last month during a 8-4 loss to Maryland Friday night in the form of Barton CC (Kan.) center fielder Riley Silva. The sophomore outfielder will join the Huskers for the 2023-2024 season and try to earn himself some playing time in the outfield with his lethal speed.

Silva has been an instrumental part of a Barton team that is 45-8 and locked up back-to-back Jayhawk West Conference titles with 24-6 league mark. The 5-foot-11 OF is the second Canadian to join the 2023 recruiting class along with fellow Canadian Aaron Manias who committed on Thursday.

Silva is batting .398 through 48 games this season with no home runs, but 34 RBI, 64 runs and 41 stolen bases. He's really improved since his freshman season at Barton where he played in only 11 games with 12 at-bats where he hit .250 with three hits, triple and two RBI.
